Chapter 9: The Truth Nobody Was Supposed to Hear

Margaret Lewis stood at the bottom of the staircase with Noah in her arms.

Sarah stared at her.

For several seconds, she couldn't speak.

Then she rushed down the stairs.

"My baby.""

Margaret carefully placed the carrier on the floor.

Sarah dropped to her knees and lifted Noah into her arms.

The little boy stirred.

He opened his eyes.

Sarah pressed her face against his forehead and began crying.

"I'm here, sweetheart. Mommy's here.""

Michael stood frozen.

He had imagined this moment countless times.

He had imagined finding Sarah.

He had imagined holding his son.

But he hadn't imagined discovering that the people he had trusted had built an entire world of lies around his family.

Sarah finally looked up.

Her eyes found Michael's.

"Come here.""

He approached slowly.

"Sarah...""

She reached for his hand.

"I'm sorry.""

Michael shook his head.

"Don't apologize.""

"I tried to get to you.""

"I know.""

"They told me you were dead.""

Michael stared at her.

"What?""

Sarah nodded.

"Dr. Reed told me that you had died in prison. He said you had been attacked while awaiting trial.""

Michael looked horrified.

"Why would he tell you that?""

"Because he wanted me to stop asking questions. He said if I cooperated, they would let me see Emily.""

Michael's eyes filled.

"Did you believe him?""

Sarah looked down at Noah.

"At first.""

Daniel approached carefully.

"Sarah, we need to understand what happened.""

She nodded.

"I'll tell you everything.""

Victoria suddenly spoke from the doorway.

"Don't.""

Sarah turned.

"Don't what?""

"Don't destroy this family.""

Sarah laughed bitterly.

"Which family, Mom? The one where you stole from my daughter? The one where you helped Jason hide my son? Or the one where you watched me disappear while my husband was accused of murder?""

Victoria's face crumpled.

"I was trying to protect you.""

"You were protecting yourself.""

"No!""

Sarah held Noah closer.

"You knew I was alive. You knew Michael was innocent. You knew Emily was growing up believing her father had murdered her mother.""

Victoria began crying.

"I didn't know what else to do.""

Sarah stared at her.

"You could have told the truth.""

Victoria lowered her eyes.

Margaret stepped forward.

"Sarah, there's something else.""

Sarah turned.

"What?""

Margaret looked at Daniel.

"Dr. Reed falsified the birth records. But he didn't do it alone.""

Daniel nodded.

"We know Victoria and Jason were involved.""

Margaret shook her head.

"Not just them.""

She looked at Sarah.

"Your father had another son before Jason.""

Sarah went pale.

"What?""

Margaret continued.

"Years ago, your father had a relationship with a nurse at the hospital. She became pregnant, and he arranged for the child to be raised under another name.""

Daniel looked toward Victoria.

"Is that why you said Jason wasn't the only child?""

Victoria nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

Michael stared.

"Who was the other son?""

Margaret looked down.

Then she said:

"Dr. Samuel Reed.""

The room fell silent.

Sarah's eyes widened.

"No.""

Margaret nodded.

"Your father was his biological father.""

Daniel slowly sat down.

"That means Reed was your half-brother.""

Sarah looked as though she might collapse.

"But why would he help Jason?""

Margaret glanced at Victoria.

"Because the money was supposed to be divided three ways.""

Daniel opened his folder.

"Three ways?""

Margaret nodded.

"Your father had created a secret inheritance arrangement. Sarah was supposed to receive the majority of his estate. Jason was supposed to receive a smaller portion.

Dr. Reed was promised money in exchange for keeping his parentage hidden.""

Sarah shook her head.

"That doesn't explain why they tried to kill me.""

Margaret looked toward the photographs in the secret room.

"Because your father changed his will shortly before he died.""

Daniel opened the document.

"Do you know what he changed?""

Margaret nodded.

"He removed Jason and Dr. Reed from the inheritance entirely. He discovered they had been stealing from his businesses.""

Sarah closed her eyes.

"That's why the transfers started.""

"Yes," Margaret replied.

"And when your father died, Victoria helped them access the accounts.""

Michael looked at Victoria.

"You were his wife. You had everything.""

Victoria shook her head.

"He was going to leave me with nothing.""

Sarah stared.

"You stole from Emily because you wanted more money?""

Victoria's voice cracked.

"I had spent thirty years taking care of that family!""

Sarah's expression hardened.

"Emily was a child.""

"I know!""

"You stole from a child.""

Victoria covered her face.

Daniel stood.

"Mrs. Victoria, I suggest you stop speaking without your attorney.""

But Victoria seemed unable to stop.

"You don't understand what Jason was capable of. He said he would expose everything. He said if I didn't help him, he'd tell everyone about the money.""

Sarah stared at her mother.

"So you helped him attack me?""

Victoria shook her head.

"I only wanted you frightened.""

"Then why did you tell the hospital I was dead?""

"I didn't know what Jason and Reed would do!""

"You watched them take me away!""

Victoria broke down.

"I thought you would recover.""

Sarah's voice became quiet.

"You left me in a room without my children.""

Nobody moved.

Margaret stepped closer.

"I tried to help. I was the one who brought Sarah food when Dr. Reed refused to let the nurses near her.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Why did you take the risk?""

Margaret looked at Sarah.

"Because I had a daughter once.""

Her voice trembled.

"She died in that hospital. Dr. Reed made a mistake during surgery, and the hospital covered it up.

I knew what he was capable of. I couldn't let him do the same thing to another family.""

Sarah reached for her hand.

