Chapter 4: The Bloodline Secret
The words on the paper blurred.
*DNA TEST RESULTS.*
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
I stared at the document sitting inside the wooden box, waiting for someone to tell me this was a cruel joke.
A trick.
Another game Evelyn was playing.
But she wasn’t smiling.
That was what frightened me.
Evelyn Whitmore loved winning.
She loved watching people lose their confidence.
She loved being the person with the most power in the room.
But now?
She looked like someone who had been carrying a secret for too long.
“What is this?”” I whispered.
Daniel took one step forward.
“Don’t.””
I looked at him.
“Don’t what?””
His face was pale.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Evelyn laughed softly.
“Of course he would say that.””
She walked toward the table and placed her hand on the document.
“Because if you know the truth, everything changes.””
I looked between them.
“What truth?””
Nobody answered.
The older man beside Evelyn lowered his eyes.
He looked uncomfortable.
Like he had been dragged into something he never wanted to be part of.
I picked up the paper.
My hands shook as I read.
The names at the top weren’t mine.
They weren’t Noah’s.
They were:
*Richard Hayes.*
And:
*Evelyn Whitmore.*
My father.
And my husband’s mother.
I looked up slowly.
“No.””
Evelyn said nothing.
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“My father and you?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
That reaction told me everything.
“You knew,” I whispered.
He opened his eyes.
“I found out recently.””
“Recently?””
I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“You found out your mother had a relationship with my father, and you decided not to tell me?””
“It wasn’t that simple.””
“Then explain it.””
Daniel looked helpless.
For the first time since I had known him, he didn’t have an answer ready.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Your father loved me.””
I turned toward her.
The anger I felt was almost impossible to control.
“You are telling me this now?””
“I am telling you because you need to understand why he chose you.””
I looked at the document again.
The numbers.
The signatures.
The proof.
“My father never mentioned you.””
Evelyn’s expression changed.
A flash of pain crossed her face.
“Because he was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
She looked toward Daniel.
“Afraid of what would happen if the truth came out.””
I shook my head.
“No. You don’t get to stand there and act like the victim.””
Evelyn’s jaw tightened.
“You think I wanted this?””
“I think you wanted this mansion.””
Her eyes hardened.
“There it is.””
“What?””
“You still don’t understand.””
She pointed toward the walls.
“This house was never just a house.””
I said nothing.
She continued.
“Your father and I built something together.””
“My father built his company.””
“Yes.””
Her voice lowered.
“But before the company, before the money, before the mansion… there was us.””
I felt sick.
My father had always been the one person I trusted completely.
The person who held my hand when my mother died.
The person who promised me nobody would ever take advantage of me.
And now I was standing in the home he left behind, learning he had hidden an entire life from me.
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
Evelyn looked away.
“Because he chose your mother.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
My father had loved someone else.
Before my birth.
Before his family.
Before everything I knew.
But that still didn’t explain Noah.
It didn’t explain why Evelyn hurt my son.
“So what?”” I asked.
Everyone became quiet.
“You were hurt decades ago, so you punished a child?””
Evelyn’s expression hardened.
“Noah represents everything I lost.””
I stared at her.
“That’s not his fault.””
“I know.””
Her answer surprised me.
For one second, she looked human.
Then it disappeared.
“But I also know this house was supposed to be mine.””
I placed the document down.
“You are unbelievable.””
“You don’t understand inheritance.””
“No, Evelyn. You don’t understand love.””
The room went silent.
Daniel looked at me.
I continued.
“My father left this house to me because he loved me. He left it to Noah because he loved him.””
I pointed upstairs.
“He didn’t leave it to you because he knew exactly who you were.””
Evelyn’s face turned cold.
“You think you know your father.””
“Yes.””
“No, you don’t.””
She opened another envelope from the box.
And this time, she didn’t look angry.
She looked almost sorry.
“There’s more.””
I hesitated.
I didn’t want to hear anything else.
But I needed to know.
“What more?””
She handed me the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
The moment I saw it, my chest tightened.
Because I knew that handwriting.
I had seen it on birthday cards.
On notes he left beside my breakfast.
On the last letter he wrote before he passed away.
I unfolded it.
My daughter,
If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.
I stopped.
My eyes moved over the next line.
And my heart sank.
I didn’t leave the mansion to you because you are my only child.
I left it to you because you are the only person I trust to protect what matters.
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
I kept reading.
There is something hidden beneath this house. Something that must never fall into the wrong hands.
My hands became cold.
Something hidden?
I continued.
Evelyn knows about it.
And that is why you must be careful.
I slowly lowered the letter.
Everyone was watching me.
Including Daniel.
Including Evelyn.
My father’s final warning sat between us.
And suddenly I understood.
The mansion wasn’t the inheritance.
The mansion was a doorway.
May you like
And whatever my father had hidden…
was the reason Evelyn had spent years trying to control it.
