Chapter 7: The Woman Who Returned

For twelve years, I believed I knew the beginning of my family’s story.

I was wrong.

There was an entire chapter hidden from me.

A woman I had never met.

A woman connected to Daniel.

A woman connected to Mia.

A woman who knew the truth.

Claire gave me her name.

Rebecca.

She was Daniel’s first love before everything became complicated.

According to Claire, Rebecca and Daniel had a daughter together years before he became involved with anyone else.

But Rebecca disappeared after Mia was born.

Or at least, that was what Claire claimed.

I didn’t know what to believe anymore.

The next day, Rebecca contacted me.

She asked to meet.

A small coffee shop.

No drama.

No cameras.

Just the truth.

When I saw her walk in, I understood immediately why Claire had been afraid.

Rebecca wasn’t angry.

She was calm.

And calm people often carried the heaviest secrets.

“You’re Mia’s father figure,” she said.

I nodded.

“I raised her.””

She smiled sadly.

“Then you’re the only real father she has known.””

I studied her.

“Why did you leave?””

Her expression changed.

“I didn’t.””

The answer was immediate.

“I was told you wanted nothing to do with her.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who told you that?””

“Daniel.””

I froze.

“Daniel lied?””

She nodded.

“But later I found out he was manipulated.””

“By who?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“Claire.””

I felt my hands tighten around my coffee cup.

“Explain.””

Rebecca took a deep breath.

“Daniel wanted to leave everything behind and start over. He wanted to be honest. He wanted to tell you about Mia.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

“Because Claire threatened him.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

I remembered the secrets.

The lies.

The years of hiding.

Rebecca continued.

“She told Daniel that if he exposed everything, she would make sure he never saw any of his children again.””

My chest tightened.

“Do you have proof?””

Rebecca nodded.

She pulled out her phone.

“I kept this because I knew one day the truth would matter.””

She played a recording.

Daniel’s voice.

Older.

Tired.

“If anything happens to me, I need someone to tell my children I loved them.””

Then Claire’s voice.

“You should have thought about that before ruining my life.””

The recording ended.

I sat there frozen.

Rebecca looked at me.

“There’s more.””

“What?””

“The accident wasn’t an accident.””

My blood ran cold.

“What are you saying?””

She lowered her voice.

“Daniel’s car was tampered with.””

I stared at her.

“Who did it?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“I don’t know.””

Then she looked directly at me.

“But Daniel believed he knew.””

“Who?””

Before she answered, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What is it?””

She stood quickly.

“We need to leave.””

“Why?””

She showed me the message.

One line.

*Stop digging, or the next secret buried will be you.*

I looked around the coffee shop.

Nobody seemed unusual.

But suddenly, everyone looked suspicious.

Rebecca grabbed her bag.

“There’s one more thing you need to know.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“The person who sent that message…”

May you like

She paused.

“…is someone inside your house.””
