Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

Elena stared at the message until the letters stopped looking like words.

*Ask Chloe who I am.*

Four simple words.

Four words that felt heavier than the divorce papers she had signed six months earlier.

The room was silent except for the soft beeping of the monitor beside her bed.

Her son slept peacefully, completely unaware that the adults around him were standing at the edge of a disaster.

"Who is Chloe?""

Vivian looked at her.

The older woman didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation frightened Elena more than the message itself.

Because people hesitated when they were choosing how much truth to reveal.

Or when they were deciding how much damage the truth would cause.

"Vivian.""

The woman lowered her eyes.

"Chloe Mercer is not who you think she is.""

Elena almost smiled.

"That's becoming the theme of my life.""

Julian's voice came through the phone.

"Don't listen to her.""

Elena looked at the screen.

"Why?""

"Because she is manipulating you.""

Vivian shook her head.

"No. I'm finally telling you what your father spent years hiding.""

Julian's jaw tightened.

"My father is dead.""

"His choices aren't.""

That sentence silenced him.

Elena noticed.

Julian always had a response.

Always.

A clever explanation.

A carefully prepared argument.

But whenever Vivian spoke about his father, Julian became someone else.

Someone younger.

Someone afraid.

"Julian," Elena said slowly, "who is Chloe Mercer?""

"She's my wife.""

"Not yet.""

A pause.

Then:

"She was my employee.""

"Your director of public relations.""

"Yes.""

"And before that?""

Julian didn't answer.

Elena looked at Vivian.

The woman finally spoke.

"Before that, she was working for Margaret Sterling.""

The name landed heavily.

Julian's mother.

The woman who had supported the divorce.

The woman who had told Elena, during their last conversation, that some women were "not built for the pressure of legacy.""

Elena remembered those words.

She remembered the perfectly arranged flowers in Margaret's sitting room.

The calm voice.

The fake sympathy.

"You always seemed like a lovely girl, Elena," Margaret had said.

Not a woman.

A girl.

"But Julian needs someone who understands the responsibility of his position.""

At the time, Elena thought Margaret meant wealth.

Power.

Social expectations.

Now she wondered if she meant something else.

"Margaret hired Chloe?"" Elena asked.

Vivian nodded.

"Years before you knew her.""

"Why?""

Vivian looked toward Julian.

"Because your mother was preparing.""

"For what?""

Nobody answered.

The frustration burned through Elena.

She pushed herself higher against the pillows.

"Everyone keeps saying that word. Preparing. Planning.

Protecting. Hiding.""

Her voice shook.

"I am tired of being the only person in the room who doesn't know the script.""

Julian spoke quietly.

"Elena.""

"No.""

She looked at him through the phone.

"You don't get to calm me down anymore.""

The words hurt him.

She saw it.

Good.

For months, she had been the only person hurting.

"Tell me the truth.""

Julian remained silent.

So she asked again.

"Did your mother know about Chloe?""

Another pause.

"Yes.""

Elena felt something inside her crack.

Not surprise.

Something worse.

Confirmation.

"How long?""

Julian closed his eyes.

"I don't know.""

Vivian answered.

"Eight years.""

Elena froze.

Eight years.

She did the math.

Chloe had been twenty-one.

Elena had been married to Julian for five years.

Five years of dinners.

Charity events.

Family holidays.

And Chloe had been standing nearby the entire time.

Watching.

Waiting.

"What did Margaret want from her?""

Vivian looked at the baby.

"Your son.""

Elena's blood turned cold.

"What?""

"Not him specifically.""

Vivian stepped closer.

"The Sterling family has always believed blood is everything.""

Julian interrupted.

"Stop.""

But Vivian continued.

"When Richard Sterling discovered he had another child, he was terrified.""

"Why?""

"Because the Sterling inheritance wasn't as simple as everyone believed.""

Elena frowned.

"Explain.""

Vivian opened the envelope again.

She removed a document.

"Richard created a private trust before his death.""

Julian's voice sharpened.

"I know about the trust.""

"No.""

Vivian looked at him.

"You know about the version your mother wanted you to know.""

She placed the document on the table.

"The real trust has one condition.""

Elena read the first lines.

Her eyes narrowed.

"First legitimate heir?""

Vivian nodded.

"The Sterling fortune cannot transfer to Julian if there is another direct descendant.""

Silence.

The baby moved slightly.

Elena looked down.

Then back at Julian.

"You thought you were losing everything.""

Julian looked away.

The realization hit him.

Six months ago, he wasn't just divorcing her.

He was protecting his position.

But then another thought arrived.

A darker one.

"Why did Chloe marry you?""

Nobody spoke.

Elena already knew.

She just needed someone else to say it.

Vivian whispered:

"Because Chloe was never trying to become your replacement.""

Julian looked at her.

"Then what was she trying to become?""

Vivian's answer came softly.

"The woman controlling the Sterling empire.""

The room felt colder.

Elena looked at the message again.

Ask Chloe who I am.

Maybe the sender wasn't threatening her.

Maybe they were warning her.

"Who sent this?""

Vivian looked at the phone.

"I did.""

Elena stared.

"What?""

"I needed you to know before the wedding.""

Julian stood silent.

"You sent the messages?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

Vivian looked at him.

"Because Chloe is about to marry you in a cathedral full of witnesses.""

A pause.

"And because she knows something that could destroy your entire family.""

The phone suddenly buzzed.

Julian looked at his screen.

His face changed.

"What?""

Elena watched him.

"What happened?""

He didn't answer.

"Julian.""

Slowly, he lifted his eyes.

"The ceremony...""

His voice was barely audible.

"It's already started.""

Elena frowned.

"What?""

Julian looked toward the cathedral.

Toward the life he had been so proud to display.

Then he whispered:

"Chloe walked down the aisle.""

May you like

A pause.

"And she wasn't alone.""
