Chapter 9: The Warehouse of Secrets
"Nobody is going anywhere alone.""
Marcus's voice was firm.
Ethan stood beside the library desk, holding his phone.
"He's threatening you.""
"And I'm not going to let you walk into a trap.""
Arthur took the original trust documents and placed them inside the metal box.
"Richard wants these papers. That means they're his weakness.""
Daniel's recorded image remained frozen on Ethan's phone.
Marcus looked at his brother.
"Can we contact the police?""
Arthur nodded.
"We should. But we need to make sure they don't send information to anyone connected to Richard.""
The police officer assigned to the property approached.
"Mr. Hale, what's happening?""
Marcus showed him the message.
The officer studied it.
"We'll need to notify our supervisor.""
Arthur immediately stepped forward.
"Not yet.""
The officer frowned.
"Excuse me?""
"Richard may have someone inside the department.""
"That's a serious accusation.""
"I have evidence.""
Arthur opened his notebook.
He showed the officer a list of names and payment references.
The officer examined it.
His expression changed.
"Where did you get this?""
"From the investigation that nearly got me killed.""
The officer looked toward Marcus.
"Mr. Hale, I need to verify these details before taking action.""
Marcus nodded.
"Do it.""
Ethan looked at his phone.
Another message arrived.
*23 MINUTES.*
He turned to his father.
"We're running out of time.""
Marcus shook his head.
"We're not giving him the documents.""
"Then what happens to Daniel?""
Arthur looked at Ethan.
"We find another way.""
Ethan glanced at the metal box.
His mother had left those documents to protect him.
Now Richard was using them to threaten his family.
He looked at Marcus.
"There's something we haven't considered.""
"What?""
"The security system.""
Marcus frowned.
"What about it?""
"The warehouse message came with a video. If Richard can send us footage from that location, he has a camera or recording device there.""
Arthur nodded slowly.
"And?""
"Maybe we can use it to identify the warehouse.""
Ethan opened the video details.
He examined the background.
A yellow industrial sign was visible behind the chair.
He zoomed in.
The letters were blurred, but the first word appeared to be NORTH.
Daniel approached the screen.
"Northside Industrial Park.""
Marcus looked at him.
"How do you know?""
"Richard owns a storage facility there.""
Arthur took the phone.
"Which building?""
Daniel studied the image.
"The old textile warehouse. Building twelve.""
Ethan checked the clock.
11:42 p.m.
"Then that's where we're going.""
Marcus shook his head.
"We're not walking into a building with an armed man.""
Ethan looked at him.
"Then we don't walk in.""
Arthur smiled faintly.
"Your mother would have liked that answer.""
They spent the next few minutes studying the building layout using an old site plan Daniel had saved.
The warehouse had two main entrances.
A loading bay faced the road.
A smaller service entrance opened into the rear storage area.
The office section had a separate staircase leading to the second floor.
Arthur pointed at the plan.
"Richard used to keep confidential records in the upper office.""
Marcus frowned.
"Why?""
"Because the warehouse was registered under a subsidiary. Nobody thought to look there.""
Ethan traced the building outline.
"Can we access the security system?""
Daniel nodded.
"Possibly. Richard's company used the same contractor as ours.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Can you get us inside?""
"I can try.""
Arthur took the metal box.
"I'm going.""
Marcus immediately objected.
"Absolutely not.""
Arthur looked at him.
"Richard expects me to be dead. That gives us an advantage.""
"He's already tried to kill you once.""
"And he failed.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Not again.""
Arthur placed a hand on his brother's shoulder.
"You spent two years believing you had lost me. Don't make the mistake of losing me again because you're afraid.""
Marcus looked away.
Ethan stepped forward.
"I'm coming too.""
Marcus turned.
"No.""
"Dad.""
"No, Ethan.""
"Richard wants the documents because of me. He's threatening you because of me. I won't sit here while someone else gets hurt.""
Marcus stared at his son.
Then he nodded reluctantly.
"Fine. But you stay behind me.""
Arthur looked at both brothers.
"Then we move.""
At 11:54 p.m., they reached Northside Industrial Park.
The warehouse stood at the end of a deserted access road.
A single security light illuminated the loading bay.
No cars were visible.
Daniel checked the building's exterior camera.
"Someone disabled the main system.""
Arthur looked toward the office windows.
"That means they're expecting us.""
Marcus held the metal box.
Ethan noticed his father's hand trembling.
"Are you okay?""
Marcus gave a small nod.
"I'm thinking about your mother.""
Ethan looked at him.
"What about her?""
Marcus stared at the warehouse.
"She used to say that secrets don't disappear. They just wait for someone brave enough to open the door.""
Ethan swallowed.
"Then let's open it.""
They approached the service entrance.
It was unlocked.
Inside, the warehouse was dark except for a strip of fluorescent lights near the upper office.
A chair stood in the middle of the concrete floor.
Someone had placed a glass of water on a nearby table.
Ethan looked around.
"Where is Daniel?""
A speaker crackled overhead.
Richard's voice filled the warehouse.
"Right on time.""
Marcus looked up.
"Show yourself.""
A door opened above them.
Richard appeared on the second-floor balcony.
