Chapter 9: The Final Letter
The room became silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
I stared at Lucas.
“What did you just say?””
He looked at me.
“Your father’s death wasn’t an accident.””
The words felt impossible.
My father died from a heart attack.
That was what everyone told me.
That was what I believed.
“That’s a lie.””
Lucas shook his head.
“I wish it was.””
I looked at Thomas.
He wouldn’t meet my eyes.
And that terrified me more than anything.
“Thomas.””
The old attorney looked down.
“Tell me.””
He stayed silent.
“Tell me the truth.””
Finally, he spoke.
“Your father was investigating Marcus Vale.””
My heart pounded.
“For what?””
“Fraud. Theft. Illegal business dealings.””
I looked at Lucas.
“And you?””
Lucas’s expression changed.
“I was trying to get away from my father.””
“Then why did you disappear?””
He looked at Noah.
“Because Marcus found out about him.””
I held Noah closer.
“What does that mean?””
Lucas’s voice became quieter.
“He knew Noah existed.””
A chill ran through me.
“He wanted my son?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Lucas looked at Evelyn.
“Because Noah was the last piece of the inheritance.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Thomas opened another file.
Inside were pages of legal documents.
“Your father created the trust because he knew Marcus wanted control of the mansion.””
“But why Noah?””
Lucas answered.
“Because Marcus believed the property belonged to the Vale family.””
I looked confused.
“Why?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
And then she finally admitted it.
“Because Marcus was my brother.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
Evelyn looked ashamed.
“I never told you.””
The truth kept coming.
Layer after layer.
Every person I trusted had been hiding something.
Thomas continued.
“Marcus believed Richard stole everything from their family.””
“He didn’t.””
“No,” Thomas said.
“But Marcus believed he did.””
Lucas stepped forward.
“My father became obsessed.””
“And you helped him?””
Lucas looked hurt.
“I was trying to stop him.””
I wanted to believe him.
But trust was something I had run out of.
Then Thomas handed me another letter.
“This was the final one.””
I recognized my father’s handwriting.
But this time, my hands didn’t shake.
I opened it.
My daughter,
If you are reading this, then the people I feared have finally revealed themselves.
I swallowed.
I kept Noah’s truth hidden because I knew they would use him as a weapon.
He is not a mistake.
He is not a bargaining chip.
He is my grandson.
And he is the person I trust most.
My eyes filled with tears.
The letter continued.
The mansion is not valuable because of the land.
It is valuable because beneath it lies the evidence of everything Marcus Vale did.
I looked at the hidden room.
The files.
The documents.
The proof.
Then I read the final lines.
But there is one thing I need you to know.
The person who betrayed me was not Marcus.
My breath stopped.
The person who betrayed me was someone closer.
Someone I invited into my home.
Someone I thought I could trust.
I slowly lowered the letter.
Everyone watched me.
“Who?””
Nobody spoke.
Then the hidden room door behind us suddenly locked.
A loud click echoed.
The lights flickered.
And a voice came from the speaker system above.
A voice I recognized.
A voice that made Daniel turn pale.
“Hello, Emma.””
I froze.
Because it wasn’t Lucas.
It wasn’t Evelyn.
It wasn’t Thomas.
It was someone else.
Someone who had been standing beside me the entire time.
The voice continued.
“I think it’s time you learned what your husband really did.””
I turned toward Daniel.
His face had lost all color.

And for the first time…
he looked afraid of himself.
