Chapter 6: The Secret Room

The house had been empty for nearly six years.

It stood on a quiet stretch of road outside town, surrounded by tall trees and an iron fence that had begun to rust.

Michael remembered visiting it once with Sarah.

Her father had owned several properties, but this one was different.

He never invited guests.

He never discussed it.

And after his death, Victoria had insisted that it be sold.

It never was.

Daniel arrived with two detectives shortly after sunrise.

Michael was brought along under supervision because the property belonged to Sarah's late father, but Daniel warned him not to touch anything.

Emily remained with the social worker at a nearby family services office.

Before leaving, she had handed Daniel a folded drawing.

A red heart.

A yellow bear.

And a small black door.

"Mommy said the door was behind the books," she'd explained.

Daniel had kept the drawing in his jacket pocket.

Now he stood inside the old house, looking at a wall of bookshelves.

"Which room did Sarah mention?"" he asked.

Michael walked slowly through the study.

"Her father used to spend hours in here. She said he had a private office behind the main library.""

One detective examined the shelves.

"Any idea how to open it?""

Michael looked around.

Then he noticed something strange.

A photograph sat on the desk.

It showed Sarah as a child standing beside her father.

Behind them was a large bookshelf.

But one book was turned upside down.

Michael pulled it out.

Nothing happened.

Daniel looked over.

"Try the shelf.""

Michael pressed the wood around the empty space.

A quiet click sounded.

Then the entire bookshelf moved forward several inches.

The detective stepped closer.

"Well, that's interesting.""

Behind the shelf was a narrow wooden door.

A black metal handle sat at the center.

Michael stared at it.

"Sarah knew.""

Daniel opened the door carefully.

The air inside smelled stale, like old paper and dust.

A small room appeared beyond it.

There was a desk, a chair, two filing cabinets, and a wall covered with photographs.

Daniel stepped inside.

"What is this place?""

Michael moved toward the desk.

"I don't know.""

One detective began photographing the room.

"Nobody touch anything until we've documented it.""

Michael stopped.

On the wall was a photograph of Sarah's father standing beside a woman Michael had never seen before.

She was holding a baby.

Behind them, written in black marker, was a date.

June 1998.

Michael frowned.

"Who is that woman?""

Daniel examined the picture.

"Could be a relative.""

Michael looked closer.

"No. Sarah never mentioned her.""

He turned to another photograph.

The same woman appeared again.

This time, she stood beside a young boy.

The boy had dark hair and a familiar smile.

Michael felt a chill.

"Jason.""

Daniel turned.

"What?""

Michael pointed.

"That's Jason as a child.""

The detective carefully removed the photograph from the wall after documenting its position.

On the back was a handwritten note.

To my son, Jason. One day you'll understand why I couldn't bring you home.

Michael stared at the words.

"Jason was Sarah's half-brother?""

Daniel nodded slowly.

"It appears so.""

Michael looked at the photographs again.

Sarah's father had apparently maintained another family for years.

Victoria must have known.

But why had she kept it hidden?

Daniel opened the first filing cabinet.

Inside were folders labeled with dates and names.

One contained bank statements.

Another held property deeds.

A third contained medical documents.

Then Daniel found something unusual.

A folder marked:

SARAH CARTER — TRUST TRANSFERS.

He opened it.

Inside were copies of documents showing that Sarah's father had established two separate trusts.

One for Sarah.

One for Jason.

But the second trust had been terminated shortly after his death.

Daniel frowned.

"Michael, come here.""

Michael leaned over the desk.

"What?""

"Look at this.""

Daniel pointed to a signature.

It appeared on a transfer authorization dated two months before Sarah's death.

The document transferred ownership of a property worth nearly $3 million.

The recipient was Westbridge Holdings.

Michael recognized the name.

"That's the company from the envelope.""

Daniel nodded.

"And look at who authorized the transfer.""

Michael read the name.

Victoria Carter.

His jaw tightened.

"She had no authority to do that.""

"Apparently, she used a power of attorney.""

"Sarah never gave her one.""

Daniel turned the page.

There it was.

A power of attorney bearing Sarah's signature.

Michael stared.

"That's not her signature.""

Daniel examined it.

"You're certain?""

"I watched her sign documents hundreds of times. Look at the way she writes the R.""

Daniel compared the signature with the letter in the envelope.

The difference was obvious.

The detective stepped closer.

"Could be forged.""

Michael looked at him.

"Then why wasn't this discovered before?""

The detective didn't answer.

Daniel continued through the folder.

Then he found a photograph clipped to the back.

It showed Victoria standing outside a bank with a man in a gray coat.

The date was printed beneath the image.

Three days after Sarah's death.

Michael leaned closer.

"Who's that?""

Daniel looked at the photograph.

"I don't know.""

The detective turned it over.

A name had been written on the back.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

Michael's face changed.

"Reed?""

Daniel looked up.

"Do you know him?""

"He was Sarah's doctor.""

The detective frowned.

"Her family physician?""

"No. The doctor who treated her after the accident.""

Daniel slowly lowered the photograph.

"What accident?""

Michael swallowed.

"Sarah had a car accident about two months before she died. She told me she'd slipped on ice and hit her head.""

"Was she hospitalized?""

"For two nights.""

"At which hospital?""

"St. Mary's.""

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

"Then we need her medical records.""

A detective examined the filing cabinet.

"There's something else.""

He held up a small black notebook.

Inside were handwritten entries.

