Chapter 5: The Room Beneath The House

I read my father’s letter three more times.

Every word felt heavier than the one before.

Something hidden beneath the house.

Something Evelyn knew about.

Something my father believed was dangerous.

I looked at the mansion around me.

The walls.

The floors.

The rooms I had walked through countless times.

How could something so important exist right beneath my feet without me knowing?

“Where is it?”” I asked.

Evelyn didn’t answer.

“Where is what my father hid?””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom.””

She ignored him.

“You really think I’m going to tell you?””

I folded the letter.

“You already told me enough.””

A small smile appeared on her face.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you just admitted you know something.””

Her smile faded.

For the first time, I saw frustration on her face.

She hated that I was no longer the woman she could manipulate.

I wasn’t the new wife who wanted approval.

I wasn’t the daughter who blindly trusted her father’s memories.

I was Noah’s mother.

And that changed everything.

The older man cleared his throat.

“Mrs. Hayes…”

I looked at him.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Thomas Bell.””

“Why are you here?””

He glanced at Evelyn.

“I was your father’s attorney.””

That surprised me.

“My father’s attorney?””

He nodded.

“For thirty years.””

“Then why have I never met you?””

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

“Because Richard specifically instructed me to stay away until the conditions of the trust were triggered.””

“What conditions?””

He looked at the letter in my hand.

“When someone tried to challenge Noah’s ownership.””

I froze.

“Meaning?””

Thomas looked directly at Evelyn.

“Meaning this moment.””

Silence filled the room.

Evelyn’s face changed.

“You knew?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your father planned for this.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Planned for what?””

Thomas opened his briefcase.

“For the possibility that someone would attempt to take the mansion away from his descendants.””

My stomach tightened.

Descendants.

Not daughter.

Not family.

Descendants.

Noah.

Thomas removed a second folder.

“The trust has several protections.””

He placed it on the table.

“The property cannot be sold without Noah’s approval once he reaches adulthood.””

Evelyn stared at him.

“And until then?””

“His mother is the legal guardian of his inheritance.””

I looked at Evelyn.

Her expression was terrifying.

Not because she was angry.

Because she was defeated.

“You arranged this,” she whispered.

Thomas shook his head.

“Your former relationship with Mr. Hayes was never mentioned in the trust.””

“Former?””

Evelyn’s face tightened.

“He promised me—”

Thomas interrupted.

“Mr. Hayes made his decision.””

The room became quiet.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked devastated.

Not because of me.

Because he was watching his mother lose control.

And that hurt more than I expected.

I had spent years wondering if Daniel loved me.

Now I wondered if he had ever truly seen me.

“Why did you marry me?”” I asked.

The question came out before I could stop it.

Daniel looked at me.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

His face changed.

“Because I loved you.””

I stared at him.

“Did you know who my father was when we met?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That pause destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

“Yes.””

The word was quiet.

But it shattered everything.

I stepped back.

“No.””

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He looked down.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You married me knowing my father’s history with your mother.””

“No.””

“You knew this house existed.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Noah inherited it.””

“Yes.””

“And you still let your mother treat him like he was nothing.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You thought?””

My voice rose.

“You thought you could fix someone who was willing to hurt a child?””

He had nothing to say.

Because there was nothing to say.

I turned away.

That was when I noticed something.

A small mark on the wooden floor near the fireplace.

A symbol.

The same symbol from my father’s letter.

My heart stopped.

I walked closer.

Thomas followed my eyes.

“You found it.””

I touched the carving.

“What is this?””

Thomas looked serious.

“The entrance.””

Evelyn suddenly moved.

“Don’t.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice was sharp.

Desperate.

“Don’t open that.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

For the first time, Evelyn looked afraid of me.

“Because once you see what’s inside…”

She stopped.

“What?””

Her lips parted.

But before she could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The mansion fell into darkness.

No one moved.

Then came a sound.

A quiet mechanical click.

From beneath the floor.

Thomas whispered:

“Someone already opened it.””

My blood ran cold.

Because when the emergency lights turned on…

the hidden door was open.

May you like

And the person standing beside it…

was Noah.
