Chapter 8: Rachel’s Final Letter
I read the letter three times.
Not because I didn’t understand the words.
Because I didn’t want to.
Sometimes your mind rejects the truth before your heart can survive it.
Rachel’s handwriting filled the page.
The letters were rushed.
Uneven.
Like she had written them while afraid.
I read the first paragraph again.
If anything happens to me, Derek is not telling the truth.
My hands trembled.
“Where did you get this?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Rachel gave it to me.””
“When?””
“The day before she died.””
The room became silent.
“Why didn’t you show anyone?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“Because Derek threatened me.””
My eyes lifted.
“What?””
She nodded.
“He told me if I said anything, he would make sure Lily was taken away from everyone.””
My heart hurt.
Another threat.
Another person controlled by fear.
“What else does it say?””
I looked back at the letter.
The next lines were harder.
Derek says I am ruining his life. He says I am trying to destroy his future. But the truth is, he destroyed ours first.
I swallowed.
Rachel knew.
She knew who he was.
She knew before I did.
The letter continued.
I found the accounts. I found what he took from Lily. I found what he borrowed and never returned.
My stomach twisted.
Vanessa watched me carefully.
“There’s more.””
I turned the page.
I am leaving tomorrow. I am taking Lily somewhere safe. If Derek tries to stop me, someone needs to know.
I looked up.
“Tomorrow was the night she died.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Margaret.
She was crying silently.
“Did you know?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
For the first time, I believed her.
Because Margaret looked destroyed.
Not defensive.
Not protective.
Destroyed.
The letter continued.
Claire, if you are reading this, I am sorry.
I froze.
My name.
“Why does she mention me?””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
I did.
I know Derek will eventually find someone else. Someone kind. Someone who believes the best in people. That is what he always looks for.
My throat tightened.
Please tell her she deserves better than being used as a second chance for a man who refuses to change.
I stopped.
I couldn’t read anymore.
Because Rachel had never met me.
And somehow, she understood me better than my husband did.
I folded the letter.
“Why did you bring this now?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway where Derek disappeared.
“Because he was going to do the same thing again.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
“He was going to leave you after Emma was born.””
I already knew.
But hearing it hurt.
Vanessa continued.
“He planned to move in with me.””
I stared.
“With you?””
She nodded.
“He told me you would never understand him.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“He said that?””
“Yes.””
I laughed quietly.
“He always made himself the victim.””
Vanessa nodded.
“That’s what he does.””
The door opened.
A nurse entered.
“Claire, the baby needs to be moved for some tests.””
I handed Emma over carefully.
Watching someone take my daughter away, even for a moment, made my heart panic.
The nurse smiled.
“She’ll be back soon.””
I nodded.
But something about losing control scared me.
Maybe because I had spent years letting Derek control everything.
My marriage.
My finances.
My reality.
No more.
When the nurse left, my phone rang.
Derek.
I stared at the screen.
Vanessa looked at me.
“You don’t have to answer.””
I did.
Because I wanted him to hear my voice.
I wanted him to know I knew.
“Claire.””
His voice sounded broken.
“What do you want?””
“I need to talk.””
“No.””
“Please.””
I almost hung up.
Then I asked:
“Did you love Rachel?””
Silence.
A long silence.
“Yes.””
The answer surprised me.
Because I expected another lie.
“Then why did you hurt her?””
His breathing became uneven.
“I was selfish.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
My voice shook.
“Because you did the same thing to me.””
“I know.””
“No, Derek.””
I closed my eyes.
“You don’t get to say that now.””
He whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at the hospital window.
At the city outside.
At the life I thought I had.
“Are you sorry because you hurt me?””
Silence.
“Or are you sorry because you got caught?””
He didn’t answer.
And that was my answer.
I ended the call.
A few minutes later, the nurse returned with Emma.
But she wasn’t alone.
She was carrying a small envelope.
“Someone left this for you.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
The nurse looked confused.
“A woman.””
My heart stopped.
“What woman?””
The nurse looked at the label.
“Rachel.””
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
The nurse handed it to me.
On the front was my name.
Claire.
Written in the same handwriting.
Rachel’s handwriting.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was one sentence.
May you like
One sentence that changed everything.
*“Claire, Derek is not the only person who betrayed you.””*
