Chapter 9: The Daughter of Two Secrets

For five seconds, nobody spoke.

The birth certificate lay on the marble floor between them.

A single piece of paper.

A lifetime of lies.

Adrian stared at the name printed beneath “Father.””

Richard Vale.

The man who had spent the last hour pretending he was protecting a family.

The man who had built his entire life on reputation.

The man who had just looked at his own granddaughter like she was a problem to solve.

“No,” Vivian whispered.

She stepped forward.

“No.””

Richard looked at her.

His expression was not guilt.

It was anger.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.””

The words were almost more horrifying than the document itself.

Adrian picked up the paper.

“You knew.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.””

“That’s what everyone keeps saying.””

Adrian’s voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You lied about Eleanor. You lied about Lily. You lied about everything.””

Richard looked at him.

“You think you’re different?””

The room went silent.

“You think because you love her, you’re the hero?””

Adrian frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard laughed quietly.

“You never asked why Eleanor chose you.””

The words hit harder than Adrian expected.

He looked toward the security screen.

The empty feed where Eleanor had appeared moments earlier.

“You knew about me.””

Richard nodded.

“Of course I did.””

“Why?””

“Because Eleanor was always looking for someone to save her.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“You still don’t see it.””

“See what?””

“That she never told you the whole story.””

Vivian shook her head.

“Stop.””

Richard looked at his daughter.

“You know I’m right.””

“Stop.””

“You knew Lily was mine.””

Adrian turned.

“What?””

Vivian’s face collapsed.

“No.””

Richard continued.

“She knew.””

Adrian stared at his wife.

“Vivian?””

Her silence answered.

The pain that followed was worse than anger.

Because anger had movement.

Pain just sat there.

Heavy.

Impossible to escape.

“How long?””

Vivian whispered:

“Adrian…”

“How long did you know?””

She covered her mouth.

“I found out after Eleanor disappeared.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was trying to protect Lily.””

“From what?””

Vivian looked at Richard.

“From him.””

Richard smiled coldly.

“You see? Even now she blames me.””

Adrian looked at the birth certificate again.

Something was wrong.

He had spent years investigating people.

He knew documents.

He knew evidence.

And something about this felt wrong.

“Where did this come from?”” he asked.

Richard looked away.

“The hospital.””

“No.””

Adrian examined the paper.

“The ink.””

Everyone looked at him.

“The ink is newer than the document date.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

Adrian noticed.

“This was altered.””

Nobody moved.

Adrian looked at Vivian.

“Tell me the truth.””

She looked broken.

“I don’t know what’s true anymore.””

“Try.””

She wiped her tears.

“When Eleanor came back, she told me something.””

“What?””

“That Richard was trying to convince everyone Lily was his.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted control.””

Richard scoffed.

“You’re making things dramatic.””

“No.””

Vivian looked at him.

“For once, I’m telling the truth.””

The room became silent.

She continued.

“Eleanor said Richard knew Adrian was the father.””

Adrian froze.

“Me?””

Vivian nodded.

“She said Richard hated that.””

“Why?””

“Because Adrian was the one person Richard couldn’t manipulate.””

Richard’s face darkened.

Adrian remembered.

Years ago.

The investigation.

The documents.

The companies Richard lost.

The reason Richard hated him.

It was never about business.

It was personal.

Richard had not wanted revenge.

He wanted ownership.

Over Eleanor.

Over Lily.

Over the story.

The security panel suddenly beeped.

Everyone turned.

A message appeared.

*NEW FILE RECEIVED.*

Adrian opened it.

A video.

Recorded today.

Eleanor.

Alive.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Adrian, if you’re watching this, Richard has shown you the certificate.””

Adrian pressed play.

Eleanor sighed.

“I knew he would.””

Vivian stepped closer.

On the screen, Eleanor looked older.

Tired.

But peaceful.

“The truth is simple.””

She looked down.

“Lily is not Richard’s daughter.””

Everyone froze.

Adrian stared.

Eleanor continued.

“Richard changed the documents because he wanted a claim over her.””

A pause.

“But there is something else you need to know.””

The camera moved slightly.

Eleanor touched her stomach.

“When I disappeared, I was not running from Richard.””

Adrian leaned closer.

“I was running from someone else.””

Vivian whispered:

“No.””

Eleanor looked directly into the camera.

“Vivian.””

Her sister’s name sounded like forgiveness.

Not accusation.

“I never blamed you.””

Vivian began crying.

“You were young. You were afraid.””

The video paused for a moment.

Then Eleanor said:

“But you need to know why I left.””

The screen glitched.

A second video loaded automatically.

Different date.

Different location.

A hospital room.

Eleanor was sitting beside a newborn baby.

Not Lily.

Another baby.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Because Eleanor was crying.

And beside her was a woman in a nurse’s uniform.

The nurse looked at the camera.

And Adrian recognized her.

She had worked at the hospital where Lily was born.

She was the woman who signed the original records.

The woman who disappeared afterward.

Eleanor whispered:

“She knows the truth.””

The nurse looked frightened.

Then said:

“The baby was switched.””

Nobody moved.

The video ended.

Richard stepped backward.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Adrian turned slowly.

“Richard.””

No answer.

“What did you do?””

Richard said nothing.

Adrian walked toward him.

“You changed the certificate.””

Silence.

“You changed the records.””

Silence.

“You made everyone believe Lily belonged to you.””

Richard finally spoke.

“She belonged to someone.””

“Who?””

His answer was barely audible.

“The child who was supposed to be mine.””

Adrian froze.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked toward the hidden room.

And whispered:

“You don’t know what Eleanor did.””

The lights flickered.

Again.

Then the security system announced:

*FRONT DOOR OPEN.*

Everyone turned.

The door slowly moved.

A woman stood there.

Holding a hospital file.

The nurse from the video.

May you like

And behind her was Eleanor.

Alive.
