Chapter 4: The Secret That Built Sterling
Elena didn't recognize the woman's voice.
But she recognized the fear.
It was the same fear she had carried six months ago.
The fear of losing everything.
The woman stepped into the room slowly.
Nora immediately moved closer to Elena.
Protective.
Ready.
"Who are you?""
The woman looked at the phone still pressed against Elena's ear.
Then at the baby sleeping nearby.
Her eyes filled.
"My name is Vivian Hale.""
Elena waited.
The name meant nothing.
Until Julian spoke.
The second he heard it, his breathing stopped.
"Vivian?""
The woman closed her eyes.
"Hello, Julian.""
Elena looked between them.
"You know her?""
Julian didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
The woman looked older than her years.
Like someone who had spent decades carrying something too heavy.
"I never wanted you to find out this way.""
Julian's voice hardened.
"What are you doing here?""
"I came because she deserves the truth.""
"Leave.""
The command was immediate.
Cold.
Powerful.
The old Julian.
But Vivian didn't move.
"No.""
Elena had never heard anyone refuse him like that.
Not executives.
Not family members.
Not even herself.
Julian lowered his voice.
"You have no idea what you're doing.""
"I know exactly what I'm doing.""
"Then you know the consequences.""
Vivian looked at Elena.
"Yes.""
A pause.
"And I know what happens when people stay silent.""
Elena felt a chill.
"What is this about?""
Nobody answered.
She hated that.
She hated standing in the middle of conversations where everyone knew more about her life than she did.
"Someone needs to start explaining.""
Vivian nodded.
"You're right.""
She moved toward the chair beside the bed.
"Julian Sterling is not the man you think he is.""
Elena almost laughed.
"That's a dramatic thing to say after everything.""
"No.""
Vivian looked at Julian through the phone.
"You know exactly what I mean.""
Julian said nothing.
Elena watched his silence.
And something inside her shifted.
Because Julian had spent months controlling every conversation.
Every meeting.
Every headline.
But now?
He sounded trapped.
"Who is she?"" Elena asked him.
Julian answered quietly.
"Someone from my father's past.""
Vivian corrected him.
"Someone from your father's present.""
Elena looked at her.
"What does that mean?""
Vivian reached into her bag.
She pulled out an envelope.
Old.
Worn.
The paper looked like it had been opened and closed hundreds of times.
"I was your husband's father's assistant.""
Julian immediately interrupted.
"Don't.""
"I worked for Richard Sterling for twelve years.""
"Stop.""
"He promised he would protect me.""
Elena looked at Julian.
His face appeared small on the phone screen.
"You knew?""
"I didn't know she was alive.""
Vivian looked hurt.
"That is exactly what your father wanted.""
The baby began to stir.
Elena gently touched his blanket.
The tiny movement grounded her.
This was real.
Everything else was a storm.
"Why are you telling me this now?""
Vivian looked at the child.
"Because when I saw his face, I knew.""
Elena frowned.
"Knew what?""
Vivian opened the envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A newborn baby.
A hospital bracelet.
And a name.
Elena's blood ran cold.
Because the handwriting on the bracelet was unmistakable.
Sterling.
"This family has spent thirty years protecting one secret.""
Vivian placed the photograph on the table.
"And your son is the reason it can no longer stay hidden.""
Julian's voice became sharp.
"What did you do?""
Vivian looked at him.
"What I should have done years ago.""
She turned the photograph around.
Elena stared.
The baby in the picture.
The hospital.
The date.
Everything.
It couldn't be true.
Because the child in the photograph was connected to Julian's family.
But not in the way she expected.
"Julian," Elena whispered.
He didn't answer.
Because he already knew.
The truth was written across his face.
Vivian spoke softly.
"Your father had another child.""
The room went silent.
Elena looked at Julian.
"Another child?""
Vivian nodded.
"And that child is alive.""
Julian stood somewhere far away, surrounded by wedding guests, cathedral bells, and a life that was collapsing in real time.
"Who?""
Vivian looked directly at Elena.
Then said:
"The person who has been controlling everything since your divorce.""
A notification appeared on Elena's phone.
A new message.
From the same unknown number.
May you like
