Chapter 3: The Secret Inside The Mansion
I spent the entire night staring at that message.
The words stayed on my screen like a warning.
*If you want to know why Daniel married you, you need to come back alone.*
I hated that it worked.
I hated that a stranger could still pull me back toward the place where my son had been hurt.
But there was one name that kept appearing in my mind.
Daniel.
Why had he known about the inheritance?
Why had he hidden it?
And why did Evelyn seem terrified when I opened those documents?
The next morning, I sat at my kitchen table while Noah ate cereal.
He was quiet.
Too quiet.
Normally, he would tell me stories about his toys or ask a hundred questions before breakfast.
That morning, he just moved his spoon around the bowl.
“Hey,” I said softly.
He looked up.
“Are you mad at me?””
My heart broke.
“What?””
“Because Grandma got angry.””
I immediately moved beside him.
“Noah, look at me.””
He lifted his eyes.
“You did nothing wrong.””
“But she said I didn’t belong.””
I held his little hands.
“Listen to me. Nobody gets to decide whether you belong. Not her. Not anyone.””
He nodded.
But I could tell he was still carrying the weight of those words.
Later that afternoon, I drove back to the mansion.
Alone.
I hated admitting it, but I needed answers.
The gates opened before I even pressed the intercom.
That bothered me.
Someone was expecting me.
When I stepped inside, the mansion looked different.
Not because anything had changed.
Because now I could see it clearly.
The beautiful walls.
The expensive paintings.
The perfect decorations.
All of it had been hiding something ugly.
“Evelyn?””
My voice echoed through the hallway.
No answer.
I walked toward the dining room.
The table had been cleaned.
The broken plates were gone.
The wine stain had disappeared.
But I could still see Noah on the floor.
I would never forget that.
“You came back.””
I turned.
Daniel stood behind me.
I froze.
“I told you I didn’t want to talk privately.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you here?””
His face looked exhausted.
For once, he didn’t look like the confident man everyone admired.
He looked guilty.
“I need to explain.””
I crossed my arms.
“Start.””
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
“My mother wasn’t supposed to lose this house.””
I stared at him.
“That’s your explanation?””
“No. But you need to understand.””
“Understand what?””
He took a breath.
“When your father changed the inheritance, my mother found out.””
“And?””
“And she was furious.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So she bullied a child?””
Daniel flinched.
“Yes.””
That answer surprised me.
At least he finally admitted it.
“I thought she would pressure you,” he continued.
“I thought she would try to convince you to sell.””
“But?””
“But I never thought she would hurt Noah.””
I looked at him.
“You keep saying you never thought.””
My voice became quieter.
“But you never say you stopped it.””
Daniel had no answer.
A sound came from upstairs.
A door closing.
We both looked up.
“Who’s here?”” I asked.
Daniel’s expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“No one.””
“Daniel.””
Before he could answer, Evelyn appeared at the top of the staircase.
And she wasn’t alone.
Beside her was an older man holding a locked wooden box.
I had never seen him before.
Evelyn slowly walked down.
“You shouldn’t have come back.””
I looked at the box.
“What is that?””
She smiled.
“The reason your father chose you.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What are you talking about?””
The older man placed the box on the table.
Daniel whispered:
“Mom…”
But Evelyn ignored him.
She looked directly at me.
“You think your father left you this mansion because he trusted you?””
I felt a chill.
“Then why?””
She opened the box.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of my father.
And standing beside him…
was Evelyn.
But that wasn’t the shocking part.
The shocking part was the date written on the back.
It was taken three years before I was born.
Evelyn pushed the photograph toward me.
Then she said the one thing I never expected to hear.
“Your father and I had a secret.””
I stared at the picture.
Unable to breathe.
Because beneath the photograph was another document.

And at the top were the words:
