Chapter 4: The Name in the Box

The woman entered the penthouse ten minutes later.

Adrian allowed it because he wanted answers.

Not because he trusted her.

Her name was Evelyn Vale.

Vivian’s mother.

A woman Adrian had met exactly three times during his marriage.

Three times too many, according to Vivian.

“She’s manipulative,” Vivian had once told him.

“She ruins everything she touches.””

At the time, Adrian believed his wife.

Now he wondered how many other things he had believed without asking questions.

Evelyn placed the wooden box on the marble table.

She looked around the penthouse.

“This place still feels like a museum.””

Vivian’s face was cold.

“Leave.””

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“You always say that when you’re scared.””

“I’m not scared.””

“You’re wearing the same expression you wore when you were eight.””

Adrian watched his wife.

Eight.

A child.

A memory hidden beneath years of expensive clothes and perfect photographs.

“What is in the box?”” he asked.

Evelyn looked at him.

“The reason your wife has spent twelve years pretending a dead woman never existed.””

Vivian’s voice cracked.

“Stop.””

Adrian opened the box.

Inside was a photograph.

A young woman.

Early twenties.

Dark hair.

A gentle smile.

And in her arms…

a baby.

Adrian looked closer.

The baby had a familiar birthmark.

A tiny crescent shape near the left shoulder.

Lily had the same mark.

His fingers tightened around the photograph.

“Who is this?””

Evelyn answered quietly.

“Eleanor.””

The name landed like a stone.

“Who is Eleanor?””

Vivian sat down.

For the first time all night, she looked small.

“Adrian…”

“No.””

He placed the photo on the table.

“No more half-truths.””

Lily watched her mother.

Maya stood behind her, protective.

Evelyn opened her mouth.

Vivian interrupted.

“She was my sister.””

The room went silent.

“My twin sister,” Vivian continued.

Adrian stared.

“I had a twin?””

“You had a sister-in-law.””

“I had a sister-in-law who was apparently living in our walls?””

Vivian looked away.

“She died when we were twenty.””

“How?””

No answer.

That was the answer.

Adrian felt anger rising.

Not explosive.

Something colder.

“You lied to me.””

“I protected myself.””

“You lied about a person who was part of your life.””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Vivian’s eyes filled with tears.

But Adrian did not know if they were real.

Not anymore.

“Eleanor was the favorite,” she whispered.

Evelyn looked down.

“She was kind.””

Vivian laughed bitterly.

“I was invisible.””

Adrian said nothing.

“She sang that song to me when we were children,” Vivian said.

Her voice became quieter.

“She used to say it was a promise.””

“What promise?””

“That she would always come back for me.””

A chill moved through the room.

Maya looked at Lily.

The child was humming again.

Adrian turned.

“Lily.””

The little girl stopped.

“Who taught you the song?””

She pointed at the photograph.

Everyone froze.

Adrian slowly looked down.

At Eleanor.

At the woman who had been dead for twelve years.

“No,” Vivian whispered.

Lily walked closer.

She touched the photograph.

“She said Mommy forgot her.””

Vivian backed away.

“That’s impossible.””

Evelyn’s face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“You heard her too.””

Vivian looked at her mother.

“What?””

Evelyn’s voice trembled.

“You think I don’t know why you kept this apartment?””

Nobody moved.

The hidden door in the nursery remained locked.

The security camera continued blinking.

And then Adrian’s phone buzzed.

One notification.

From the security system.

A new recording had been uploaded.

Timestamp:

Twelve years ago.

Location:

The locked room.

Adrian opened it.

The video began.

A younger Vivian appeared on the screen.

Crying.

Standing beside Eleanor.

And then Eleanor turned toward the camera.

Alive.

Terrified.

She whispered:

“Adrian Cross doesn’t know the truth.””

The video paused.

Then a second line appeared.

*Recovered audio attached.*

Adrian pressed play.

And the first thing he heard was Eleanor’s voice:

“If Vivian ever has a daughter… tell her I was trying to save her.””
