Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Family
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Rain tapped against the windows.
The refrigerator hummed.
The entire house felt like it was waiting for someone to finally say the truth.
“Ethan,” I said slowly, “what does she mean?””
He looked at Claire.
She looked away.
That told me everything.
He knew.
“I found out last year,” Ethan said.
My chest tightened.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I tried.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
His eyes filled with frustration.
“Because Mom begged me not to.””
I turned toward Claire.
“You made my son keep a secret from me?””
Claire started crying.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””
“Then how was it supposed to happen?””
Nobody answered.
Ethan walked to the table and sat down.
“My biological father, Daniel, wasn’t just some guy who left when I was little.””
I listened carefully.
“He was Lily’s father too.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Claire.
“You told me Lily’s father disappeared before you met me.””
She nodded.
“I lied.””
The word felt heavier than I expected.
“Why?””
Claire wiped her tears.
“Because I was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
She looked at Ethan.
“Daniel was married when I met him.””
My stomach dropped.
“You had an affair?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The truth finally had a voice.
And it was ugly.
“I was young,” she whispered.
“I believed his promises. He told me he would leave his wife.””
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
“And Ethan’s mother?””
“She found out.””
I looked at Ethan.
He looked away.
“I was three years old when everything happened,” he said.
“I don’t remember him much.””
Claire continued.
“When Daniel’s wife discovered the affair, she took Lily and left. Daniel disappeared from both families.””
“And then you met me.””
“Yes.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe my life had been built on someone else’s secret.
“So Lily knows?””
Claire nodded.
“She found out from an old box of documents.””
“And she blamed Ethan?””
“She thought he knew.””
Ethan stood up.
“I didn’t know anything.””
Lily suddenly appeared at the doorway.
Nobody noticed her walk in.
She had heard everything.
“Liar.””
I turned.
“Lily.””
Her face was full of anger.
“You always choose him.””
“No,” I said.
“I chose the truth.””
She looked at the phone on the table.
“You recorded me?””
Mia stepped forward.
“You set everything up.””
Lily’s expression changed.
For the first time, she looked scared.
“Mom?””
Claire stood.
“Lily…”
“No. Tell him.””
Her voice cracked.
“Tell him why you really wanted Ethan gone.””
I looked at Claire.
She didn’t answer.
Lily started crying.
“Because she said if Ethan wasn’t here anymore, Dad would finally see me as his only child.””
I felt something break inside me.
Not anger.
Disappointment.
A child had been manipulated.
But an adult had allowed it.
I looked at Claire.
“You encouraged this?””
“No.””
“Then what did you do?””
Claire remained silent.
And that silence was the answer.
The next morning, I went through old files in my office.
I found bank records.
Messages.
Documents.
Things Claire had hidden from me.
Then I found a folder with Ethan’s name on it.
Inside was a letter.
A letter written six years earlier.
The signature at the bottom made my hands shake.
It was from Daniel.

And the first sentence said:
*“If anything happens to me, tell Ethan the truth about why I left…”*
