Chapter 7: The Night Everything Changed

The hallway went silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that comes right before something breaks.

Vanessa stood there holding Lily’s hand, her face pale and exhausted. She looked nothing like the woman I had imagined for months.

I had pictured someone cruel.

Someone confident.

Someone who enjoyed taking my husband away.

But the woman standing in front of me looked like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

Derek moved toward her.

“What are you doing here?””

Vanessa looked at him.

For the first time, I saw anger in her eyes.

Real anger.

Not jealousy.

Not resentment.

Something deeper.

“I’m done protecting you.””

Derek’s face tightened.

“Not here.””

“Yes. Here.””

She glanced at me.

“In front of her.””

My heart started racing.

Lily stood quietly beside Vanessa, holding her hand.

She looked around seven or eight years old.

Old enough to understand something was wrong.

Young enough to still believe adults knew what they were doing.

I looked at Derek.

“What happened that night?””

He didn’t answer.

That was becoming his signature.

Silence.

Avoidance.

Waiting for the storm to pass.

But this storm wasn’t passing.

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“The night Lily’s mother died…”

She stopped.

Derek interrupted.

“Vanessa, don’t.””

Her eyes snapped toward him.

“You don’t get to decide what gets hidden anymore.””

Margaret stepped closer.

“Tell her.””

Derek looked at his mother.

Even now, he was hoping someone would save him.

Nobody did.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Lily’s mother, Rachel, didn’t just disappear.””

I swallowed.

“I know she died in an accident.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked at Derek.

“But Derek wasn’t honest about what happened before that.””

The room felt colder.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa looked down at Lily.

Then back at me.

“Rachel was planning to leave him.””

I looked at Derek.

“Why?””

His jaw tightened.

“Because our marriage was falling apart.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“Because she found out about the money.””

I froze.

“What money?””

Derek looked away.

Margaret closed her eyes.

Like she already knew.

Vanessa continued.

“Rachel discovered Derek had been using Lily’s inheritance.””

My stomach dropped.

“Inheritance?””

Lily’s face changed.

She didn’t understand everything.

But she understood her name.

“Lily’s father left her money when she was born,” Vanessa said.

I looked at Derek.

“You used your daughter’s money?””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

“Yes,” Vanessa said.

Derek’s voice rose.

“That money was for expenses.””

“Expenses?””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You bought a car.””

Silence.

“You paid off debts.””

Silence.

“You used your own daughter’s future to save yourself.””

I stared at him.

The man who had told me he was struggling because he was unlucky.

The man who said life had been unfair to him.

He wasn’t unlucky.

He had been taking from everyone around him.

First his daughter.

Then me.

“Rachel found out,” Vanessa continued.

“She threatened to report him.””

Derek stepped forward.

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then tell the truth.””

He stayed quiet.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“She told him she was taking Lily and leaving.””

I looked at Derek.

“And?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“And that same night, Rachel died.””

The words hung there.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

I looked at Derek.

“You think he…”

I couldn’t finish.

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Relief came for half a second.

Then she continued.

“But he caused it.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Margaret covered her mouth.

Even she didn’t know.

Vanessa looked at Derek.

“Tell her.””

He whispered:

“I didn’t mean for it to happen.””

The sentence was worse than any confession.

My entire body went cold.

“What did you do?””

Derek sat down.

His face had lost all color.

“I followed her.””

“Why?””

“She took documents.””

“What documents?””

“The financial records.””

I stared.

“So you chased your wife because she had proof you stole from your daughter?””

He looked ashamed.

“I wanted to talk.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You wanted to stop her.””

Derek shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her voice broke.

“You called her seventeen times that night.””

I felt sick.

“Seventeen?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She was driving because she wanted to get away from him.””

Derek whispered:

“I didn’t know she was going to crash.””

Nobody responded.

Because maybe he hadn’t caused the accident.

But he had caused the fear.

He had created the situation.

And he had lived with the truth while letting everyone believe a different story.

“What happened after?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“After Rachel died, Derek convinced everyone she was unstable.””

My chest tightened.

“He blamed her.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Derek.

“You let people think she was the problem.””

He closed his eyes.

“I was scared.””

“You were scared?””

My voice rose.

“You let your daughter grow up believing her mother abandoned her because you were scared?””

He had no answer.

Lily suddenly spoke.

A tiny voice.

“Is that why Daddy never talks about Mommy?””

Everyone froze.

Derek looked at her.

“Lily…”

She looked confused.

“She used to say Daddy was angry.””

My heart broke.

Because she was carrying memories she shouldn’t have had to carry.

Vanessa knelt beside her.

“It’s okay.””

But it wasn’t.

Nothing about this was okay.

The nurse appeared at the doorway.

“Claire, you need to rest.””

I looked at Emma.

Then at Lily.

Two little girls.

Two daughters.

Both connected to the same man.

Both affected by his choices.

I turned toward Derek.

“I need you to leave.””

His face fell.

“Claire.””

“Leave.””

“Please.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t get to ask me for patience anymore.””

He stood there for several seconds.

Then slowly walked away.

But before he left, Lily reached for his hand.

And Derek stopped.

Because even after everything…

She still loved him.

That was the cruelest part.

A child could still love someone who failed her.

Derek looked down at her.

Then at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Regret.

Real regret.

But it came too late.

After he left, Vanessa sat beside me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“For what?””

“For being part of the lie.””

The answer surprised me.

“You knew about me?””

She nodded.

“I knew he was married.””

My expression hardened.

“And you still stayed.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

At least she didn’t pretend.

“I thought he loved me.””

I looked away.

“So did I.””

The silence between us was strange.

Two women who should have hated each other.

Both victims of the same man.

Then Vanessa reached into her bag.

“I brought this for you.””

She handed me a small envelope.

“What is it?””

Her face turned serious.

“Something Derek never knew I had.””

I opened it.

Inside was a copy of a letter.

A letter written by Rachel.

May you like

The first line made my hands shake.

*“If anything happens to me, Derek is not telling the truth.””*
