Chapter 4: The Voice Behind the Heart

The courthouse emptied slowly that evening, but nobody was allowed to leave the building without answering questions.

Victoria sat in a private interview room with her attorney, refusing to explain the recording she had mentioned. Michael remained under guard, waiting for Daniel to return with news about the teddy bear.

Emily had fallen asleep against her father's shoulder.

The red heart was still visible on Michael's cheek.

He hadn't washed it off.

Daniel entered the room carrying a paper cup of coffee and a thick folder.

"Michael, we have a problem.""

Michael looked up.

"Did they find the bear?""

"Not yet. The security team searched Victoria's vehicle, her house, and the storage unit she rented last year. Nothing.""

"Then where is it?""

Daniel pulled out a chair.

"That's what we're trying to establish.""

Michael glanced at Emily.

"She said her mother told her the bear would tell everyone who was inside the house that night.""

Daniel nodded.

"I believe Sarah left us a recording. But I don't think she wanted just anyone to find it.""

"Why?""

"Because the recording may implicate someone who hasn't been questioned.""

Michael rubbed his forehead.

"Who?""

Daniel opened the folder.

"Sarah's brother.""

Michael stared at him.

"Jason?""

"Yes.""

"Jason was in Chicago when Sarah died.""

"That's what he told the police.""

"Then why would he be involved?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Because his credit card was used at a gas station less than two miles from your house that night.""

Michael felt his stomach tighten.

"Did the police know?""

"They did. But they dismissed it because Jason claimed his wallet had been stolen.""

Michael shook his head.

"Sarah trusted Jason.""

"Maybe she did. But she was investigating something involving him before she died.""

Daniel placed a printed email on the table.

It had been recovered from Sarah's old laptop.

The message was dated nine days before her death.

Jason, I know about the transfers. I know you and Mom have been using Emily's trust account. You have until Friday to put the money back. After that, I'm going to Daniel.

Michael read it twice.

"She was threatening to report her own brother?""

"Apparently.""

"Why didn't she tell me?""

Daniel leaned back.

"Perhaps she thought you would confront him.""

Michael looked down.

He remembered Jason.

The charming brother who always arrived at family gatherings with expensive gifts and stories about business opportunities. The man who had borrowed money from Sarah repeatedly, promising to repay every dollar.

Michael had never liked him.

But Sarah always defended him.

"He's my brother," she'd say.

"He makes mistakes, but he loves me.""

Michael closed the folder.

"Find him.""

Daniel nodded.

"I've already requested his location records.""

A soft voice interrupted them.

"Daddy?""

Michael turned.

Emily was awake.

"Did you find Mommy's bear?""

"Not yet, princess.""

"Grandma knows where it is.""

Michael gently moved her hair away from her forehead.

"Why do you think that?""

Emily looked toward the closed door.

"Because I saw her talking to Uncle Jason.""

Daniel immediately leaned forward.

"When?""

"After Mommy went to heaven.""

Michael's expression changed.

"Where?""

"At Grandma's house. I was playing upstairs. Uncle Jason came into the kitchen.""

"What did they say?""

Emily thought carefully.

"Uncle Jason said, 'Did you get rid of it?''"

Daniel exchanged a glance with Michael.

"What did Grandma say?""

Emily lowered her voice.

"She said, 'Not yet. I need to know whether the little girl saw anything.''"

Michael felt a chill travel down his spine.

Daniel wrote something in his notebook.

"Did they see you?""

Emily shook her head.

"I was hiding.""

"Did you hear anything else?""

Emily nodded.

"Uncle Jason said Mommy had made a copy.""

"A copy of what?""

Emily shrugged.

"Then Grandma said she had to find it before the police did.""

Daniel slowly closed his notebook.

"Michael, this changes everything.""

Michael looked at his daughter.

"What else did you hear, sweetheart?""

Emily hesitated.

Then she said something that made Michael's heart stop.

"Uncle Jason said he was sorry he had to push Mommy.""

The room became silent.

