Chapter 5: The Secret Mia Carried

The envelope stayed on my desk for three days.

I told myself I was waiting for the right moment.

The truth was, I was afraid.

After everything I had uncovered about Claire, every hidden conversation, every carefully buried secret, I wasn’t sure I had the strength to discover another one.

But the words on that paper followed me everywhere.

*Ask Claire about Mia.*

My youngest daughter.

The quiet one.

The one who had saved Ethan from a lie that could have destroyed his future.

The one who had been brave enough to show me the camera footage when everyone else was protecting themselves.

I kept wondering the same question.

Why would someone leave a message about her?

On Friday evening, I found Claire sitting alone in the backyard.

The sun was setting behind the trees, painting the sky orange.

For a moment, she looked like the woman I married years ago.

The woman who used to laugh while cooking dinner.

The woman who held my hand during my father’s funeral.

The woman I trusted completely.

Then I remembered the secrets.

I walked toward her.

She looked up.

“You found something.””

It wasn’t a question.

I sat across from her.

“Someone left me a note.””

Her face changed instantly.

“What kind of note?””

I placed the paper on the table.

The second Claire read it, the color disappeared from her face.

“Mia,” she whispered.

I leaned forward.

“What does it mean?””

Claire looked away.

“Nothing.””

I laughed quietly.

“Claire, we are past that.””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t want you to find out like this.””

“Find out what?””

Her hands started trembling.

“Mia isn’t…”

She stopped.

The silence became unbearable.

“Mia isn’t what?””

Claire looked at me.

And then she said:

“Mia isn’t your biological daughter.””

The world seemed to go quiet.

I stared at her.

I waited for her to take it back.

She didn’t.

“What did you say?””

Claire wiped her face.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

“When, Claire?””

“I don’t know.””

I stood up.

“No. You don’t get to say you don’t know.””

My voice rose.

“You let me raise a child believing she was mine.””

“She is yours.””

“That’s not the point.””

Claire looked hurt.

“She loves you.””

“I love her.””

“Then what changes?””

Everything.

Nothing.

Both answers existed at the same time.

I sat back down.

“Who is her father?””

Claire looked toward the house.

“Mia was born before I met you.””

I froze.

“What?””

She nodded.

“I was pregnant when we started dating.””

I felt my heart pounding.

“You told me she was mine.””

“I thought she could be.””

“Thought?””

Claire began crying.

“Her biological father was Daniel.””

The name hit me like a punch.

Again.

Daniel.

The man whose mistakes had already damaged Ethan and Lily’s lives.

The man who had somehow remained connected to my family long after he disappeared.

“You knew?””

“I found out when Mia was two.””

“And you never told me?””

Claire shook her head.

“I was going to.””

“When?””

Again, silence.

That was the answer.

I walked inside.

I needed air.

I needed to understand how my entire marriage could be built on missing pieces.

In the living room, Mia was sitting on the couch doing homework.

She looked up.

“Dad?””

I stopped.

Because she smiled at me the same way she always had.

Not because of blood.

Because I was her father.

“Can I ask you something?””

She closed her notebook.

“Sure.””

“Did you know?””

Her expression changed.

Slowly.

Not surprise.

Fear.

“Mia.””

She looked down.

“Mom told me not to say anything.””

My chest tightened.

“How long?””

“A few months.””

“A few months?””

She nodded.

“I found the documents when I was looking for my birth certificate.””

I sat beside her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought you would stop loving me.””

That sentence broke something inside me.

I pulled her into a hug.

“Never.””

“But I’m not your real daughter.””

I held her tighter.

“Don’t ever say that.””

She cried into my shoulder.

“You’re the only dad I’ve ever had.””

Behind us, Claire stood in the doorway.

Crying.

But this time, I didn’t know if her tears were guilt or sadness.

Maybe both.

That night, I searched through old files.

I needed to know the truth.

And I found something unexpected.

A medical document.

A DNA test.

But it wasn’t between Mia and Daniel.

It was between Mia and Ethan.

The result date was six months before Ethan found out about his own father.

My hands shook as I read the conclusion.

*“Biological relationship confirmed: siblings.””*

I stared at the paper.

Mia wasn’t just connected to Daniel.

She was connected to Ethan.

Which meant…

May you like

There was something about Daniel’s disappearance that none of us knew.

And someone had been trying very hard to keep it hidden.