"You saved my life.""

Margaret shook her head.

"I only helped you survive.""

Michael looked at Daniel.

"Where is Jason?""

Daniel checked his phone.

"We've issued a warrant.""

"And Reed?""

"Same.""

A police officer entered the room.

"Detective Harris is on the phone.""

Daniel answered.

"What's happening?""

Harris spoke quickly.

"We located Dr. Reed.""

"Where?""

"At the private airfield.""

Daniel frowned.

"What's he doing there?""

"Preparing to leave the country.""

Michael looked at Sarah.

"He's running.""

Harris continued.

"There's another problem. Jason is with him.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Can you stop them?""

"We're trying. But there's something you need to know.""

"What?""

"Jason has a hostage.""

Michael felt his stomach tighten.

"Who?""

Harris hesitated.

"Your daughter.""

The room seemed to collapse around Michael.

Sarah screamed.

"Emily?""

Daniel grabbed the phone.

"Where is she?""

Harris replied:

"At the airfield. We believe Jason took her from the safe house.""

Michael ran toward the door.

Sarah followed.

"Michael!""

He turned.

"Stay with Noah.""

"I'm coming.""

"You just got him back!""

"And Emily is my daughter too!""

Michael looked at her.

For a moment, they stood face to face.

Then he nodded.

"Let's go.""

The drive to the airfield took twenty minutes.

Nobody spoke.

Michael gripped the steering wheel while Sarah held Noah in the back seat.

Daniel followed in another vehicle with two detectives.

When they arrived, police cars were already blocking the main entrance.

A small private jet sat on the runway.

Jason stood beside it.

He held Emily's hand.

The little girl was crying.

"Uncle Jason, I want my daddy.""

Jason looked toward the approaching officers.

"Nobody move!""

Michael stepped out of the car.

"Jason!""

Jason turned.

"Stay back!""

Michael raised both hands.

"Let her go.""

Jason laughed.

"You really think you can walk away from this?""

"She's seven years old.""

"She's the reason everything went wrong.""

Michael froze.

Sarah stepped out behind him.

"Jason!""

Jason's face changed when he saw her.

For a moment, he looked genuinely shocked.

Then his expression hardened.

"You should have stayed dead.""

Sarah took one step forward.

"Give me my daughter.""

Jason tightened his grip on Emily's hand.

"You have no idea what you destroyed.""

Sarah shook her head.

"You destroyed this family.""

Jason pointed toward Michael.

"He was supposed to take the blame. That was the plan.""

Michael stared.

"What plan?""

Jason smiled.

"Your car. Your fingerprints. Your arguments with Sarah. Everything was arranged to make you look guilty.""

Daniel approached carefully.

"Jason, put the child down.""

Jason ignored him.

"Victoria was supposed to keep quiet. Reed was supposed to make the paperwork disappear. And you, Michael, were supposed to spend the rest of your life in prison.""

Michael's voice was steady.

"Why?""

Jason looked toward Sarah.

"Because your father gave her everything.""

Sarah stared.

"You stole millions from Emily.""

"That money was supposed to be mine!""

"You weren't entitled to it.""

Jason's face twisted.

"I was his son!""

"And I was his daughter.""

"Exactly!""

Jason pointed toward the jet.

"Do you know what it's like to spend your entire life watching someone else get everything?""

Sarah shook her head.

"So you tried to kill me?""

Jason laughed bitterly.

"I only wanted the documents.""

"Then why did you push me?""

His expression changed.

"Because you wouldn't let go.""

Michael took a step forward.

"Did you leave her to die?""

Jason looked at him.

"I thought she was dead.""

Sarah's voice trembled.

"But I wasn't.""

Jason turned away.

For a moment, his grip loosened.

Emily pulled her hand free.

"Daddy!""

She ran.

Michael rushed forward and caught her.

He held her against his chest as police officers surrounded Jason.

But Jason wasn't finished.

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small black device.

Daniel shouted.

"Don't touch it!""

Jason smiled.

"There's one more thing you should know.""

He pressed a button.

A recording began playing through the jet's external speakers.

It was a man's voice.

An older man.

And Sarah recognized it immediately.

Her father's voice.

"If anything happens to me, the person responsible is...""

The recording stopped.

Jason looked directly at Sarah.

"Your father knew what was coming. He recorded everything.""

Sarah stepped forward.

"Where did you get that?""

Jason smiled.

"From the man who killed him.""

Daniel stared.

"Who?""

Jason looked toward Victoria, who had just arrived with police officers.

Then he pointed at her.

"Ask your mother.""

Victoria collapsed onto a nearby bench.

Sarah stared at her.

"Mom?""

Victoria shook her head.

"No.""

Jason laughed.

"Tell her.""

Victoria began crying.

Then she whispered the words that made Sarah's world fall apart.

"I didn't kill your father, Sarah.""

She looked toward Michael.

"I killed the man who helped him hide the truth.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who was that?""

Victoria closed her eyes.

"Your father's attorney.""

Sarah's voice became a whisper.

"What?""

Victoria looked at her daughter.

"He wasn't just an attorney. He was your father's biological brother.""

Daniel slowly lowered his phone.

"That means...""

Victoria nodded.

"He was the person who changed the will.""

Sarah stared.

"Who was he?""

Victoria's answer came quietly.

"Daniel Brooks.""

The airfield fell silent.

Michael turned toward his attorney.

Daniel stood completely still.

And then, for the first time since the trial began, he said something nobody expected.

"That's right.""

May you like

He looked at Sarah.

"Your father was my brother.""
