Chapter 2: The Woman Behind the Door

Adrian had always believed people revealed themselves under pressure.

His father taught him that.

“Anyone can pretend when life is comfortable,” Richard Cross used to say.

“Watch what happens when they think they’re losing.””

Adrian had watched CEOs collapse during negotiations.

He had watched executives betray partners over money.

He had watched strangers become monsters when they thought nobody was looking.

But he had never expected to watch his wife.

The woman who had slept beside him for twelve years.

The woman who had held Lily the day she was born.

The woman who had cried when their daughter said her first word.

Now she stood in their living room, asking him to ignore a recording.

That was not something innocent people did.

“Play the rest,” Adrian said.

Vivian’s jaw tightened.

“Adrian.””

“Play it.””

Maya remained on the floor with Lily.

The little girl had fallen silent again.

But her eyes stayed on Vivian.

The screen continued.

The recording showed the same room.

The same white sofa.

The same expensive furniture chosen by an interior designer who had never once lived in it.

Vivian knelt in front of Lily.

At first, her expression was gentle.

Almost loving.

“Where did you hear that song?”” she asked.

Little Lily swung her legs.

“My dream.””

“Who sang it?””

The child looked toward the hallway.

“The lady.””

Vivian went still.

“What lady?””

“The lady behind the door.””

The real Vivian in the room whispered, “Stop.””

Adrian ignored her.

On the screen, Lily smiled.

“She said Mommy forgot.””

A cold feeling moved through Adrian’s chest.

“What does that mean?”” Maya whispered.

No one answered.

Because Vivian suddenly walked toward the security panel.

On the recording.

She was not looking at Lily anymore.

She was looking directly at the camera.

Like she knew exactly where it was.

Like she knew Adrian would watch.

Then the screen went black.

Adrian stared.

“That’s it?””

Vivian exhaled.

“She was playing with the system. Kids touch things.””

“You deleted the rest.””

“No.””

“You know the password.””

“So do you.””

“Not the backup.””

Silence.

Maya looked between them.

“The backup?””

Adrian did not answer.

The Cross family had a private security server hidden beneath the penthouse.

Not because they were famous.

Because Adrian was rich enough to know that privacy became a luxury once everyone wanted something from you.

Every hallway.

Every entrance.

Every room.

Except the bedrooms.

Except the bathrooms.

Except the nursery.

The nursery.

Adrian looked toward the hallway.

The room suddenly felt much farther away than it was.

“When did Lily start singing this?”” he asked.

Vivian folded her arms.

“I don’t know.””

“You do.””

“I said I don’t know.””

Her voice rose.

That was unusual.

Vivian did not yell.

She weaponized calm.

That was how she won arguments.

She made everyone else feel emotional while she appeared reasonable.

But now the mask was slipping.

Maya carefully stood.

“Mr. Cross…”

Adrian looked at her.

“Tell me.””

She swallowed.

“I’ve heard her sing it before.””

Vivian’s eyes snapped toward her.

“Maya.””

Adrian’s voice sharpened.

“When?””

Maya looked down.

“Three weeks ago.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

Maya hesitated.

“The night you were in Chicago.””

Adrian remembered.

He had called home.

Vivian answered.

She said Lily was asleep.

She said everything was fine.

“Why didn’t you leave a message?””

Maya’s fingers tightened around Lily’s blanket.

“Because Mrs. Cross told me if I ever scared you with imaginary stories again, she would make sure I never worked in this city.””

The silence afterward was heavier than any accusation.

Adrian looked at Vivian.

“Did you say that?””

Vivian laughed once.

A small, sharp sound.

“You’re believing the nanny?””

“I asked if you said it.””

“You’re seriously doing this?””

“Answer me.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Yes.””

One word.

No apology.

No shame.

“Yes, I said it.””

Maya looked away.

Adrian felt something inside him shift.

Not break.

Not yet.

But move.

A foundation cracking.

“You threatened her.””

“I warned her.””

“She’s taking care of our daughter.””

“And I’m protecting our daughter.””

“From what?””

Vivian looked toward Lily.

For a moment, Adrian saw something strange.

Not hatred.

Not anger.

Possession.

Like Lily was something Vivian owned.

Then it disappeared.

“I think Maya is unstable,” Vivian said.

Maya laughed quietly.

It was not a happy sound.

“Unstable?””

Everyone looked at her.

For the first time, the nanny stepped forward.

“I have worked here every day. I have watched Lily wake up crying because she says someone is standing outside her bedroom door.””

Vivian shook her head.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Maya’s voice trembled.

But she continued.

“She says the woman sings that song.””

Adrian looked at Lily.

His daughter stared at the floor.

“Lily,” he said softly.

The little girl looked up.

“Who is the woman?””

Her lower lip shook.

“She said not to tell.””

“Who said that?””

Lily pointed.

Not at Maya.

Not at Vivian.

At the hallway.

At the closed door beside the nursery.

“The woman who lives there.””

Adrian frowned.

“No one lives there.””

Lily whispered:

“She does.””

Then the lights went out.

The penthouse fell into darkness.

Vivian gasped.

Maya grabbed Lily.

And from somewhere deep inside the hallway…

May you like

came the sound of a woman humming.

The same lullaby.
