Chapter 6: The Truth My Father Buried
“Noah!””
I ran.
My son stood beside the open floor panel, frozen.
His face was pale.
His eyes were fixed on the dark staircase leading underground.
I grabbed him and pulled him into my arms.
“What are you doing here?””
He held onto me tightly.
“I followed you.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
He looked embarrassed.
“Because I thought you were leaving me too.””
Those words hurt more than anything Evelyn had done.
I held him closer.
“Noah, I would never leave you.””
He nodded against my shoulder.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I lifted his face.
“You never have to apologize for wanting to feel safe.””
Behind us, Evelyn was staring at Noah.
And something about her expression bothered me.
Not anger.
Not hatred.
Regret.
Thomas stepped toward the opening.
“We need to see what happened.””
Daniel moved closer.
“Is it safe?””
Thomas looked at the dark staircase.
“Your father designed this room.””
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
“It means he trusted the person who opened it.””
Everyone looked at Noah.
I frowned.
“What?””
Thomas pointed to the floor panel.
“There’s a fingerprint scanner.””
I looked down.
I hadn’t noticed it before.
A small glass circle beside the hidden door.
“The door only opens for approved people.””
Daniel looked confused.
“But Noah is six.””
Thomas nodded.
“Exactly.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“My father added him.””
Thomas looked at me.
“Your father believed Noah would be the one who protected his legacy.””
I looked at my son.
A child who had been forced onto the floor hours earlier.
A child they underestimated.
And now he had opened something they couldn’t.
Evelyn stepped back.
“This isn’t possible.””
Thomas looked at her.
“It is.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“Richard would never choose him.””
I turned.
“Why not?””
She didn’t answer.
But I already knew.
Because in her mind, Noah wasn’t a Whitmore.
He was an outsider.
And that was why she had never seen his worth.
We descended the staircase slowly.
The room beneath the mansion was nothing like I expected.
It wasn’t filled with gold.
It wasn’t a secret vault.
It was an archive.
Shelves lined the walls.
Hundreds of files.
Photographs.
Documents.
Records.
My father had hidden his entire history here.
Thomas walked to a desk.
“This room contains everything your father wanted preserved.””
I picked up a file.
The label made my stomach tighten.
*Whitmore Family Trust Investigation.*
“What is this?””
Thomas became quiet.
“Your father discovered something.””
“What?””
He looked at Evelyn.
And this time, she didn’t look powerful.
She looked terrified.
“Your family wasn’t the only one interested in the mansion.””
I opened the file.
Inside were documents showing financial records.
Transfers.
Names.
Dates.
Then I saw one name repeated over and over.
Evelyn Whitmore.
I looked up.
“What did she do?””
Nobody answered.
I turned another page.
And there it was.
A signed agreement.
A secret agreement.
Between Evelyn and someone named Marcus Vale.
The date was twenty years earlier.
The same year my father purchased the mansion.
“What is this?””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Give me that.””
I pulled it away.
“No.””
Her voice became sharper.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at Daniel.
“Tell her.””
Daniel froze.
I stared at him.
“You knew about this too?””
“No.””
But he looked afraid.
Thomas took the document from my hand and read it carefully.
Then his expression changed.
“This is worse than I thought.””
“What is it?””
He looked at me.
“Your father didn’t leave you the mansion because he wanted to reward you.””
A chill moved through me.
“Then why?””
Thomas looked toward Noah.
“Because he was protecting you.””
The room became silent.
“From what?””
Thomas opened another file.
Inside was a photograph.
A man standing beside Evelyn.
A man I recognized.
Not because I knew him.
Because I had seen his name before.
Marcus Vale.
The man who had tried to buy my father’s company before he died.
Thomas placed the picture on the table.
“Your father discovered Evelyn was helping him.””
I stared at the photo.
“No.””
Evelyn’s eyes filled with anger.
“You don’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell me.””
She stepped forward.
For the first time, her voice wasn’t arrogant.
It was broken.
“Your father destroyed my life.””
I shook my head.
“No. You hurt my son.””
Her expression changed.
And then she said something that made the entire room go silent.
“Because your son was never supposed to inherit this house.””
I stared at her.
“What did you say?””
Evelyn looked at Noah.
Then at me.
“The trust was changed after your father discovered the truth.””
My heart pounded.
“What truth?””
She whispered:
“The truth about who Noah’s father really is.””
I couldn’t move.
Daniel went completely still.
Thomas dropped the file in his hand.
And Noah looked up at me, confused.
“Mommy?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because the question I had never imagined asking suddenly appeared in my mind.
Why had my father protected Noah so fiercely?
Why had he changed everything?
And why did Evelyn look at my son like she knew something I didn’t?
Then my phone rang.
A new message appeared.
From an unknown number.
*You finally found the room.*
May you like
A second message arrived.
*Now ask Daniel who Noah’s real father is.*
