Chapter 2: The Hidden Footage

The next morning, I couldn’t stop thinking about the message.

I asked Ethan where it came from.

He said he didn’t know.

I asked Claire.

She said she had no idea.

But the way she answered was wrong.

People who are innocent usually look confused.

Claire looked afraid.

For the first time in twelve years, I wondered if I had married someone I never truly knew.

That afternoon, I found my younger daughter, Mia, sitting on the back porch.

Mia was fifteen.

Quiet.

Observant.

The kind of person who noticed everything but rarely spoke.

“You seem worried,” I said.

She shrugged.

“I’ve been worried for a while.””

I sat beside her.

“About what?””

She stared at the garden.

“About Lily.””

My stomach tightened.

“What about her?””

Mia hesitated.

“Can I show you something?””

She pulled out her phone.

“I didn’t know if I should.””

The video loaded.

At first, I saw nothing unusual.

It was a recording from inside the living room.

Then I saw Lily walking in.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t scared.

She was smiling.

I watched as Lily looked directly at the camera.

“Mom, are you sure this will work?””

My heart stopped.

Claire walked into the frame.

“Yes.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

On the video, Claire looked completely different from the woman who had stood in front of me pretending to be shocked.

“What if Dad believes Ethan?”” Lily asked.

“He won’t,” Claire replied.

“Why?””

“Because people always believe the person who looks hurt.””

I stopped breathing.

Mia looked at me.

“I found the camera yesterday.””

“Where?””

“In the bookshelf. Lily put it there.””

My hands started shaking.

The video continued.

Lily smiled.

“I hate him, Mom.””

Claire sighed.

“I know.””

“He took everything.””

“You mean your father’s attention?””

“Yes.””

I turned away from the screen.

My own house.

My own family.

A trap.

“How long have you known?”” I asked Mia.

She looked down.

“Only since yesterday.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Mom always says nobody will believe me over Lily.””

That sentence hurt more than anything else.

Because I realized something terrible.

There had been signs.

Small signs.

Moments I ignored.

The missing jewelry accusation against Ethan last year.

The broken vase Lily blamed on him.

The argument where Claire immediately defended Lily without asking questions.

I had always thought Ethan was patient because he was mature.

Maybe he was patient because he was tired.

I watched the rest of the video.

Then I heard something that made my entire body go cold.

Lily said:

“Mom, what about the other thing?””

Claire froze.

“What other thing?””

“The secret you promised you would never tell Dad.””

The video ended.

I looked at Mia.

“What secret?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I stood up.

I needed answers.

When I entered the house, Claire was in the kitchen.

She looked at my face.

And immediately knew.

“You saw it.””

Not a question.

A confession.

I placed the phone on the counter.

“Explain.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Please let me explain.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more explanations without the truth.””

Claire sat down.

“I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

She covered her face.

“The reason Lily hates Ethan…”

She paused.

Then whispered:

“Is because she thinks Ethan knows something about her real father.””

I stared at her.

“Her real father?””

Claire looked toward the hallway.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Ethan’s biological father and Lily’s biological father are connected.””

I felt the room spin.

“What are you talking about?””

Before Claire could answer, the front door opened.

Ethan walked in.

He heard the last sentence.

And his face changed.

“Dad…”

May you like

He looked at Claire.

“You finally told him?””
