Chapter 8: The Man Who Came Back

For years, I had wondered what happened to Lucas.

I wondered why the man who promised he would always be there disappeared the moment I told him I was pregnant.

I wondered why his phone stopped working.

Why his apartment was empty.

Why every person connected to him suddenly acted like they had never heard his name.

I was twenty-four years old when Noah was born.

Young.

Scared.

And alone.

My father had been the only person who stayed.

He never asked questions.

He never judged me.

He simply held my newborn son and said:

“He is family.””

Now I understood.

He knew.

He knew exactly who Lucas was.

And he knew what kind of danger followed him.

I looked at Daniel.

“Did you know about Lucas?””

Daniel looked broken.

“Yes.””

The answer barely left his mouth.

I turned away.

“How much?””

“Enough.””

“Enough for what?””

“Enough to know he was dangerous.””

I laughed bitterly.

“And you said nothing.””

“I was afraid.””

I stared at him.

“Of what?””

“Of losing you.””

I shook my head.

“You lost me when you chose silence.””

A loud crash came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Thomas looked toward the staircase.

“That wasn’t us.””

The mansion suddenly felt unfamiliar.

Like someone else was inside.

Evelyn moved toward the stairs.

“Impossible.””

“What?””

She didn’t answer.

Then the front door opened.

A voice echoed through the mansion.

“I guess secrets don’t stay buried forever.””

My entire body went still.

I knew that voice.

I had spent years trying to forget it.

Lucas Vale walked into the room.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakable.

Noah’s father.

He looked at me.

Then smiled.

“Hello, Emma.””

I couldn’t speak.

Daniel moved in front of me.

Lucas laughed.

“Still pretending to be the hero?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Leave.””

Lucas ignored him.

His eyes moved to Noah.

And the second he looked at my son, every protective instinct inside me woke up.

“Don’t.””

My voice stopped him.

Lucas looked at me.

“You still don’t trust me.””

“You disappeared.””

“I had reasons.””

“You abandoned your child.””

His expression changed.

For a moment, something like guilt appeared.

Then it vanished.

“You don’t know the whole story.””

“I know enough.””

Lucas stepped closer.

“No, Emma. You know what your father wanted you to believe.””

I felt my anger rise.

“Don’t talk about my father.””

“Why?””

He smiled.

“Because he was the reason we were separated.””

I froze.

“What?””

Lucas looked around the mansion.

“At first, I thought Marcus was right about him.””

Thomas immediately reacted.

“Careful.””

Lucas ignored him.

“But then I discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

He looked at Evelyn.

The two of them stared at each other.

And I knew.

They had history.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Evelyn looked away.

“You knew Lucas.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

No answer.

Lucas laughed softly.

“Because your husband’s mother was never just trying to take the mansion.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Lucas looked at him.

“Still protecting them?””

“Leave.””

Lucas smiled.

“Ask him why he married you.””

I felt exhausted.

“I already know he hid things.””

“No.””

Lucas shook his head.

“You don’t.””

He reached into his coat.

Pulled out a document.

And placed it on the table.

“Daniel didn’t marry you because of love.””

My eyes moved to Daniel.

He looked terrified.

Lucas continued.

“He married you because your father made him an offer.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

Daniel didn’t speak.

That was all the answer I needed.

My chest tightened.

“What offer?””

Lucas smiled.

“Your father promised Daniel one thing.””

He pushed the document toward me.

“Marry Emma. Protect Noah. Keep him away from me.””

I stared at the paper.

My hands shook as I opened it.

There was Daniel’s signature.

A date.

A contract.

A secret agreement.

I looked up slowly.

“Was any part of our marriage real?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

But I couldn’t believe him anymore.

Lucas stepped closer.

“And now that the truth is out, you should know something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His expression became serious.

“Your father didn’t just leave you the mansion.””

A pause.

“He left you proof that Marcus Vale committed a crime.””

Thomas went pale.

“No.””

Lucas nodded.

“Yes.””

He looked at Evelyn.

“And she helped him.””

Evelyn suddenly shouted:

“Stop!””

Everyone turned.

For the first time, she looked truly afraid.

Lucas smiled.

“Why?””

“Because if she finds out what happened that night…”

May you like

He looked at me.

“…she’ll know why her father died.””