Daniel stopped writing.

Michael stared at his daughter.

"Push her?""

Emily nodded.

"Grandma told him not to say that.""

"Did he say anything else?""

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"He said Mommy hit her head. He said he didn't mean for her to fall.""

Michael closed his eyes.

For eleven months, he had imagined Sarah's final moments.

He had imagined her frightened.

He had imagined her calling his name.

He had imagined a thousand things he could have done differently.

But he had never imagined that her own brother might have been standing there.

Daniel gently placed a hand on Emily's shoulder.

"Thank you for telling us. You did nothing wrong.""

Michael looked at him.

"Jason killed her.""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

"We have to prove what happened. But this gives us a direction.""

Just then, Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

"Brooks.""

A woman's voice came through.

"Mr. Brooks, this is Officer Bennett. We found something.""

Daniel stood.

"What?""

"Mrs. Victoria's storage unit contained a children's toy box. Inside was a yellow teddy bear.""

Michael grabbed the edge of the table.

"Is it the one?""

"There's a red heart stitched over its chest.""

Emily sat up.

"That's Mommy's bear!""

Daniel spoke quickly.

"Don't touch the stitching. Preserve everything.""

Officer Bennett hesitated.

"There's a problem.""

"What problem?""

"The heart has already been cut open.""

Daniel looked at Michael.

"Was anything inside?""

"Yes," the officer replied.

"A small memory card.""

Michael felt his pulse quicken.

"Is it damaged?""

"We haven't checked yet.""

Daniel turned toward Emily.

"Your mommy left us something.""

Emily smiled faintly.

"She said the bear would remember.""

Daniel ended the call.

For the first time since the trial began, he felt they were close to the truth.

But when the forensic technician examined the memory card forty minutes later, he discovered something unexpected.

The card contained two audio files.

One was dated the night Sarah died.

The other was dated three days later.

Daniel played the first recording.

At first, there was only static.

Then Sarah's voice emerged.

"Jason, put the papers down.""

A man's voice answered.

"You're making a mistake.""

"I know what you did.""

"You don't understand.""

"I understand perfectly. You took Emily's money.""

A chair scraped across the floor.

Then another voice spoke.

A woman's voice.

Victoria.

"Jason, just give her the documents.""

Sarah sounded frightened.

"No. I'm calling Michael.""

There was a crash.

A sharp gasp.

Then the recording ended.

Michael gripped the table.

"Play the second one.""

Daniel did.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then Sarah whispered:

"If anything happens to me, the person who pushed me wasn't the only person responsible.""

A door creaked.

Footsteps approached.

And a voice spoke so quietly that the technician had to increase the volume.

"Mom, she isn't dead.""

Victoria.

Daniel stopped the recording.

Michael looked at him.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel replayed the last few seconds.

Victoria's voice came through again.

"Mom, she isn't dead.""

Then a second voice answered.

Jason.

"Then finish what you started.""

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Michael slowly stood.

"Sarah was alive after the fall.""

Daniel looked at him.

"That's what it sounds like.""

Michael's eyes filled with tears.

"And they left her there?""

Daniel didn't answer.

He didn't have to.

Because the next thing the forensic technician said was even worse.

"Mr. Brooks, there's another detail. The recording wasn't made inside the house.""

Daniel frowned.

"Where was it made?""

The technician rotated his monitor.

"The audio metadata identifies a nearby Bluetooth security device. It was registered to a vehicle.""

Daniel read the registration number.

His face went pale.

It belonged to Michael's car.

The same car the police had seized the night Sarah died.

And suddenly, Daniel understood something terrifying.

The recording had not been hidden in the teddy bear because Sarah couldn't find another place.

She had hidden it there because she believed the person who took Michael's car might destroy everything else.

But who had been driving it that night?

Daniel turned toward Michael.

"Did anyone else have access to your vehicle?""

Michael shook his head.

Then stopped.

He remembered the spare key.

The one he had given Jason months earlier.

May you like

For emergencies.

And Jason had never returned it.
