Chapter 1: The Man She Humiliated
“Look at you! Still broke after all these years?””
Vanessa's laughter echoed across the marble entrance of Sterling Global Headquarters, loud enough to make several employees turn around.
Marcus Reed stood beside the revolving glass doors, holding a simple black folder beneath one arm. His charcoal suit was clean but modest. His shoes were polished, though clearly not designer. He wore no expensive watch, no flashy jewelry, and no visible signs of wealth.
To Vanessa, that made him an easy target.
She adjusted the oversized sunglasses resting on her head and lifted her designer handbag so the sunlight caught its golden hardware.
Marcus looked at her for a moment.
Then he smiled.
“And you're still confusing money with class.””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
She laughed again, but this time there was irritation beneath it.
“Oh, Marcus. Some things never change. You always thought you were smarter than everyone else. Remember when you couldn't even afford dinner without borrowing money?””
Marcus glanced at the handbag hanging from her wrist.
“Is that what this is about? Money?””
“This?”” Vanessa raised the bag proudly.
“This costs more than you'll ever make in your entire life.””
A security guard near the entrance shifted uncomfortably.
Two young employees slowed their steps.
Vanessa noticed the audience and seemed to enjoy it.
She wanted witnesses.
She wanted Marcus to feel small.
Years earlier, they had attended the same university. Marcus had been the quiet student who worked evening shifts at a restaurant while studying finance. Vanessa had been popular, ambitious, and obsessed with marrying into money.
For a brief period, they had dated.
But when Marcus's father died unexpectedly, Marcus had disappeared from university life for several months to handle family responsibilities.
Vanessa hadn't waited.
She had left him with a message that still occasionally resurfaced in his memory.
I can't build a future with someone who has nothing.
Now she stood in front of him wearing a handbag worth more than his old apartment.
And she clearly believed she had won.
“I'm surprised you're even allowed inside this building,” Vanessa continued.
“Do you work here? Cleaning the offices?””
Marcus looked toward the towering Sterling Global logo above the entrance.
“No. I have a meeting.””
“With whom?”” Vanessa asked.
“Someone important.””
She burst out laughing.
“Oh, please. Let me guess. You're here to ask for a job?””
Marcus didn't answer.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Listen, I don't want to embarrass you, but people like you need to understand something. The world doesn't reward good intentions. It rewards power.
Connections. Money.””
Marcus calmly adjusted his cuff.
“And what do you know about power?””
“I know enough to recognize it.””
She pulled out her phone.
“Actually, speaking of power, let me introduce you to someone.””
She tapped a contact and switched on speakerphone.
“Alexander, darling!””
A confident male voice answered almost immediately.
“Vanessa? I'm about to enter a board meeting. Is everything okay?””
“Everything is wonderful. I'm standing outside your building, and you'll never guess who I just ran into.””
“Who?””
“My old boyfriend. Marcus Reed.””
There was a brief pause.
Then Alexander chuckled.
“The one you told me about? The unemployed college sweetheart?””
“Exactly!””
Vanessa looked directly at Marcus.
“He's still dressing like he has ten dollars in his bank account.””
Marcus said nothing.
Alexander laughed through the phone.
“That's unfortunate. Some people never move forward.””
Vanessa tilted her head.
“Baby, you should see him. He's standing here looking like he belongs in a charity line.””
Marcus finally raised his eyes.
“Vanessa.””
“What?””
“You should be careful about what you say in front of people you don't understand.””
She rolled her eyes.
“Don't start giving me life advice.””
She turned back to the phone.
“Alexander, tell him what you told me about your position. He needs to understand the difference between someone who owns a company and someone who begs outside one.””
Alexander sounded amused.
“I'm the CEO of Sterling Global. This entire building operates under my authority. That should be enough explanation.””
Vanessa practically glowed.
“You hear that, Marcus? My boyfriend is a powerful CEO who owns this world.””
Marcus looked at the phone.
Then he looked at the glass doors.
A faint smile appeared on his face.
“Enjoy showing off,” he said quietly.
“It won't last forever.””
Vanessa's eyebrows tightened.
“What exactly is that supposed to mean?””
Marcus stepped closer.
He didn't raise his voice.
He didn't insult her.
He simply leaned toward the phone and said three words.
“Hello, my CEO.””
Silence.
For a second, Vanessa thought the call had disconnected.
Then Alexander's voice exploded through the speaker.
“Oh! The chairman is standing next to my girlfriend?!””
Vanessa stopped breathing.
Her fingers loosened.
The luxury handbag slipped from her wrist and struck the marble pavement with a heavy thud.
A small gold accessory bounced away.
Marcus looked down at it.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Careful,” he said.
“That thing costs more than I'll ever make, remember?””
But Vanessa wasn't looking at her handbag anymore.
She was staring at the man she had just called broke.
And through the phone, Alexander was already speaking again.
“Marcus, please tell me you're there. I need to explain something before you—”
Marcus calmly interrupted him.
“Alexander, we'll discuss your explanation in the boardroom.””
Vanessa's lips trembled.
“Marcus... what did he just call you?””
Marcus picked up the folder beneath his arm.
“The chairman.””
And then the main entrance opened.
Three senior executives stepped outside.
All three immediately straightened their backs when they saw Marcus.
“Good morning, Mr. Reed.””
Vanessa felt the ground disappear beneath her feet.
Because suddenly, she understood that the man she had humiliated wasn't visiting Sterling Global.
May you like
He was the reason Sterling Global existed.
And she had just insulted him in front of its entire headquarters.
