Chapter 9: The Last Secret
I didn’t open Rachel’s final letter immediately.
I just stared at it.
Because I knew.
I knew whatever was inside would change something.
The problem with secrets is that once you discover one, you start wondering how many more exist.
How many times had I looked at Derek and seen only what he wanted me to see?
How many conversations had hidden meanings?
How many smiles had been fake?
I finally unfolded the letter.
Claire,
If you are reading this, then Derek failed again.
My chest tightened.
I am sorry that you are meeting the truth this way.
I continued.
I need you to know something important. Derek was not the only person who knew about the money.
I looked up.
“Money?””
Vanessa went pale.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“You didn’t know?””
She shook her head.
I read further.
When I discovered Derek taking Lily’s inheritance, I confronted him. But someone else knew.
My heart began racing.
Someone else.
The words felt familiar.
Everyone had been hiding something.
His mother knew.
I looked at Margaret.
She froze.
“No.””
I lowered the letter.
“You knew?””
Margaret’s face collapsed.
“Claire…”
“You knew?””
She covered her mouth.
“I knew he was in trouble.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Not like Derek.
Different.
Because Margaret had become the person I trusted.
The person who stood beside me.
And now she was another piece of the lie.
“Why?””
She cried quietly.
“Because he begged me.””
I laughed.
Everyone begged after they were caught.
Nobody begged before they destroyed someone.
“He told me he would fix it.””
Margaret looked at Derek’s empty chair.
“He promised me he would become better.””
I shook my head.
“He never planned to.””
“I know.””
Her voice broke.
“I know now.””
The letter continued.
Margaret helped Derek hide what he did. She believed she was protecting her son. She didn’t understand she was protecting the person hurting everyone.
Margaret closed her eyes.
“She knew.””
Vanessa whispered.
“Rachel knew everything.””
I looked at the letter.
And then I noticed something.
A date.
The letter wasn’t written before Rachel died.
It was written after.
My heart stopped.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa leaned closer.
“What?””
“This date.””
I showed her.
Her face changed.
“Rachel wrote this after the accident.””
Nobody spoke.
Impossible.
Unless…
“She survived?””
The words came out quietly.
Margaret looked terrified.
“No.””
But she didn’t sound certain.
Vanessa grabbed the letter.
“There has to be an explanation.””
I looked at the date again.
Three days after the crash.
Three days.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
A photo.
A hospital bracelet.
Rachel Bennett.
My entire body froze.
“She was alive.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Margaret sat down.
“No.””
I looked at the screen.
A second message appeared.
Derek told everyone I died before anyone could ask questions.
My hands went numb.
The room disappeared.
The hospital sounds faded.
All I could see was that message.
All I could understand was one thing.
Rachel had not died that night.
She had been hidden.
“Who sent this?””
Nobody knew.
Then another message came.
This time with a location.
A nursing facility two hours away.
And one sentence.
She has been waiting for someone to believe her.
I stood immediately.
The nurse rushed in.
“Claire?””
“I need to leave.””
“You just had a baby.””
“I know.””
I looked at Emma.
My daughter.
The reason I couldn’t ignore this.
The reason I had to know.
“I need answers.””
Margaret stood.
“I’ll come with you.””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“But I need the truth.””
She wiped her tears.
“Then I’ll help you find it.””
Vanessa picked up her bag.
“I’m coming too.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She swallowed.
“Because I spent years loving a man who lied to me.””
Her eyes moved to Lily.
“And because Lily deserves the truth about her mother.””
We left the hospital before sunset.
Derek tried calling six times.
I didn’t answer.
The entire drive, nobody spoke.
Because there was nothing to say.
Not until we arrived.
The nursing facility was small.
Quiet.
Almost peaceful.
A woman at the front desk checked the name.
Then looked at us.
“You’re here to see Rachel?””
I couldn’t breathe.
“Yes.””
She studied my face.
“You’re Claire, aren’t you?””
My blood ran cold.
“How do you know me?””
The woman reached under the counter.
And pulled out a sealed envelope.
“She left instructions.””
My hands shook.
“For me?””
The receptionist nodded.
“She said if Derek ever married again, this letter was supposed to go to his wife.””
I opened it.
The first line destroyed me.
Claire,
If you are reading this, I am still alive.
I covered my mouth.
The next line made me cry.
And Derek is the reason I disappeared.
At that moment, the door at the end of the hallway opened.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Weaker.
But unmistakably familiar.
Rachel.
She looked at me.
At Margaret.
At Vanessa.
Then her eyes moved to Lily.
And she whispered the words nobody expected.
“My daughter…”
Lily froze.
“Mom?””
And behind us, a voice said:
“Claire.””
I turned.
Derek stood in the doorway.
He had followed us.
His face was completely broken.
Because he knew.
May you like
The last person he ever wanted to see again…
Was alive.
