Chapter 6: The Bride With a Hidden Past

Julian had spent his entire life believing he could control a room.

He controlled board meetings.

Press conferences.

Family negotiations.

Even his own emotions.

But standing at the side entrance of St. Patrick's Cathedral, watching Chloe Mercer walk toward the altar, he realized he had never controlled anything.

He had only been allowed to believe he did.

The cathedral was overflowing.

Politicians.

Business leaders.

Celebrity guests.

People who had spent years trying to get close to the Sterling name.

They all stood as Chloe moved through the aisle.

She looked perfect.

Of course she did.

Her ivory gown was designed by one of the world's most expensive designers.

Her hair was flawless.

Her smile was effortless.

Every camera loved her.

Every person admired her.

Except Julian.

Because now he noticed the details he had ignored.

The way she looked toward the back of the cathedral before reaching him.

The way she seemed nervous.

Not excited.

Nervous.

Like someone waiting for a signal.

Then he saw the person standing near the entrance.

A man.

Older.

Gray suit.

Julian recognized him.

And his stomach dropped.

"Victor.""

The name left his mouth quietly.

The man smiled.

Not warmly.

Victor Sterling.

His father's younger son.

The secret everyone buried.

The man who shouldn't exist.

The man who now stood inside Julian's wedding ceremony.

Chloe reached the altar.

The priest began speaking.

But Julian barely heard anything.

Because Victor was watching him.

And smiling.

A few hours earlier, Julian had been the most powerful man in the cathedral.

Now he felt like a stranger in his own wedding.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Elena.

*Who is Victor?*

Julian stared at the screen.

Then at Chloe.

Then at the man who shared his father's blood.

He typed:

*I don't know.*

He deleted it.

Because it was a lie.

He knew exactly who Victor was.

He just didn't know what he was capable of.

At Mount Sinai, Elena watched Julian's silence.

She knew him.

Even after everything.

She knew when he was calculating.

When he was afraid.

When he was hiding something.

And right now?

He was terrified.

"Julian.""

Nothing.

"Look at me.""

The camera shifted slightly.

His face appeared.

Pale.

Exhausted.

"You knew.""

It wasn't a question.

Julian swallowed.

"I knew my father had another child.""

Elena's chest tightened.

"You knew?""

"Not like this.""

"How much?""

He looked away.

"Enough.""

The word hurt.

Enough.

Enough to protect himself.

Enough to let her believe she was the problem.

Enough to destroy their marriage while holding information that could change everything.

"When did you find out?""

"After my father's funeral.""

"And you said nothing?""

"I was trying to understand it.""

"No.""

Elena shook her head.

"You were trying to control it.""

Julian didn't argue.

Because she was right.

"You let me believe I was being replaced because Chloe was younger.""

"Elena.""

"You let me believe I wasn't enough.""

Her voice cracked.

"And all along, you were fighting to keep a fortune that was never guaranteed.""

Julian closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked exactly like the man she married.

Lost.

Human.

But Elena remembered something important.

Pain didn't erase damage.

"Why did you divorce me?""

The question surprised him.

"Because we were broken.""

"No.""

She shook her head.

"That wasn't the whole reason.""

Julian remained silent.

"You needed me gone.""

The silence answered.

"You needed a clean image.""

"Elena...""

"You needed everyone to believe you had no weaknesses.""

The truth was painful.

But it was finally visible.

Julian whispered:

"I thought I was protecting you.""

She stared at him.

"You destroyed me to protect me?""

"I thought if Chloe got what she wanted, she would leave you alone.""

Elena froze.

"What?""

Julian looked at her.

"Chloe wasn't interested in me.""

A cold feeling spread through her.

"Then what was she interested in?""

Before he could answer, Chloe appeared beside him on the phone screen.

Not physically.

On the television behind him.

The cathedral cameras had switched to the bride.

And Chloe was smiling.

But Elena noticed something.

The smile wasn't for the guests.

It was for the camera.

For someone watching.

Then Chloe lifted her hand.

A small movement.

A signal.

Julian noticed too.

His expression changed.

"She knows.""

"Knows what?""

He looked at Elena.

"That we found out.""

At that exact moment, every screen inside the cathedral went black.

The music stopped.

The guests gasped.

Then the screens turned on again.

Not with wedding photos.

Not with a tribute.

With documents.

Private documents.

Sterling family documents.

The entire cathedral watched as years of secrets appeared above the altar.

And the first page had one name.

ELENA STERLING.
