Chapter 1: The Heart on His Cheek

"Your daddy is a murderer!""

Victoria's voice tore through the courtroom.

Seven-year-old Emily froze beside the defense table, clutching a red crayon in her tiny fist. Her father, Michael Carter, sat in an orange prison jumpsuit, his wrists cuffed, his eyes fixed on the wooden floor.

He didn't look like a murderer.

He looked like a man who had already lost everything.

His wife was dead. His freedom was slipping away. And now his own mother-in-law was standing ten feet away, making sure everyone knew she wanted him buried behind bars.

"Stop looking at him, Emily!"" Victoria snapped.

"That man killed your mother!""

Emily didn't move.

Instead, she stepped closer to her father.

"Hi, Daddy.""

Michael lifted his head. His lips trembled.

"Hey, princess.""

"Are you sad?""

He swallowed.

"A little.""

"Because everybody thinks you're bad?""

Michael looked away.

"I don't want you worrying about grown-up things, sweetheart.""

Emily climbed onto the small wooden chair beside him. Then she took the red crayon from her pocket.

"Can I draw something?""

Michael managed a faint smile.

"Of course.""

The courtroom watched as the little girl reached up and carefully drew a small red heart on her father's cheek.

One curved line.

Then another.

She leaned back to admire her work.

"There.""

Michael blinked.

"What is it?""

"A heart.""

"Why did you draw that?""

Emily touched his cheek with her little fingers.

"So everyone can see you're a good daddy.""

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Even the court reporter stopped typing.

Michael's face crumpled. He lowered his head and pressed his lips against Emily's hand.

"I love you so much," he whispered.

Victoria slammed her palm against the table.

"This is ridiculous! Stop defending that monster!""

Emily turned toward her grandmother.

"Grandma, Daddy never hurt Mommy.""

Victoria's expression hardened.

"You're seven years old. You don't understand what happened.""

"I do understand.""

"No, you don't!""

"Mommy said Daddy was going to take care of me.""

Victoria's cheeks flushed.

"Enough!""

Attorney Daniel Brooks, Michael's court-appointed defense lawyer, rose from his chair.

"Your Honor, I'd ask that the witness's family refrain from intimidating this child.""

Judge Harrison adjusted his glasses.

"Mrs. Victoria, please control yourself. This is a courtroom, not your living room.""

Victoria sat down, but her fingers continued tapping nervously against the table.

Daniel crouched beside Emily.

"Sweetheart, do you need some water?""

Emily shook her head.

Then she looked at him with unusual seriousness.

"Are you Daddy's lawyer?""

"Yes, I am.""

"Are you trying to help him go home?""

"That's exactly what I'm trying to do.""

Emily glanced at Victoria.

Then she reached into the little pink backpack hanging from her shoulder.

"I have something for you.""

She pulled out a small white envelope.

It was old, slightly wrinkled, and sealed with a strip of yellow tape.

Daniel frowned.

"What's inside?""

Emily held it close to her chest.

"Mommy told me to give you this.""

Michael immediately turned toward her.

"Emily?""

His voice was barely audible.

"What did you just say?""

Emily looked at him.

"Mommy gave it to me before she went to heaven.""

Daniel slowly extended his hand.

"Can I see it, sweetheart?""

Emily nodded.

But before she could place the envelope in his palm, Victoria shot to her feet.

"NO!""

Her scream echoed through the courtroom.

"DO NOT OPEN THAT ENVELOPE!""

Everyone turned.

Judge Harrison struck his gavel.

"Mrs. Victoria! Sit down immediately!""

Victoria's face had gone pale.

"I object! That child doesn't know what she's carrying!""

Daniel held out his hand.

"On what legal grounds are you objecting to an envelope that hasn't even been examined?""

Victoria opened her mouth.

Then closed it.

For the first time that morning, she seemed unable to find the right words.

Daniel looked down at the envelope.

There was something written on the front in blue ink.

For Daniel Brooks. Only if Michael is accused of my death.

Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.

He looked at Michael.

Then at Emily.

"Who told you to bring this to me?""

Emily answered quietly.

"Mommy.""

"Did she tell you when to give it to me?""

Emily nodded.

"She said Grandma would try to stop you.""

Victoria grabbed the edge of the table.

"Your Honor, I demand that this be removed from the courtroom!""

Daniel carefully turned the envelope over.

A signature appeared beneath the yellow tape.

He recognized the handwriting immediately.

It belonged to Sarah Carter.

Michael's dead wife.

Daniel looked toward the judge.

"Your Honor, I request permission to preserve and examine this evidence.""

Judge Harrison studied the envelope.

"Granted. Do not alter anything until the court clerk has documented it.""

Daniel placed the envelope inside a clear evidence sleeve.

Michael stared at it as though he were looking at his wife's face.

"Sarah wrote that?""

Emily nodded.

"She said you would know what to do.""

Michael's eyes filled with tears.

"Baby, why didn't you tell me?""

Emily looked down at her shoes.

"Grandma said Mommy was confused before she died. She said I wasn't supposed to talk about Mommy's papers.""

Victoria stood again.

"That is enough! This hearing is about a murder, not some child's imaginary story!""

But Daniel wasn't listening to her anymore.

He was staring at the date written beneath Sarah's signature.

It was three days after the night she supposedly died.

Daniel slowly turned toward the prosecutor.

"Mr. Collins, I believe we have a serious problem with the timeline presented by the state.""

The prosecutor frowned.

"What are you suggesting?""

Daniel lifted the evidence sleeve.

"I'm suggesting that the deceased woman may have known something about her own murder investigation that nobody has bothered to investigate.""

Michael looked up.

And for the first time in eleven months, hope appeared in his eyes.

But Victoria's reaction was even more revealing.

She wasn't angry anymore.

She was terrified.

May you like

Because she knew exactly what Sarah had put inside that envelope.

And she knew that if Daniel opened it, the case against Michael might be the least of her problems.
