Chapter 2: The Son He Never Knew
Julian Sterling had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions without blinking.
He had fired executives twice his age with a single sentence.
He had sat across from hostile investors and made them apologize for doubting him.
But hearing his ex-wife say she had given birth nearly made him forget how to breathe.
"Elena," he said again.
His voice had changed.
The arrogance was gone.
"What did you say?""
She adjusted herself against the hospital pillows.
"My son was born three hours ago.""
A sharp sound came from the other end.
A door closing.
The cathedral noise vanished.
Julian had stepped away from everyone.
For once, he was alone.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Elena stared at the question.
Not because she didn't know the answer.
Because she couldn't believe he asked.
"Are you serious?""
"I have a right to know.""
The words hit harder than she expected.
A right.
Julian loved talking about rights.
His right to the company.
His right to his family's legacy.
His right to decide who belonged beside him.
Elena looked at the small bassinet beside her bed.
Her son slept inside now.
A nurse had carefully placed him there while Elena rested.
"He was born three hours ago, Julian.""
"I understand that.""
"No. You don't.""
Her voice remained calm.
That seemed to bother him more than anger would have.
"You spent six months telling everyone I was incapable of having children.""
"I was angry.""
"You told the judge.""
"I said things I didn't mean.""
Elena laughed quietly.
It wasn't happiness.
It was disbelief.
"You don't get to erase words because they became inconvenient.""
Julian didn't answer.
For a moment, she remembered the man he used to be.
The man who brought her coffee when she worked late.
The man who danced with her barefoot in their kitchen after they won their first major charity auction.
The man who promised her that the Sterling name would never matter more than their marriage.
Then she remembered the man who sat across from her during divorce mediation.
The man who looked at her like she was a failed investment.
"Can I see him?""
The question surprised her.
She looked at the phone.
"Why?""
"Because he's my son.""
The sentence landed between them.
Elena closed her eyes.
There it was.
The truth.
The one thing neither of them could avoid.
"You don't know that.""
Julian went quiet.
"What does that mean?""
"It means you don't get to appear at the end of the story and claim the beginning.""
"Elena.""
"No.""
She looked toward the hospital door.
Nora was standing there holding two coffees.
One for herself.
One for Elena, even though Elena wasn't allowed caffeine yet.
Nora immediately noticed her expression.
She mouthed:
"Julian?""
Elena nodded.
Nora's face hardened.
Julian continued.
"Tell me where you are.""
"No.""
"I am his father.""
"You were my husband.""
The words cut through him.
"Those are different things.""
"No, Julian.""
Her voice lowered.
"They were supposed to be connected.""
For the first time, he had nothing to say.
Then another voice appeared in the background.
"Julian?""
Chloe.
Elena recognized her instantly.
Even through a phone.
Chloe's voice was soft.
Concerned.
Perfect.
"Is everything okay?""
Julian covered the phone slightly.
"One minute.""
Elena heard enough.
Chloe knew.
Of course she knew.
She always knew everything.
"Is your bride waiting?"" Elena asked.
Julian didn't respond.
"She must be nervous.""
"Elena.""
"No, really. She should enjoy today.""
She looked at her son.
"Because after today, nothing will ever be the same.""
Julian's voice became colder.
"What are you implying?""
"I'm not implying anything.""
"Then explain.""
She smiled faintly.
The old Elena would have begged him to listen.
The old Elena would have tried to make him understand.
This Elena had spent six months surviving.
"I'll send you a photograph.""
"What?""
"Of your son.""
Julian stopped breathing.
"But after that, we need to have a conversation.""
"About what?""
"About why you never knew he existed.""
The line went silent.
Then Julian asked:
"Are you saying you kept my child from me?""
Elena looked at Nora.
Her sister's expression was already angry.
"No.""
"Then why?""
"Because when I found out I was pregnant, I was sitting in a lawyer's office watching my husband destroy me.""
"You could have called.""
"I did.""
The answer came so quietly that Julian almost missed it.
"What?""
Elena swallowed.
"I called you.""
"When?""
"The night after mediation.""
Julian said nothing.
"You didn't answer.""
"I was busy.""
"Yes.""
She looked away.
"You were busy celebrating.""
That sentence made him freeze.
Because he remembered.
The night after their divorce agreement was finalized.
He and Chloe had gone to dinner.
Champagne.
Laughter.
A future they thought was guaranteed.
Meanwhile, Elena had sat alone in their old bedroom, holding a positive pregnancy test with shaking hands.
"I didn't know," Julian whispered.
"No.""
Her eyes filled, but she refused to cry.
"You didn't.""
The room on his side became chaotic again.
Someone called his name.
Someone reminded him the ceremony was starting soon.
Julian ignored them.
"Send me the picture.""
Elena hesitated.
Then she took a photograph.
Her son sleeping peacefully.
No fancy background.
No designer blanket.
No Sterling family crest.
Just a newborn child.
She sent it.
The message delivered.
Seconds later, Julian opened it.
And Elena knew the exact moment he saw him.
Because he stopped speaking.
The powerful Julian Sterling.
The man who never showed weakness.
The man who had replaced her with someone younger and easier.
The man who had thrown away their marriage like a damaged contract.
Was suddenly silent.
"He's...""
Julian's voice cracked.
Elena waited.
"He's beautiful.""
She looked at her son.
"Yes.""
A long pause.
Then Julian whispered:
"He has my eyes.""
Before Elena could respond, another notification appeared on her phone.
Not from Julian.
From an unknown number.
One sentence.
One photograph.
And a name she hadn't seen in six months.
Her blood turned cold.
May you like
Because the message said:
*You need to know the truth about Julian's first betrayal.*
