Chapter 8: The Child They Tried to Erase

Michael didn't sleep that night.
He sat at the kitchen table with Sarah's photograph in front of him.
The image showed his wife holding a baby boy.
Her face was thinner than he remembered, and there was a faint scar near her temple.
But she was alive.
There was no question.
He had spent eleven months believing he had lost her forever.
Now he was looking at proof that she had survived.
And that she had given birth to another child.
Daniel arrived just after six in the morning.
He found Michael staring at the photograph.
"Any news?""
Michael pushed it toward him.
"Look.""
Daniel studied the image.
"Where did you get this?""
"Emily's backpack.""
Daniel turned the photograph over.
There was a hospital stamp on the back.
Riverside Recovery Center.
And beneath it, a date.
April 22.
He checked the calendar.
"Sarah was alive five months after the night she supposedly died.""
Michael nodded.
"Who is Noah?""
Daniel sat down.
"That's what we're going to find out.""
Michael rubbed his eyes.
"Sarah was pregnant. Nobody told me. Then they moved her to a private facility and apparently took her child.""
"We don't know that the baby was taken.""
"Then where is he?""
Daniel opened his laptop.
"I'm checking the company records now.""
He searched Westbridge Holdings.
The company had been registered seven years earlier.
Its listed directors were Victoria Carter and an unknown business partner.
But the financial records revealed something more disturbing.
A monthly payment had been made to a private pediatric clinic.
The payments began six months after Sarah's death.
They continued for almost a year.
Michael leaned forward.
"Who received them?""
Daniel enlarged the document.
"Northwood Children's Clinic.""
"Where is that?""
"About forty miles from here.""
Michael stood.
"Let's go.""
Daniel closed his laptop.
"Not without the police.""
Michael looked at him.
"Daniel, that could be my son.""
"I understand. But if Victoria knows we've found the photograph, she'll move him.""
Michael stared at the table.
Then he picked up his phone.
"Call Harris.""
Detective Harris met them outside Northwood Children's Clinic.
The building looked ordinary.
White walls.
Blue windows.
A small playground beside the entrance.
Parents carried toddlers through the glass doors while nurses moved between rooms.
Daniel approached the receptionist.
"We're looking for records related to a child named Noah Carter.""
The receptionist typed something into her computer.
Then she stopped.
"Do you have authorization?""
Harris showed his badge.
"We're conducting an investigation.""
The receptionist's expression changed.
"Please wait.""
She disappeared through a staff door.
Five minutes later, a middle-aged doctor entered the lobby.
"Detective Harris? I'm Dr. Elaine Porter.""
Harris shook her hand.
"We're looking for a child who may have been treated here under the name Noah Carter.""
Dr. Porter looked toward Michael.
"Are you the father?""
Michael nodded.
"Yes.""
She hesitated.
"I can't disclose patient information without proper authorization.""
Daniel placed the photograph on the desk.
"Is this the child?""
Dr. Porter looked down.
Her face changed.
"Where did you get this?""
Michael stepped forward.
"That's my wife. And that's my son.""
Dr. Porter slowly lowered herself into a chair.
"Mr. Carter, I think you should sit down.""
Michael's heart began pounding.
"Why?""
She looked toward Detective Harris.
"Because the boy was brought here under a different name.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"What name?""
"Oliver Reed.""
Michael frowned.
"Reed?""
Dr. Porter nodded.
"Dr. Samuel Reed registered him as his nephew.""
Harris exchanged a glance with Daniel.
"Is the child still here?""
"No. He was transferred three weeks ago.""
Michael gripped the counter.
"Where?""
Dr. Porter looked uncomfortable.
"To a private residence.""
"Whose residence?""
She hesitated.
"Mrs. Victoria Carter's.""
Michael felt as though someone had punched him.
"Victoria has my son?""
Dr. Porter lowered her voice.
"She has been listed as his legal guardian since he arrived.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Who signed the guardianship documents?""
"Dr. Reed.""
"Was the biological mother listed?""
Dr. Porter shook her head.
"No. The paperwork stated that the mother was deceased.""
Michael closed his eyes.
