Chapter 5: The Woman Who Disappeared

The voice on the recording was not a ghost.

It was worse.

It was a person.

A real person who had been alive, terrified, and begging someone to listen.

Adrian played the audio again.

The penthouse remained silent except for Eleanor’s voice.

“If Vivian ever has a daughter… tell her I was trying to save her.””

Then static.

A faint movement.

A door closing.

And a second voice.

A younger Vivian.

“Eleanor, please.””

Adrian stopped the recording.

He looked at his wife.

“Explain.””

Vivian did not answer.

She stood beside the glass windows, staring down at the city.

Thousands of lights flickered below.

People living ordinary lives.

People who had no idea that a woman’s entire history had been hidden behind a wall.

“Vivian.””

Her shoulders moved slightly.

“I was twenty.””

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“I was twenty years old, Adrian.””

“And Eleanor?””

“She was twenty.””

“You told me she died.””

“She did.””

“But this recording was made after her death?””

“No.””

The answer was barely a whisper.

Adrian felt his stomach tighten.

“When was this recorded?””

Vivian closed her eyes.

“Twelve years ago.””

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

She turned around.

“It’s not.””

The confidence in her voice was gone.

Only exhaustion remained.

“Eleanor disappeared twelve years ago.””

Adrian stared.

“You said she died.””

“I said what everyone believed.””

Maya stepped closer.

“Everyone?””

Vivian looked at her.

“Yes.””

“Who believed?””

“My father. The police. The newspapers.””

“And you?””

Vivian looked away.

That was enough.

Adrian understood.

“You knew.””

A tear slipped down Vivian’s cheek.

“I knew something happened.””

“Something?””

“Eleanor came to me that night.””

The room seemed to shrink.

“What night?””

“The night she disappeared.””

Adrian walked closer.

“Tell me everything.””

Vivian shook her head.

“I can’t.””

“You can.””

“You don’t understand what she was trying to protect us from.””

“Then make me understand.””

She looked toward Lily.

The little girl was sitting beside Maya, holding the photograph of Eleanor.

“She was pregnant.””

Nobody spoke.

The word hung in the room.

Adrian looked at the photograph.

Then at Lily.

Then back at Vivian.

“Eleanor was pregnant?””

Vivian nodded.

“She didn’t know who she could trust.””

“Why?””

“Because the father was someone dangerous.””

“Who?””

Vivian’s lips parted.

But before she could answer, Evelyn spoke.

“My husband.””

Adrian turned.

The older woman’s face had gone pale.

“Your father?”” he asked.

Vivian nodded.

Richard Vale.

A name Adrian recognized.

A wealthy investor.

A respected philanthropist.

A man whose portrait hung in museums.

A man who had attended Adrian’s wedding.

“He was forty-eight,” Evelyn said quietly.

“And Eleanor?””

“Twenty.””

Adrian looked at Vivian.

“You knew?””

“I found out that night.””

“And you did nothing?””

Vivian flinched.

The guilt in her face was immediate.

“I was scared.””

“For twelve years?””

“Yes.””

The honesty was worse than another lie.

Adrian stepped back.

Maya held Lily closer.

“You let everyone believe she was dead.””

Vivian looked at Maya.

“I was a child.””

“You were twenty.””

“And you have never been terrified of losing everything?””

Maya went quiet.

Because she understood fear.

But not this.

Not protecting evil because you were afraid of what it would cost you.

Adrian walked to the security panel.

“Why was this room built?””

Vivian swallowed.

“Because Eleanor needed somewhere to hide.””

“From your father?””

“Yes.””

“Here?””

“She trusted my mother.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“I failed her.””

The words were so quiet Adrian almost missed them.

“You knew?””

Evelyn looked at the floor.

“I knew Richard was dangerous.””

“Then why didn’t you help her?””

“Because I was afraid.””

The same answer.

Everyone in that family had been afraid.

And someone innocent had paid the price.

Adrian opened the recovered file.

There were more recordings.

Dozens.

Most damaged.

One caught his attention.

A date.

Three days after Eleanor disappeared.

He pressed play.

A younger Vivian appeared.

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was messy.

Her face swollen from crying.

She sat inside the hidden room.

Holding something.

A baby blanket.

Then Eleanor’s voice came through the speaker.

Not from the room.

From a phone recording.

“Vivian, if you’re hearing this, I’m gone.””

The younger Vivian covered her mouth.

“Eleanor…”

“I know you want to believe I ran away. I know you want to believe I abandoned you.””

A pause.

“But I didn’t.””

Adrian watched his wife’s younger face break.

“Richard found out.””

Static.

Then:

“He knows about the baby.””

The recording ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Lily whispered:

“Daddy.””

Adrian looked at her.

The child pointed at the hidden door.

“He’s coming.””

A cold silence filled the penthouse.

“Who?”” Adrian asked.

Lily looked toward the locked room.

“The bad man.””

At that exact moment, the elevator indicator outside the penthouse door lit up.

Floor 52.

Someone was coming up.

Nobody had been invited.

Nobody had been announced.

Adrian checked the security screen.

The camera showed an older man standing outside.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

Calm expression.

Richard Vale.

Vivian’s father.

And beneath his image, the security system displayed a message:
