Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Folder

I didn’t know what scared me more.

The fact that Derek looked terrified.

Or the fact that his mother sounded angry enough to finally stop defending him.

Derek ended the call slowly.

His hand stayed around his phone.

His eyes stayed on the floor.

For a moment, he looked like a man who had lost control of his own life.

Then he remembered I was there.

And the mask came back.

“Forget what you heard.””

I stared at him.

“Excuse me?””

“It’s complicated.””

I laughed again.

That horrible, broken laugh.

“Of course it is.””

“Claire—”

“No, I’m actually curious.””

I stepped closer.

“As long as you’re hurting me, everything is complicated. Everything has an explanation. Everything has a reason.””

My voice shook.

“But when I ask you to come to a doctor appointment, that’s inconvenient. When I need help, that’s drama. When I ask where you were, that’s an accusation.””

Derek looked away.

“Not now.””

“Then when?””

He had no answer.

Because there was never going to be a good time for him.

Only a time when I finally stopped asking.

The doorbell rang.

Derek froze.

Neither of us moved.

A few seconds later, it rang again.

Then came a knock.

Three sharp knocks.

Derek whispered, “No.””

I looked at him.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

The door opened before he could reach it.

Margaret walked inside.

She was still wearing the elegant cream coat she always wore to church events and business dinners. Her silver hair was perfectly styled.

But her face was different.

There was no warmth.

No polite smile.

No excuse for her son.

She held a thick brown folder in her hand.

“Derek.””

He swallowed.

“Mom, this isn’t the time.””

She looked at my stomach.

Then at the money on the counter.

Then back at her son.

And something in her expression broke.

Not for him.

For me.

“Oh my God,” she whispered.

I hated that she looked surprised.

Because she had known.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

“Margaret,” I said quietly.

She stepped toward me.

“Claire, I…”

She stopped.

Maybe she didn’t know what to say.

Maybe there was no apology big enough.

Derek moved between us.

“Mom, give me the folder.””

“No.””

“Mom.””

“No, Derek.””

Her voice was firm.

The kind of voice a mother uses when she finally realizes her child has become someone she doesn’t recognize.

“You have spent years lying to everyone around you.””

His face tightened.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand more than you think.””

She placed the folder on the kitchen island.

“Open it.””

Derek didn’t move.

I looked at the folder.

“What is it?””

Margaret looked at me.

“Something I should have shown you a long time ago.””

My heart began pounding.

“What does that mean?””

She closed her eyes.

“I thought I could fix my son.””

Derek shook his head.

“Mom, stop.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“I protected you because I was afraid. I told myself you were just immature. I told myself you would grow up.””

She pointed at him.

“But you didn’t.””

The room became painfully quiet.

I looked between them.

“What’s inside?””

Margaret pushed the folder toward me.

“Open it, Claire.””

Derek suddenly grabbed my wrist.

Not hard.

But fast.

“Don’t.””

I stared at his hand.

Then at his face.

The fear there was undeniable.

“Why?””

He released me immediately.

“I just think you’re upset.””

“No.””

I looked at the folder.

“Now I want to see.””

Derek’s voice dropped.

“Claire, please.””

Please.

A word I had begged him to say for months.

Please stay.

Please come with me.

Please choose us.

But he had saved it for the moment he was about to lose control.

I opened the folder.

The first thing I saw was a photograph.

A young woman.

A baby.

And Derek.

My fingers went cold.

The picture was old.

Years old.

Derek was younger.

But there was no mistake.

I looked at Margaret.

“What is this?””

Her lips trembled.

“His first daughter.””

The world tilted.

“What?””

Derek closed his eyes.

“Mom.””

“No more lies.””

I looked at him.

“You have a daughter?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My hands shook as I flipped through the papers.

Birth certificate.

Medical records.

Court documents.

A custody agreement.

Every page was proof of a life Derek had hidden.

A life I knew nothing about.

“You told me you didn’t have children.””

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

His silence was unbearable.

“When she turned eighteen?””

Derek stepped forward.

“Claire, listen.””

“No.””

I backed away.

“You don’t get to explain this like it’s a misunderstanding.””

Margaret wiped her eyes.

“There’s more.””

I looked at her.

More.

That word had become terrifying.

“What more could there possibly be?””

She looked at Derek.

And he looked like he already knew.

“Your husband didn’t just hide a daughter from you.””

She opened another document.

“He hid the reason her mother disappeared.””

Derek’s face went white.

“Mom.””

But Margaret didn’t stop.

“He told you she abandoned him.””

I looked at Derek.

“You said she left.””

Margaret shook her head.

“She didn’t.””

The kitchen felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

“She died,” Margaret whispered.

I covered my mouth.

“What?””

Derek looked away.

“She died after an accident.””

“And you never told me?””

“I didn’t want you to look at me differently.””

I stared at him.

“Derek, you had an entire human being’s life hidden in a drawer.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Margaret picked up another document.

“This is why I came here today.””

“What is it?””

She hesitated.

And that hesitation scared me more than anything.

“Claire, before Derek married you, he made a promise.””

“To who?””

Margaret looked at me.

“To the woman he’s leaving you for.””

My blood ran cold.

“The mistress?””

Margaret nodded.

And then she said something that made my entire understanding of my marriage collapse.

“Because she isn’t a stranger.””

Derek stepped forward.

“Mom, stop talking.””

But Margaret was already crying.

“She is his first daughter’s guardian.””

I stared.

I couldn’t breathe.

The woman.

The woman who had been stealing my husband.

The woman he was choosing over his pregnant wife.

Was connected to the secret he had hidden from me for years.

Margaret reached into the folder and pulled out one final envelope.

“Claire, you need to see this before Derek takes anything else from you.””

I looked at the envelope.

“What is it?””

May you like

Margaret’s voice dropped.

“The truth about why he married you.””
