Chapter 8: The Person Behind Everything
I drove home faster than I should have.
My mind was racing.
Someone inside my house.
Someone close.
Someone who knew what I was discovering.
When I entered the driveway, I saw Claire’s car.
She was home.
For a moment, I wondered if I should call the police.
But then I remembered something.
The truth needed to come from her.
I walked inside.
Claire was sitting in the living room.
Waiting.
“You met Rebecca.””
I stopped.
“How do you know?””
She didn’t answer.
And that silence told me enough.
“You’re still hiding things.””
Claire looked exhausted.
“I’m tired.””
“So am I.””
She looked at me.
“I never wanted anyone to get hurt.””
“But people did.””
“I know.””
“Daniel died.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“Ethan lost years with his father.””
“I know.””
“Mia grew up believing a lie.””
“I know.””
I slammed my hand against the table.
“Then why?””
Claire broke down.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Fear doesn’t explain everything.””
She looked at me.
“No.””
Then she whispered:
“Jealousy does.””
The word hung in the room.
Claire admitted something I never expected.
She had always hated that Daniel had another family before her.
She hated Rebecca.
She hated that Ethan carried Daniel’s face.
She hated that Mia was proof of a life she could never have.
And instead of dealing with that pain…
She buried it.
She manipulated it.
But there was still one question.
“The accident.””
Claire became silent.
“Claire.””
She looked away.
“I didn’t cause it.””
I watched her carefully.
“But you know who did.””
Her silence lasted too long.
Then the front door opened.
We both turned.
Ethan walked in.
Behind him stood Mia.
And between them was someone I had never expected.
Lily.
“What are you doing here?”” I asked.
Lily looked at Claire.
“I found something.””
She held a small flash drive.
My heart sank.
“Where did you get that?””
“In Mom’s room.””
Claire stood.
“Lily, don’t.””
But Lily stepped back.
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You lied to everyone.””
She handed me the drive.
“I was looking for old pictures.””
She looked at Claire.
“I found this hidden behind the closet wall.””
I plugged it into the laptop.
A video file appeared.
Recorded years ago.
The date was the night Daniel died.
The video began.
A parking lot.
A dark figure walking toward Daniel’s car.
Then the person turned.
My entire body went cold.
Because I recognized the face.
Ethan recognized it too.
Mia covered her mouth.
And Claire whispered the name:
“No…”
The video showed the person who had destroyed our family.
The person who had spent years hiding the truth.
And then, from the laptop speakers, came a voice.
A voice none of us expected.
“I’m sorry.””
The screen froze.
But the face remained visible.
It wasn’t Claire.
It wasn’t Rebecca.
It wasn’t anyone I had suspected.
It was someone who had been standing beside us the entire time.
Someone we had trusted.
Someone who had helped uncover the first lie…
Only to hide the biggest one.
And then Ethan said the words that made my blood turn cold.
“Dad…”
May you like
He stared at the screen.
“That’s Mia’s mother.””
