Chapter 9: The Final Truth
Nobody moved.
The image on the screen remained frozen.
Rebecca.
Mia’s biological mother.
The woman who had sat across from me in a coffee shop and claimed she wanted justice.
The woman who had told me she had spent years searching for the truth.
The woman who had warned me that someone close to us was hiding something.
My mind couldn’t process it.
“No,” Mia whispered.
She stepped closer to the laptop.
“That can’t be her.””
Ethan stared at the screen.
“I know what I saw.””
Claire sat down slowly.
For the first time since I had known her, she looked completely broken.
Not defensive.
Not afraid.
Broken.
“She lied,” Claire whispered.
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
Claire shook her head.
“Not everything.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Of course.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“Every time we find the truth, there’s another secret underneath.””
Claire lowered her eyes.
And I hated that I understood.
Because that was exactly what my family had become.
A house built on locked doors.
I turned back to the video.
“Watch the rest.””
Nobody spoke.
The video continued.
The parking lot was empty except for Daniel’s car.
Rebecca walked toward it.
She looked around nervously.
Then she opened the hood.
My hands tightened.
Mia covered her mouth.
“She did something to the car.””
Ethan looked at Claire.
“Mom…”
Claire shook her head.
“I didn’t know.””
Rebecca closed the hood.
Then Daniel appeared.
The quality was poor, but his face was visible.
He looked angry.
They argued.
Even without sound, it was obvious.
Then Daniel pointed toward the car.
Rebecca started crying.
A few minutes later, Daniel drove away.
The video ended.
Nobody breathed.
Then Lily spoke.
“But that doesn’t prove she caused the accident.””
She was right.
For once, Lily was the voice of reason.
A video showed Rebecca near the car.
But it didn’t show what happened after.
I looked at the flash drive.
“There has to be more.””
I searched through the files.
There were dozens.
Photos.
Documents.
Audio recordings.
And then I found a folder named:
*FOR THE CHILDREN.*
Inside were three files.
The first was a letter.
The second was an audio recording.
The third was a video.
I opened the letter.
It was from Daniel.
But this time, it wasn’t addressed to Claire.
It was addressed to Ethan, Mia, and Lily.
My heart broke before I even read it.
*“If you are seeing this, then I am no longer able to explain everything myself.””*
Daniel wrote that he had made terrible choices.
He admitted hurting people.
He admitted destroying trust.
But he said there was one thing he never did.
He never stopped loving his children.
Then came the part that changed everything.
*“Rebecca did not try to kill me. She was trying to stop me from making another mistake.””*
Everyone looked confused.
I opened the audio recording.
Daniel’s voice filled the room.
“If you’re hearing this, I need you to understand what happened.””
A pause.
“I found out Rebecca had been hiding Mia from me.””
Mia froze.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“She believed I would abandon her like I abandoned Ethan.””
The room became silent.
Rebecca’s actions suddenly had another meaning.
Daniel wasn’t meeting her to fight.
He was confronting her.
The recording continued.
“She sabotaged my car, but not to hurt me. She wanted to stop me from leaving before we talked.””
I looked at the screen.
Then came the sentence nobody expected.
“But someone else used that moment.””
The audio crackled.
“Someone else finished what Rebecca started.””
My heartbeat increased.
Daniel continued.
“The person who damaged my brakes was not Rebecca.””
The recording stopped for several seconds.
Then his voice became quieter.
“It was someone who knew exactly where I would be.””
The room felt colder.
I looked at Claire.
She looked terrified.
The final video file opened.
This one was recorded inside Daniel’s house.
A hidden camera.
The date was one week before his death.
Daniel sat across from someone.
Someone whose face wasn’t visible.
But the voice was clear.
“Give me the papers, Daniel.””
My body went still.
Because I knew that voice.
Everyone did.
It was impossible.
The person in the video was saying:
“You’re going to ruin everything.””
Daniel replied:
“You already ruined enough.””
The person stood.
Then turned slightly.
Not enough to show their face.
But enough to reveal something.
A bracelet.
A small silver bracelet.
I looked at Claire.
She covered her mouth.
Because she recognized it.
“Who?”” I asked.
Claire whispered:
“No…”
“Who is it?””
She looked at Lily.
Then Mia.
Then Ethan.
And finally me.
“The bracelet belonged to my sister.””
I frowned.
“Your sister?””
Claire nodded slowly.
“The woman who raised Lily before she disappeared.””
My stomach dropped.
“What are you saying?””
Claire’s face went pale.
“She wasn’t missing.””
Nobody spoke.
“She was alive.””
A terrible silence filled the room.
“Claire,” Ethan said, “who was she?””
Claire looked at the screen.
And whispered:
“Daniel’s first wife.””
I stared.
The woman everyone thought had left.
The woman who had taken Lily away.
The woman who had been forgotten.
She had been alive all along.
And she had been watching.
The front door suddenly opened.
We all turned.
A woman stood there.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
Lily immediately stepped back.
Because she knew that face.
“Mama?””
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m sorry.””
Nobody moved.
The woman looked at the laptop.
Then at Claire.
Then at me.
“I came because you finally found the truth.””
I could barely speak.
“Who are you?””
She swallowed.
“My name is Vanessa.””
Lily started crying.
“My mother?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
May you like
Then she looked at the screen.
“And I’m the person who knows why Daniel really died.””
