Chapter 8: The Name Hidden in Blood

Elena didn't speak.

She couldn't.

The words didn't make sense.

They floated in the room like smoke.

Your mother was a Sterling.

Impossible.

Her mother had been Clara Bennett.

A woman who worked two jobs.

A woman who clipped grocery coupons.

A woman who cried when Elena got her first scholarship.

A woman who never mentioned wealth.

Never mentioned power.

Never mentioned the Sterling family.

"No.""

The word came out quietly.

Julian looked at her.

"I know how it sounds.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"My mother wasn't...""

She couldn't finish.

Vivian gently placed the document down.

"Your mother changed her name.""

"Why?""

"Because she knew what the Sterling family was capable of.""

Elena stared.

"She ran away?""

"Yes.""

"From them?""

Vivian nodded.

"From Richard Sterling.""

The name felt heavier now.

Every secret led back to him.

The man who built an empire.

The man whose children were fighting over his legacy.

The man whose choices had destroyed lives decades after his death.

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Vivian looked sad.

"Because she wanted you to have a normal life.""

Elena laughed once.

A broken sound.

"Normal?""

She looked around the private hospital suite.

At the expensive room.

At the family documents.

At the baby who had unknowingly inherited a war.

"Nothing about this is normal.""

Her phone buzzed.

A message.

From Chloe.

Elena stared at the name.

Then opened it.

*We need to talk. Alone.*

Nora immediately stepped forward.

"No.""

Elena looked at her.

"She knows.""

"Exactly why you shouldn't go.""

But Elena knew something.

Running had never protected her.

She ran from the divorce.

She ran from the humiliation.

She ran from the Sterling name.

And somehow, it followed her anyway.

"I need answers.""

Julian appeared on the phone.

"Don't meet her.""

Elena looked at him.

"Why?""

"Because Chloe doesn't ask for private conversations.""

A pause.

"She arranges traps.""

Elena studied his face.

The irony wasn't lost on her.

The man who had once been her biggest threat was now warning her about someone else.

But maybe that was the difference.

Maybe they were finally standing on the same side.

"Where is she?""

Julian looked away.

"She left the cathedral.""

"Where?""

"I don't know.""

A second message arrived.

Not from Chloe.

From an unknown number.

A location.

A time.

And one sentence.

*Come alone if you want to know why your mother disappeared.*

Elena stared.

Vivian saw the message.

Her face changed.

"No.""

"What?""

Vivian stepped closer.

"That isn't Chloe.""

Elena frowned.

"How do you know?""

"Because Chloe would never tell you about your mother.""

"Why?""

Vivian looked terrified.

"Because Chloe doesn't know the truth.""

The room went silent.

"Then who sent it?""

Nobody answered.

Then Julian's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

"Who is it?""

He didn't respond.

"Julian.""

Slowly, he answered.

Everyone watched.

A voice came through.

An older man's voice.

Calm.

Cold.

Impossible.

Julian turned white.

"That's not possible.""

Elena stood frozen.

"What?""

Julian looked at her.

And whispered:

"My father is alive.""

May you like

The line went dead.

And somewhere in New York City, the man who started the Sterling war had finally returned.