"They declared Sarah dead before she even arrived at the hospital.""
Dr. Porter nodded.
"I never believed the paperwork was correct. The dates were inconsistent, and the child had no birth certificate from a recognized hospital.""
Daniel placed another document on the desk.
"Do you have the original admission records?""
Dr. Porter looked at the papers.
Then she nodded.
"I kept copies.""
She disappeared into her office and returned with a thick folder.
Inside were medical reports, vaccination records, and a photograph.
Michael stared at it.
A baby boy with dark hair.
A small dimple on his left cheek.
Sarah's dimple.
He touched the picture.
"That's him.""
Daniel examined the file.
"Was the child healthy?""
"Yes. But there was something unusual about his admission.""
"What?""
"The boy arrived with a woman who claimed to be his grandmother. She was listed as Victoria Carter.""
Michael swallowed.
"Did she say anything about Sarah?""
Dr. Porter looked at him.
"She said the mother had died during childbirth.""
"That's a lie.""
"I suspected that.""
"Did you ever see the mother?""
Dr. Porter hesitated.
Then she opened a drawer and removed a small envelope.
"I received this anonymously about four months ago.""
Daniel opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Sarah standing outside the clinic.
She was wearing a dark coat.
Her face was partially hidden beneath a scarf.
But it was unmistakably her.
Michael took a step back.
"She came here?""
Dr. Porter nodded.
"Yes. She asked to see the child.""
"Did you let her?""
"I tried. But Dr. Reed called and instructed us not to allow her near him.""
Michael's voice cracked.
"Why?""
"Because he claimed she was dangerous.""
Daniel looked at the photograph.
"Did Sarah leave anything?""
Dr. Porter pointed to the envelope.
"She wrote a message.""
Daniel unfolded it.
Please tell my son that his mother never abandoned him.
Michael covered his mouth.
A tear rolled down his cheek.
Sarah had been close enough to see their child.
She had been fighting to reach him.
And someone had kept her away.
"Where is she now?"" Michael asked.
Dr. Porter shook her head.
"I don't know.""
Daniel checked the clinic records again.
"Who signed the transfer order three weeks ago?""
Dr. Porter turned a page.
"Victoria Carter.""
"To where?""
The doctor looked toward the door.
"Her private residence.""
Michael's fists tightened.
"Then we're going there.""
Victoria's house stood behind a tall stone wall.
The gate was locked.
A black security camera watched the driveway.
Detective Harris approached the intercom.
"Police. Open the gate.""
No answer.
He pressed it again.
"Mrs. Carter, we have a warrant.""
A few seconds passed.
Then the gate opened.
Victoria stood in the entrance hall wearing a cream-colored sweater.
She looked tired, but not surprised.
"Detective Harris. What an unpleasant morning.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"We need to know where Noah is.""
Victoria's expression remained blank.
"I don't know anyone named Noah.""
Michael moved past Daniel.
"Where is my son?""
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
"You have no son.""
Michael froze.
"His name is Noah Carter.""
"That child belongs to my family.""
"He's my child!""
Victoria raised her voice.
"You were convicted of murdering my daughter in the court of public opinion long before this trial. You have no right to demand anything.""
Daniel stepped between them.
"The guardianship documents are fraudulent. We have medical records identifying Michael as the biological father.""
Victoria laughed.
"Medical records? From a clinic that accepts anonymous payments?""
Harris held up the warrant.
"We are authorized to search this property.""
Victoria's face changed.
"You cannot come into my home.""
"We can.""
Two officers entered.
Michael followed them.
They searched the downstairs rooms first.
Nothing.
Then one officer called from the second floor.
"Detective! We found something.""
They hurried upstairs.
A bedroom had been converted into a nursery.
A white crib stood beside the window.
A blue blanket lay folded on a chair.
But the room was empty.
Michael looked around desperately.
"Where is he?""
Victoria stood in the doorway.
"He's gone.""
Michael turned.
"What do you mean?""
"He was moved yesterday.""
"Where?""
Victoria smiled faintly.
"Somewhere safe.""
Michael stepped toward her.
"Give me my son.""
