Chapter 7: The Daughter He Never Knew
Adrian read the letter twice.
Then a third time.
Because his mind refused to accept the words.
The letter was dated twelve years earlier.
Three days before Eleanor disappeared.
Adrian,
If Vivian gives you this letter, it means she finally chose the truth over fear.
He looked up.
Vivian was crying silently.
You do not know me. But I know about you.
Eleanor told me everything.
Adrian stopped.
Everything?
How?
The letter continued.
She told me about the man who helped her once. The businessman who exposed Richard Vale’s illegal deals. The man who destroyed Richard’s reputation before he rebuilt it.
Adrian stared.
That was him.
Twelve years ago, before Cross Industries became what it was, Adrian had worked as an investigator.
He had exposed corruption.
Including one of Richard Vale’s companies.
But he never knew the personal connection.
Eleanor trusted you because she believed you were the only person Richard could not buy.
Adrian looked at Richard.
The older man’s face was unreadable.
But there is something you need to know.
His hands tightened.
Lily is not only Eleanor’s daughter.
A pause.
She is yours.
The room disappeared.
Adrian stopped hearing everything.
No.
Impossible.
He looked at Vivian.
She could not meet his eyes.
“Say it,” he whispered.
Vivian shook her head.
“Adrian…”
“Say it.””
Her voice broke.
“Eleanor was pregnant when she disappeared.””
“That doesn’t answer me.””
“She found out after you helped her.””
His chest tightened.
“She told you?””
Vivian nodded.
“She came to me because she was scared. She knew Richard would come after the baby.””
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because Richard was watching you.””
Adrian laughed once.
A broken sound.
“So everyone knew except me?””
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
He looked at Lily.
Four years old.
Small hands.
Big frightened eyes.
His daughter.
A daughter he had loved since the day she was born.
But not in the way he thought.
“Lily.””
The child looked up.
He knelt.
“Come here.””
She hesitated.
Then walked into his arms.
Adrian held her.
And everything else became noise.
“I’m your daddy,” he whispered.
Lily nodded.
“I know.””
The simplicity of it destroyed him.
“You knew?””
“Mama said.””
“Which mama?””
Lily looked toward the photograph.
“Eleanor.””
Vivian covered her face.
Adrian looked at Richard.
“You knew.””
Richard said nothing.
“You knew she was my daughter.””
“Yes.””
The answer came calmly.
Adrian stood.
“Why?””
Richard’s expression remained cold.
“Because she was leverage.””
Maya gasped.
Vivian looked horrified.
“You sick—”
Adrian grabbed Richard’s collar.
“Leverage?””
Richard did not fight.
“She was the only thing Eleanor loved more than revenge.””
Adrian shoved him back.
“You murdered her.””
Richard straightened his jacket.
“You think that because it’s easier.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
Richard looked at the hidden room.
For the first time, his confidence weakened.
“She came here.””
“When?””
“The night she disappeared.””
Adrian waited.
“She brought Lily.””
“No.””
“She wanted to hide her.””
“Where is Eleanor?””
Richard looked at Vivian.
“She knew.””
Vivian froze.
“No.””
“You knew where she went.””
“No.””
“You were there.””
Vivian backed away.
“Dad.””
Adrian turned toward her.
“You were there?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was trying to help her.””
“What happened?””
Vivian shook her head.
“I don’t remember everything.””
Richard laughed quietly.
“Of course you don’t.””
Adrian looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn spoke.
“Because I found her unconscious.””
The room froze.
Adrian turned.
“What?””
Evelyn looked destroyed.
“That night. I found Vivian in the hidden room.””
“What about Eleanor?””
Evelyn looked at Richard.
“She was gone.””
“Gone where?””
Nobody knew.
Or nobody wanted to say.
Then Adrian’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone stared.
He answered.
At first, there was only static.
Then a woman breathed.
“Adrian.””
His blood turned cold.
He knew that voice.
Not from memory.
From recordings.
“Eleanor?””
Vivian grabbed his arm.
The voice continued.
“I’m sorry it took twelve years.””
Adrian could barely speak.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“Close.””
The line crackled.
“I need you to listen carefully.””
“What?””
“Richard is not the only person who lied.””
Adrian looked at Vivian.
The woman on the phone whispered:
May you like
“Ask your wife what happened the night she found me.””
Then the call ended.
