Chapter 6: The Father’s Door

Adrian did not open the door.

For ten seconds, nobody spoke.

Richard Vale stood outside like a man arriving for dinner.

Not like a man whose secrets had just been dragged into the light.

The doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

Then Richard’s voice came through the speaker.

“Vivian.””

His daughter froze.

Not dramatically.

Not like someone afraid of a stranger.

Like someone hearing a voice from childhood.

A voice that still had power over her.

“Open the door.””

Adrian looked at her.

“You gave him access?””

Vivian shook her head.

“No.””

The security panel beeped.

The lock disengaged.

Adrian immediately pressed the manual override.

Nothing happened.

“He controls the system,” Evelyn whispered.

Adrian turned.

“What?””

“Richard installed the original security system.””

The door handle moved.

Maya grabbed Lily.

Adrian stepped between them and the entrance.

The door opened.

Richard Vale walked inside.

He looked exactly like the photographs.

Silver hair.

Perfect suit.

Warm smile.

A grandfather’s smile.

That was what made him dangerous.

“Adrian,” he said.

No panic.

No surprise.

Just disappointment.

“I was hoping we could avoid this.””

Adrian stared.

“You knew.””

Richard looked around.

“I know many things.””

“You knew about Eleanor.””

A slight pause.

Then Richard sighed.

“Ah.””

That one sound confirmed everything.

Vivian whispered:

“Dad.””

Richard looked at her.

“You should have listened to me.””

Adrian’s hands curled into fists.

“You threatened her.””

Richard smiled.

“Careful.””

“Or what?””

“You’re angry. Understandable. But anger makes people careless.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“You hurt your daughter.””

“No.””

Richard looked at Vivian.

“She hurt herself.””

Vivian looked like she had been slapped.

“What?””

“You always had a weakness, Vivian. You confused love with loyalty.””

Richard walked toward the table.

He picked up the photograph of Eleanor.

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But Adrian saw it.

Regret.

Real regret.

“You loved her,” Adrian said.

Richard put the photograph down.

“She was my daughter.””

“No.””

Adrian’s voice hardened.

“She was your victim.””

Richard looked at him.

Then laughed softly.

“You have no idea what happened.””

“Then tell me.””

“I tried to protect this family.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You destroyed it.””

Richard ignored her.

“Eleanor was unstable.””

Vivian’s face changed.

“No.””

“She became obsessed.””

“No.””

“She accused me.””

Richard looked at Adrian.

“She made everyone believe terrible things.””

Adrian stared.

“And did she?””

Richard said nothing.

That was enough.

Vivian moved closer.

“Where is she?””

Richard looked at his daughter.

“What?””

“You know.””

“No.””

“You know where Eleanor is.””

Richard’s face hardened.

For the first time, the charming mask disappeared.

“She’s dead.””

Lily started crying.

Not loudly.

Just quietly.

Like she was trying not to be noticed.

Adrian immediately turned.

“What’s wrong?””

The little girl looked at Richard.

“He’s lying.””

Nobody moved.

Richard stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Lily hid behind Maya.

“He’s lying.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Not anger.

Recognition.

He knew.

He knew Lily.

Adrian noticed.

“You’ve seen her before.””

Richard looked away.

That was his mistake.

“You’ve been here.””

“No.””

“You’ve been inside this apartment.””

“No.””

“You know my daughter.””

Richard’s silence answered.

Adrian moved toward him.

“How?””

Richard stepped back.

“Ask your wife.””

All eyes turned to Vivian.

She looked shattered.

“Vivian?””

She swallowed.

“Before Lily was born…”

She stopped.

Adrian waited.

“Eleanor came back.””

The room went silent.

“She was alive?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two years after she disappeared.””

“Where?””

Vivian looked at the floor.

“Here.””

Adrian stared.

“You saw her?””

Vivian nodded.

“She was sick.””

“What happened?””

Vivian started crying.

“She gave me the baby.””

Nobody breathed.

“She said Richard had found her. She said she couldn’t keep Lily safe.””

Adrian looked at the child.

His child.

“Lily?””

Vivian nodded.

“Eleanor was her mother.””

The words broke something inside the room.

Maya covered her mouth.

Adrian felt like the floor moved beneath him.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

He stepped back.

“Lily is my daughter.””

“She is.””

Vivian cried.

“But she was born from Eleanor.””

Richard watched silently.

And Adrian realized something.

Richard was not surprised.

He already knew.

“How did Lily end up with us?”” Adrian asked.

Vivian looked at him.

“Because Eleanor died that night.””

“How?””

Vivian opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

A sound came from the hallway.

A soft humming.

The lullaby.

Everyone turned.

The hidden door was open.

Nobody had opened it.

Inside was darkness.

And on the floor sat a small wooden box.

With a note attached.

Adrian walked toward it.

The handwriting was familiar.

From the old recordings.

Eleanor.

The note said:

*Adrian, if you are reading this, Vivian finally told you the truth.*

He opened the box.

Inside was a hospital bracelet.

A photograph.

And a letter.

May you like

The first line made him stop breathing.

*Lily was never the child Richard wanted to destroy. She was the child he needed to find.*