Harris caught his arm.
"Michael, don't.""
Daniel looked at Victoria.
"Who moved him?""
Victoria's smile disappeared.
"Ask the person who came to collect him.""
"Who?""
She said nothing.
An officer examined the crib.
There was a small white envelope tucked beneath the mattress.
Daniel removed it carefully.
Inside was a photograph of Sarah.
She was sitting in a wheelchair, holding Noah.
On the back, she had written:
Victoria, you can hide my son, but you cannot hide the truth.
Daniel turned the photograph over again.
A second message had been written beneath the first.
If anything happens to me, tell Michael that the person who saved my life is closer than he thinks.
Michael looked at Victoria.
"Who saved Sarah?""
Victoria's eyes filled.
For a moment, she looked genuinely frightened.
Then she whispered:
"Your wife was never supposed to survive.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Who arranged the first attack?""
Victoria shook her head.
"I didn't.""
Michael stared at her.
"Then who did?""
Victoria looked toward the nursery.
"Jason.""
Michael clenched his jaw.
"And the hospital?""
"Dr. Reed.""
"Then why did you help them?""
Victoria began crying.
"Because I had no choice.""
Daniel's voice hardened.
"You had a choice every time you lied.""
Victoria covered her face.
"Jason told me Sarah would expose everything. He said if she went to the police, we would all lose our money. I thought he would frighten her. I never thought...""
"Never thought what?"" Michael demanded.
"That he would push her.""
Michael stared at her.
"And when you discovered she was alive?""
Victoria lowered her hands.
"Jason told me she was too dangerous to leave free. Dr. Reed said he could keep her somewhere until she recovered.""
"You knew she was alive for eleven months?""
Victoria nodded.
Michael felt his legs weaken.
"You let me bury an empty coffin?""
Victoria started sobbing.
"I thought it was the only way to protect Emily.""
Michael stepped closer.
"Don't you ever use my daughter's name to excuse what you did.""
Then a voice came from behind them.
"She's lying.""
Everyone turned.
A woman stood at the top of the staircase.
She was wearing a dark coat.
Her hair was shorter than Michael remembered.
There was a scar near her temple.
But her eyes...
Michael knew those eyes.
His heart stopped.
"Sarah?""
The woman looked at him.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Michael.""
He took one step forward.
Then another.
"You're alive?""
Sarah nodded.
"I tried to come home.""
Michael reached for her.
But before he could touch her, she looked toward the empty nursery.
"Where's Noah?""
Nobody answered.
Sarah's face crumpled.
"Where is my baby?""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Victoria says he was moved yesterday.""
Sarah turned toward her mother.
"What did you do?""
Victoria began shaking.
"I was trying to protect him.""
Sarah took a step backward.
"From whom?""
Victoria looked at Michael.
Then at Sarah.
And finally, she whispered:
"From the man who has been pretending to be your brother.""
Sarah went completely still.
Daniel frowned.
"What?""
Victoria's voice trembled.
"Jason isn't your brother, Sarah.""
Michael stared at her.
Victoria looked directly at Sarah.
"He's your father's son from his first marriage. But he wasn't the only child he had before he married me.""
Sarah's lips parted.
"What are you saying?""
Victoria wiped her tears.
"Jason and I have been protecting the same secret for thirty years.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"What secret?""
Victoria looked at Michael.
Then she delivered the revelation that changed everything.
"Jason is the biological father of Noah.""
Sarah screamed.
"That's a lie!""
Victoria shook her head.
"Ask Dr. Reed. Ask him whose name is on the original birth records.""
Michael felt the floor disappear beneath him.
But Daniel noticed something strange.
Victoria wasn't looking at Sarah.
She was looking at the staircase.
Someone was standing just beyond the doorway.
Someone who had heard every word.
And when the figure stepped into the light, Sarah whispered a name nobody in that room expected.
"Margaret?""
The retired nurse stood there, holding a small baby carrier.
Inside it was a sleeping little boy.
Noah.
May you like
And Margaret's next words made the entire room fall silent.
"Sarah, sweetheart, there's something you need to know before you take your son home.""
