Chapter 7: The Daughter They Buried
The cathedral erupted.
People who had spent their lives pretending to be untouchable suddenly looked terrified.
The wedding guests whispered.
Phones appeared.
Cameras lifted.
The same society crowd that had gathered to celebrate Julian and Chloe was now witnessing the collapse of the Sterling empire.
On every screen:
PRIVATE TRUST AGREEMENT.
CONFIDENTIAL.
STERLING FAMILY HOLDINGS.
Julian stared upward.
His face drained of color.
"No.""
Chloe stood beside him.
Perfect posture.
Perfect makeup.
Perfect smile.
Until she realized the cameras were no longer focused on her.
They were focused on the truth.
"What did you do?""
Julian turned toward her.
For the first time, he looked at Chloe not as his future wife.
But as a stranger.
She didn't answer.
That was enough.
"You knew about the documents.""
Chloe's expression hardened.
"I knew about many things.""
The priest stepped backward.
The guests moved away.
Everyone suddenly wanted distance from the explosion.
Julian lowered his voice.
"Who are you?""
Chloe laughed softly.
Not nervously.
Not sadly.
Like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.
"You really don't know, do you?""
Julian stared.
"My mother hired you.""
"Yes.""
"To destroy my marriage?""
"No.""
She stepped closer.
"Your marriage was already destroyed.""
The words struck him.
Because a small part of him knew she was right.
"But you helped.""
Chloe smiled.
"I helped expose what was always there.""
Meanwhile, Elena watched from the hospital room.
Vivian stood beside her.
"What is happening?""
Vivian looked at the screen.
"The Sterling family is finally telling the truth.""
"No.""
Elena shook her head.
"Someone is controlling the truth.""
Vivian looked at her.
And for the first time, she smiled slightly.
"Good.""
Elena frowned.
"What?""
"You're starting to think like a Sterling.""
"I don't want to be a Sterling.""
Vivian looked at the baby.
"That may not be your choice anymore.""
Elena hated that answer.
Because it sounded too familiar.
The Sterling family had always treated people like pieces on a board.
Including her.
Especially her.
Her phone rang.
Julian.
She answered immediately.
"What is happening?""
His voice was different.
Broken.
"Chloe is Margaret's daughter.""
Elena went still.
"What?""
Julian looked around the cathedral.
"Not Victor.""
A pause.
"Chloe.""
The world stopped.
Elena looked at Vivian.
The older woman nodded slowly.
"She finally revealed it.""
"No.""
Elena whispered.
"How?""
Julian answered:
"My father had two children.""
The truth unfolded piece by piece.
"Victor was the son everyone buried because he threatened the company.""
"And Chloe?""
Julian looked toward the altar.
"Chloe was the daughter my mother protected.""
Elena felt sick.
The woman who smiled at her.
The woman who called her family.
The woman who helped destroy her marriage.
Was the hidden heir.
"Why?""
Julian's voice cracked.
"Because Margaret believed she deserved everything.""
Elena remembered the coldness.
The calculation.
The way Margaret always looked at her.
Not as family.
As competition.
"Chloe didn't want to marry you.""
Julian laughed bitterly.
"No.""
"She wanted your name.""
"Yes.""
The answer was almost a whisper.
Then Elena asked the question that mattered.
"Why me?""
Julian looked at the hospital bed through the phone.
"I don't know.""
Vivian stepped forward.
"I do.""
Elena turned.
Vivian looked at her.
"Because Chloe discovered something six months ago.""
"What?""
Vivian's expression changed.
"She discovered you were pregnant.""
Elena froze.
"What?""
Julian went silent.
"How?""
Vivian looked down.
"Because the doctor who confirmed your pregnancy was paid by Margaret Sterling.""
The room became ice cold.
Elena remembered.
The doctor's appointment.
The strange phone calls.
The sudden transfer of medical records.
She thought it was coincidence.
It wasn't.
"Why would they care?""
Vivian looked at the baby.
"Because your son is not just Julian's heir.""
Elena felt her heart stop.
"What are you saying?""
Vivian opened the old envelope.
She removed another document.
One she had hidden beneath the others.
"This is the reason Margaret wanted you gone.""
Elena read the first line.
Then the second.
Then she stopped.
Because the document wasn't about Julian.
It wasn't about Chloe.
It was about her.
Her own name.
Her own family.
And a secret she had never known.
Julian whispered:
"Elena...""
She looked at him.
"What?""
His face was full of shock.
"Your mother...""
May you like
A pause.
"She was a Sterling.""
