Chapter 6: The Promise That Destroyed Us

I stared at Vanessa’s message.

Not because it surprised me.

Because it confirmed something I had been afraid to admit.

Derek’s secrets weren’t random.

They weren’t mistakes.

They were choices.

Carefully made.

Repeated choices.

I looked at him.

“What did she mean?””

Derek didn’t speak.

“Derek.””

His eyes moved toward Margaret.

Then back to me.

“Claire, it’s complicated.””

I almost smiled.

There it was again.

The same sentence.

The same escape.

But I wasn’t the woman who accepted it anymore.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Almost frighteningly calm.

“You don’t get to hide behind that word anymore.””

He swallowed.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary.””

I looked at him.

“Mistakes are buying the wrong gift.””

My hand tightened around Emma’s blanket.

“Destroying people’s lives is a decision.””

The room went silent.

Derek sat down slowly.

“I was trying to protect Lily.””

I frowned.

“From what?””

He didn’t answer.

Margaret did.

“From the truth.””

I looked at her.

“What truth?””

Margaret took a deep breath.

“When Lily was a child, Derek wasn’t just absent.””

My stomach tightened.

“What are you saying?””

She looked at Derek.

“Tell her.””

He closed his eyes.

“I made a mistake.””

I waited.

“When Lily was six, I signed temporary guardianship papers.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought I needed time.””

“Time for what?””

His voice dropped.

“To fix my life.””

I felt anger rising.

“You left your daughter because your life was inconvenient?””

“No.””

“Yes.””

The word came out sharper than I expected.

Derek looked hurt.

But I didn’t care.

Not anymore.

“You did the same thing to me.””

His face changed.

“You walked away from me when I needed you most.””

Silence.

Margaret pulled another paper from the folder.

“This is the document he doesn’t want you to see.””

Derek stood immediately.

“Mom, don’t.””

She handed it to me.

I read the heading.

My hands went cold.

*Legal Guardianship Transfer Agreement.*

I looked at the date.

Three years before Derek met me.

Three years before our wedding.

Three years before he promised me forever.

“What is this?””

Margaret’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Derek legally gave up custody of Lily.””

I looked at him.

“You told me her mother left.””

“She did.””

“And you told me you fought to keep your daughter.””

“I tried.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You signed her away.””

He looked devastated.

“I was young.””

I laughed quietly.

“You were thirty-two.””

He had no answer.

I looked down at Emma.

Thirty-two.

Old enough to know.

Old enough to understand.

Old enough to choose.

The door opened.

A nurse walked in.

“Claire, congratulations. We just need the father’s signature for the birth registration.””

My eyes moved to Derek.

He looked at the papers.

Then at me.

And I saw it.

The fear.

Because this was different.

This wasn’t a marriage.

This wasn’t money.

This was a legal connection.

A responsibility.

A permanent record.

“Before he signs,” I said.

The nurse paused.

“I need a minute.””

She nodded and stepped outside.

Derek looked at me.

“Claire.””

“No.””

I held Emma closer.

“I need to know something.””

“What?””

“Did you marry me because you wanted a family?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I did.””

“Or because you wanted a woman who would make you look like you had one?””

The question destroyed him.

Because he knew.

Somewhere deep inside, he knew.

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

My voice softened slightly.

“You were.””

For the first time since this nightmare began, he didn’t defend himself.

He just sat there.

Broken.

A few minutes later, Margaret’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?””

I watched her listen.

Then slowly stand.

“What happened?””

She looked at Derek.

“It’s Vanessa.””

Derek stood.

“What about her?””

Margaret’s expression was unreadable.

“She’s at the hospital.””

My heart dropped.

“Why?””

Margaret looked at me.

“She wants to see Claire.””

I frowned.

“Why would she want to see me?””

Nobody answered.

Then Margaret whispered:

“Because Vanessa says Derek has been lying to both of you.””

Derek went pale.

“What did she tell you?””

Margaret looked at him.

“She said the affair wasn’t the real betrayal.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret looked toward the door.

And at that exact moment, Vanessa appeared in the hallway.

Standing there.

Holding Lily’s hand.

Her face was full of guilt.

She looked at me.

Then at Derek.

May you like

And whispered:

“Claire… you need to know what your husband did the night Lily’s mother died.””