Most were financial calculations.

But one page contained a list of dates.

Next to each date was a name.

Victoria.

Jason.

Dr. Reed.

And beneath them, one final name.

Michael Carter.

His stomach tightened.

"Why is my name there?""

Daniel read the note beneath it.

If they blame Michael, they will never look at the real reason.

Michael stared.

"What real reason?""

Daniel turned the page.

A handwritten sentence appeared.

Father didn't die naturally.

The room went silent.

Michael looked at the photograph of Sarah's father.

"You're saying Sarah suspected someone killed him?""

Daniel nodded.

"That's what this suggests.""

The detective picked up another folder.

It contained an old death certificate.

The official cause of death was listed as cardiac arrest.

But attached to it was a handwritten medical note.

Possible poisoning. Toxicology incomplete.

Michael's face went pale.

"Who wrote that?""

Daniel checked the signature.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

The same doctor who had treated Sarah after her accident.

And the same man photographed with Victoria three days after Sarah died.

Daniel took a deep breath.

"We need to find him.""

A phone rang.

It was the detective's.

He answered.

"Yes?""

A pause.

"Where?""

His expression changed.

He turned toward Daniel.

"We found Victoria.""

"Where?""

"At a private clinic outside the city.""

Michael stepped forward.

"Is she with Jason?""

The detective shook his head.

"No. She's alone.""

"Then arrest her.""

"We can't yet. We need more evidence connecting her directly to the murder.""

Daniel looked at the notebook.

"We have financial fraud, a potentially forged power of attorney, and an audio recording placing her at the scene.""

"Not enough for a murder arrest.""

Michael slammed his hand against the desk.

"She was there!""

Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.

"We'll get there.""

The detective ended the call.

"There's another detail. Victoria requested a meeting with someone before she disappeared.""

Daniel asked, "Who?""

The detective checked his notes.

"Dr. Samuel Reed.""

Michael felt the blood drain from his face.

"She's going to him.""

Daniel immediately picked up his phone.

"Get a team to that clinic.""

The detective shook his head.

"She's already left.""

"Then find her car.""

"We have officers searching.""

Daniel looked toward the secret room.

Something about the old documents was bothering him.

He returned to the desk and opened the final filing cabinet.

Inside was a small metal box.

It had a combination lock.

Michael recognized the numbers written on a note taped beneath it.

Sarah's birthday.

Daniel entered the numbers.

The lock clicked.

Inside lay a cassette tape, a folded letter, and a photograph.

The photograph showed Sarah sitting in a hospital bed.

She looked pale.

A bandage covered her forehead.

But what caught Daniel's attention was the person standing beside her.

Victoria.

Holding a glass of water.

On the back, Sarah had written:

The first attempt failed.

Michael stared at the photograph.

"First attempt?""

Daniel opened the folded letter.

It contained only three paragraphs.

Daniel,

If you have found this room, then I was right. My father didn't die of a heart attack. He was poisoned, and I believe the same people who took his life are now trying to take mine.

I survived the first attempt because someone switched the medication before I swallowed it. I don't know who saved me. I only know that the person I trusted most was standing beside my hospital bed when it happened.

Do not trust the doctor.

Daniel lowered the paper.

Michael looked at the cassette.

"What's on that?""

The detective found an old tape recorder inside the cabinet.

He inserted the cassette.

A few seconds of static followed.

Then Sarah's voice filled the room.

"Michael, if you're hearing this, I'm sorry.""

Michael closed his eyes.

It was her.

Her voice.

Her breath.

The little pause she always made before saying his name.

"I need you to know that I never believed you would hurt me. I know what happened the night I fell. I know who was there.""

A faint sound came from the background.

A door opening.

Then Sarah continued.

"The person who saved me the first time was...""

The recording suddenly crackled.

A loud mechanical click followed.

Then silence.

The detective examined the recorder.

"The tape is damaged.""

Daniel looked at Michael.

"Can it be repaired?""

"Maybe.""

Michael stared at the cassette.

Sarah had been trying to tell him something.

Someone had saved her life once.

Someone who might still be alive.

And that person could identify the real killer.

Daniel carefully removed the tape.

Then he noticed something written on its plastic case.

Play backward.

He frowned.

"That's strange.""

The detective took the cassette.

"We'll have the forensic team examine it.""

Michael looked toward the open secret door.

"How many secrets did this family have?""

Daniel didn't answer.

His phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Emily sitting in the family services office.

Beneath it were nine words:

Stop searching, or your daughter will meet her mother.

Michael's legs nearly gave way.

Daniel grabbed his arm.

"Who sent that?""

Michael shook his head.

Then another message appeared.

This time, there was no photograph.

Only a name.

*DR. SAMUEL REED.*

And beneath it:

He is not the man who saved Sarah.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Michael looked at the detective.

"Get my daughter out of there.""

But before anyone could move, the phone rang again.

It was the family services office.

Daniel answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's frightened voice came through.

"Mr. Brooks, there's been an incident.""

Daniel stood straight.

"What happened?""

"Emily is safe, but someone tried to enter the building claiming to be her uncle.""

"Was it Jason?""

The woman hesitated.

"No.""

"Then who?""

Her answer made Michael's blood run cold.

"It was Dr. Samuel Reed.""

And according to the receptionist, he had brought medical records proving that Sarah Carter had never died at the hospital.

May you like

She had been declared dead somewhere else.

*Somewhere nobody had thought to search.*
