Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath the Silence
Vivian did not cry this time.
She went completely still.
Adrian had seen that expression before.
In business meetings.
In negotiations.
The moment someone realized the truth was no longer something they could control.
“Vivian.””
She looked at him.
“I can explain.””
Those words were always dangerous.
People said them when explanation was already too late.
“Did you know she was alive?””
“No.””
“Did you?””
“No.””
Adrian studied her.
Then he looked at the hidden room.
The room that had been waiting twelve years.
Waiting for someone to open it.
“What happened that night?””
Vivian closed her eyes.
“I remember pieces.””
“Start with the first piece.””
She sat down.
“I was angry.””
No one expected that.
“I was jealous.””
Her voice shook.
“Eleanor always had something I didn’t.””
Adrian listened.
“She was kind. Everyone loved her. Richard treated her like she was precious.””
“And you?””
“I was the difficult one.””
She laughed sadly.
“The disappointment.””
Richard looked away.
For once, he did not deny it.
“That night Eleanor came here with Lily.””
Adrian held his daughter tighter.
“She was a baby.””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
Vivian swallowed.
“She said Richard knew. She said he would come after Lily.””
“Then what?””
“I told her we needed to call the police.””
“You did?””
“No.””
The confession was quiet.
“I was afraid.””
Again.
That word.
Fear.
The family’s inheritance.
“What did you do?””
Vivian looked at Adrian.
“I called my father.””
Adrian felt anger rise.
“You called Richard?””
“I thought he would help.””
Maya whispered:
“You brought him here.””
Vivian looked down.
“Yes.””
Silence.
“Then what?””
“Eleanor saw him.””
“And?””
“She ran.””
“Where?””
Vivian looked toward the hidden room.
“She locked herself inside.””
Adrian frowned.
“And you?””
“I tried to open the door.””
“Did you?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Vivian’s face broke.
“Because my father told me not to.””
Everyone stared.
Richard finally spoke.
“She was unstable.””
Adrian turned.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
Adrian stepped forward.
“You keep saying it because if you admit she was telling the truth, you lose everything.””
Richard’s expression hardened.
“You know nothing about what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
Richard was silent.
That silence lasted too long.
Then the hidden room alarm activated.
Everyone jumped.
The security panel lit up.
A new message appeared.
*REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED.*
Adrian stared.
“Someone else is inside the system.””
The screen changed.
A live camera feed appeared.
Not from the penthouse.
From another location.
A small room.
Old furniture.
A woman sitting in front of the camera.
Older.
Thinner.
But alive.
Eleanor.
Vivian gasped.
“No.””
The woman looked directly into the camera.
“Hello, Vivian.””
Vivian stepped back.
Adrian could not move.
Eleanor smiled sadly.
“I know you’re all wondering why I never came back.””
Richard walked toward the screen.
“No.””
For the first time, he looked terrified.
Eleanor continued.
“I didn’t come back because I was protecting Lily.””
Adrian stared.
“Where are you?””
Eleanor looked at the camera.
“Somewhere Richard cannot reach.””
Richard grabbed the keyboard.
The feed disappeared.
Adrian turned on him.
“You knew.””
Richard said nothing.
“You knew she was alive.””
“She should have stayed gone.””
The sentence was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Vivian looked at her father like she was seeing him for the first time.
“You tried to erase her.””
Richard’s face hardened.
“She ruined everything.””
“No.””
Vivian shook her head.
“She saved everything.””
Richard looked at Lily.
And Adrian saw something that chilled him.
Not hatred.
Calculation.
“She was never supposed to survive.””
Adrian moved instantly.
He pushed Lily behind Maya.
“You’re done.””
Richard smiled.
“No.””
He reached into his coat.
Maya screamed.
Adrian grabbed him.
The two men crashed into the table.
The wooden box fell.
The hospital bracelet slid across the floor.
And underneath it was another piece of paper.
A birth certificate.
Adrian picked it up.
His eyes scanned the page.
Then stopped.
Because the father’s name was not blank.
It was not Adrian Cross.
It was another name.
A name that made Vivian collapse.
A name that made Richard whisper:
“Impossible.””
Adrian looked up.
The document belonged to Lily.
May you like
And the father listed on it was:
*Richard Vale.*
