Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Declared Dead Twice

"That's impossible.""

Michael repeated the words as Daniel lowered his phone.

Sarah had been dead for eleven months. He had identified her body, attended her funeral, and watched them lower her coffin into the ground.

He remembered the flowers.

He remembered Emily crying against his chest.

He remembered Victoria standing beside the grave, telling him that he had destroyed her daughter's life.

Now a doctor was claiming that Sarah had never died at the hospital.

"Tell me exactly what the receptionist said," Michael demanded.

Daniel held up his hand.

"She said Dr. Reed arrived at the family services office asking to see Emily. He presented himself as a family friend and claimed he had information about Sarah's medical history.""

"Did they let him in?""

"No. The social worker recognized something was wrong and called security.""

"Where is Emily?""

"She's been moved to a secure location.""

Michael grabbed his coat.

"I'm going to her.""

"Not yet. The police are on their way.""

"She's seven years old, Daniel! Someone just threatened her!""

"I know. And the worst thing we can do is let whoever is behind this know exactly where she's being taken.""

Michael stopped.

Daniel's expression softened.

"We will get her back to you. I promise.""

Michael looked at the photograph of Sarah on the desk.

The woman in the picture was smiling.

Her hair fell over one shoulder, and her hand rested gently on her stomach.

It had been taken shortly before Emily was born.

"She knew," Michael whispered.

Daniel looked at him.

"Who?""

"Sarah. She knew something terrible was happening, and she tried to protect Emily.""

Daniel nodded.

"Then we need to finish what she started.""

Two hours later, Detective Harris arrived at the secret room.

He was carrying a thick medical file.

"We located Dr. Reed's former hospital records," he announced.

Daniel opened the folder.

"Where did you get these?""

"An administrator at St. Mary's provided them after we obtained an emergency warrant.""

Michael leaned forward.

"What do they say?""

Harris turned to the relevant page.

"According to the original admission records, Sarah Carter was brought to the emergency department at 10:56 p.m. on November fourteenth.""

Michael nodded.

"That's the night she died.""

"Yes. But here's the problem. The hospital's official death certificate lists her death at 11:18 p.m.""

Daniel looked up.

"And?""

"The electronic system shows that the certificate was entered at 10:41 p.m.""

Michael frowned.

"Seventeen minutes before she was even admitted?""

"Exactly.""

Daniel slowly closed the folder.

"Someone entered the death certificate before the hospital received her.""

Harris nodded.

"And there's another inconsistency. The ambulance report says Sarah was breathing when she arrived.""

Michael felt his chest tighten.

"How long was she alive?""

"We don't know. The original emergency notes were removed from the system. But we found a handwritten copy in the records of a nurse who left the hospital shortly afterward.""

Daniel turned the page.

The nurse's name was Margaret Lewis.

"Where is she now?"" he asked.

Harris checked his notes.

"Retired. Lives outside town.""

Michael looked at the report.

"Can she tell us what happened?""

"That's what we're going to find out.""

Before anyone could move, Daniel noticed a small notation at the bottom of the medical record.

Patient transferred at 12:04 a.m.

He pointed to it.

"Transferred where?""

Harris examined the page.

"That's the strange part. The destination field is blank.""

Michael stared.

"You're saying they moved my wife somewhere else?""

"That's what the record suggests.""

"Then where is she?""

Nobody answered.

Daniel looked at the cassette tape.

"Maybe Sarah knew.""

He turned to the forensic technician, who had been working on the damaged recording.

"Any progress?""

The technician nodded.

"We recovered part of the missing audio. There's a second voice at the end.""

"Can we identify it?""

"Possibly. Listen.""

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then Sarah spoke.

"If you're hearing this, it means I couldn't tell you in person.""

A pause.

"I know you tried to save me. I know you called for help.""

Michael closed his eyes.

Then another voice emerged.

A woman.

"You have to leave now, Sarah.""

Daniel leaned closer.

"Who is that?""

The technician increased the volume.

Sarah answered.

"I can't leave Emily.""

The woman spoke again.

"Then let me take her. I can keep her safe.""

Michael's eyes opened.

He recognized the voice.

He looked at Daniel.

"That's Margaret.""

They found Margaret Lewis at a small house near the lake.

She was seventy-two, with silver hair and a cane resting beside her front door.

When Detective Harris showed her Sarah's photograph, she began crying.

"I wondered when someone would come.""

Daniel placed the medical report on the table.

"We need to know what happened that night.""

Margaret stared at the photograph.

"Sarah wasn't supposed to die.""

Michael leaned forward.

"What do you mean?""

Margaret looked directly at him.

"Your wife was brought to St. Mary's alive. She had a severe head injury, but she was conscious when we transferred her to the emergency department.""

Michael's hands began shaking.

"Did she speak?""

"Yes.""

"What did she say?""

Margaret swallowed.

"She asked for her daughter.""

Michael lowered his head.

Margaret continued.

"Dr. Reed came into the emergency room shortly after she arrived. He told us Sarah had no chance of survival. But her vital signs didn't support that conclusion.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Did you challenge him?""

"I did. He ordered me out of the room.""

"What happened afterward?""

Margaret stared at her hands.

"Victoria arrived.""

Michael felt sick.

"She came to the hospital?""

"Yes. She spoke privately with Dr. Reed. Then they moved Sarah to another treatment room.""

"Why?""

Margaret shook her head.

"I don't know. But I saw Victoria hand him an envelope.""

Daniel wrote something down.

"Money?""

"I believe so.""

Michael's voice cracked.

"Was Sarah alive when they moved her?""

Margaret nodded.

"She was.""

The room went silent.

Michael stood and walked toward the window.

He pressed both hands against the glass.

For eleven months, he had mourned his wife.

But the woman he had buried had apparently been alive after arriving at the hospital.

"Where did they take her?"" he whispered.

Margaret reached into a drawer.

"I kept something.""

She placed a folded piece of paper on the table.

It was a handwritten transfer note.

At the top was the name of a private medical facility.

*Riverside Recovery Center.*

Daniel read it twice.

"That's a psychiatric facility.""

Margaret nodded.

"Dr. Reed said Sarah was suffering from a severe mental breakdown. He told the staff she had become violent and needed to be isolated.""

Michael turned.

"Sarah wasn't mentally ill.""

"I know.""

"She was frightened because somebody was trying to kill her!""

Margaret lowered her eyes.

"I know that now.""

Daniel examined the transfer note.

"Why didn't you report this?""

Margaret's eyes filled.

"Because my husband was dying. Dr. Reed threatened to have my nursing license revoked. He said if I spoke, I would lose everything.""

Michael stared at her.

"Did you know they declared her dead?""

Margaret nodded.

"I saw the certificate. I knew it was false.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

She began crying.

"Because Victoria told me you were involved. She said you had attacked Sarah and that you were the reason she was in that condition.""

Michael took a step back.

"She told you I did it?""

"Yes.""

Daniel closed the folder.

"Mrs. Lewis, we need you to make a formal statement.""

Margaret nodded.

"I will.""

Then she looked at Michael.

"There is something else.""

He turned.

"What?""

"Sarah asked me to give you a message if I ever saw you.""

Michael moved closer.

"What message?""

Margaret took a deep breath.

"She said, 'Tell Michael the baby wasn't the only person they were trying to take away from me.''"

Michael froze.

"Baby?""

Margaret looked confused.

"Yes. She was pregnant.""

Daniel slowly looked up.

Michael shook his head.

"No. That's impossible.""

Margaret reached for another document.

"It was early. Maybe six or seven weeks. But the test was positive.""

Michael stared at the paper.

Sarah had been pregnant when she died.

And nobody had told him.

Not Victoria.

Not Jason.

Not Dr. Reed.

He felt the room closing around him.

"Was the baby okay?""

Margaret looked away.

"I don't know.""

Daniel asked the question Michael couldn't bring himself to ask.

"Did the hospital perform a procedure?""

Margaret nodded.

"Dr. Reed ordered a transfer to the obstetrics unit, but the records were later deleted.""

Michael gripped the chair.

"Where is my child?""

Margaret began crying harder.

"I don't know.""

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a small photograph.

It showed Sarah sitting in a wheelchair outside Riverside Recovery Center.

The date was printed on the back.

Three months after the night she supposedly died.

Michael's knees nearly buckled.

Daniel took the photograph.

"You're certain this is Sarah?""

Margaret nodded.

"I saw her myself. She was alive.""

Michael stared at the picture.

His wife had survived.

She had been hidden.

And for three months, she had been somewhere he could have reached her.

He looked at Margaret.

"Who took this photograph?""

She hesitated.

"One of the nurses.""

"Where is she?""

Margaret's answer came quietly.

"She disappeared.""

Daniel examined the back of the photograph.

There was a handwritten note.

Room 17. Ask for the woman who remembers the little boy.

Michael looked up.

"What little boy?""

Margaret shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Daniel turned to Detective Harris.

"Get us to Riverside.""

But Harris's phone rang before he could answer.

He listened for several seconds.

Then his expression changed.

"Mr. Brooks, we have a serious problem.""

Daniel looked up.

"What?""

"Riverside Recovery Center closed six months ago.""

Michael stared.

"Then where is Sarah?""

Harris lowered his phone.

"According to the property records, the entire facility was purchased by a company called Westbridge Holdings.""

The same company that had stolen Emily's inheritance.

And the registered owner of Westbridge Holdings was Victoria Carter.

That night, Michael finally saw Emily.

She ran into his arms the moment he entered the safe house.

"Daddy!""

He lifted her and held her tightly.

"I missed you, princess.""

Emily touched the red heart on his cheek.

"You still have it.""

Michael smiled through his tears.

"Of course.""

She studied his face.

"Did you find Mommy?""

Michael struggled to answer.

"Not yet, sweetheart.""

Emily lowered her head.

"She's alive.""

Michael froze.

"What?""

Emily looked at him.

"Mommy told me she would come back when Grandma stopped being angry.""

Michael's heart pounded.

"When did she tell you that?""

Emily looked toward her backpack.

"There's another picture.""

She pulled out a small photograph.

It showed Sarah sitting in a wheelchair.

On her lap was a baby wrapped in a white blanket.

And written across the bottom were four words.

My children. My whole world.

Michael stared at the photograph.

There were two children in the picture.

Emily.

And a baby boy.

He looked at his daughter.

"Who is the little boy?""

Emily whispered:

"Mommy said his name was Noah.""

Michael felt the blood drain from his face.

May you like

Because Sarah had never told him she was carrying twins.

And somewhere, eleven months after her supposed death, one of his children might still be alive.