He wore a navy suit and carried a small remote control.
"Marcus. It's been a difficult evening.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"You shot at me.""
Richard smiled.
"That wasn't personal.""
"You framed my son.""
"That was business.""
Ethan moved beside his father.
"Where is Daniel?""
Richard pointed toward the far side of the warehouse.
A metal door opened.
Two men brought Daniel into the light.
His hands were tied.
His face was bruised.
Ethan stepped forward.
"Daniel!""
Richard raised the remote.
"Careful.""
One of the men pressed a gun against Daniel's back.
Marcus held up the metal box.
"Let him go.""
Richard smiled.
"First, the documents.""
Arthur stepped forward.
Richard's expression changed.
For the first time, his confidence cracked.
"Arthur.""
"Hello, Richard.""
Richard stared.
Then he laughed.
"You're supposed to be dead.""
"I heard.""
Richard looked toward Vanessa.
She appeared on the balcony beside him.
She wore a black coat and carried a folder.
Marcus stared at her.
"How could you?""
Vanessa looked down.
"Don't make this emotional.""
"You helped him try to kill my brother.""
"I helped myself survive.""
Marcus shook his head.
"You had everything.""
"No, Marcus. I had a comfortable house and a husband who never loved me the way he loved his dead wife.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"You're blaming my mother for this?""
Vanessa looked directly at him.
"Your mother left you everything. Everything. Even after she died, she still controlled this family.""
"She was my mother.""
"And I was supposed to spend the rest of my life living in her shadow?""
Marcus's voice became cold.
"You didn't have to live in anyone's shadow. You chose to destroy us.""
Richard interrupted.
"Enough. We didn't come here for a family reunion.""
He extended his hand.
"The documents.""
Marcus lifted the box.
"Let Daniel go first.""
Richard shook his head.
"You're in no position to negotiate.""
"Then neither am I.""
Marcus opened the box.
He removed the original trust document.
Richard's eyes locked onto it.
"Give it to me.""
Marcus held it out.
But Arthur suddenly spoke.
"Before you take it, Richard, there's something you should know.""
Richard turned.
"What?""
"The document isn't the only copy.""
Richard frowned.
Arthur smiled.
"Your entire acquisition plan is already recorded.""
Richard laughed.
"By whom?""
Arthur pointed toward the ceiling.
A small red light blinked.
Ethan looked up.
A camera.
The warehouse security system had been active all along.
Richard's expression changed.
Daniel suddenly twisted away from the man holding him.
He slammed his shoulder into the gunman's chest.
The weapon fell.
A shot rang out.
The warehouse lights flickered.
Ethan ducked behind a metal storage rack.
Marcus dropped the box.
Arthur rushed toward the staircase.
Vanessa screamed.
Richard pulled a gun from beneath his jacket.
"Nobody moves!""
Everything stopped.
Richard pointed the weapon at Marcus.
Then he looked at Ethan.
"You've caused enough trouble.""
Ethan slowly stood.
"Let him go.""
Richard laughed.
"You're still trying to be a hero?""
"No. I'm trying to make sure you don't get away with this.""
Richard's finger tightened around the trigger.
Vanessa stepped between them.
"Richard, wait.""
He looked at her.
"What?""
"Don't shoot him.""
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Move.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"We need the trust documents.""
"We don't need anything anymore.""
"Richard!""
He raised the gun toward her.
Marcus shouted.
"Vanessa, get down!""
A gunshot exploded.
Vanessa fell.
Ethan rushed toward her.
Richard turned and ran toward the upper office.
Arthur pursued him.
Marcus dropped beside Vanessa.
Blood spread across her coat.
"Vanessa!""
She gasped.
"Marcus...""
He pressed his hand against the wound.
"Stay with me.""
Ethan knelt beside her.
"Who shot you?""
Vanessa's eyes moved toward the staircase.
"Richard.""
Marcus looked up.
Richard had reached the upper office.
He opened a metal cabinet and pulled out a thick folder.
Arthur appeared behind him.
They struggled.
The folder fell.
Papers scattered across the floor.
Ethan heard another gunshot.
Then Arthur's voice.
"Marcus! The documents!""
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
Ethan followed his gaze.
On the floor beside the fallen folder was a photograph.
It showed Marcus's first wife.
But this time, she wasn't alone.
She was standing beside Richard.
And on the back, someone had written a date.
The date of her death.
Ethan picked it up.
He turned it over.
A handwritten sentence appeared beneath the date.
*She knew who would kill her.*
Ethan looked at his father.
"Dad.""
Marcus turned.
Ethan held up the photograph.
"Look at this.""
Marcus stared at the writing.
His face changed.
"No.""
Ethan looked toward the staircase.
"Did you know?""
Marcus shook his head.
"Your mother...""
He couldn't finish.
Then Arthur shouted from upstairs.
"Marcus! Get up here!""
Ethan ran toward the staircase.
At the top, he found Richard on the floor, bleeding from a cut above his eye.
Arthur stood over him.
But he wasn't looking at Richard.
He was staring at the papers scattered around the office.
One document had been marked with a red circle.
It contained a payment authorization from seventeen years earlier.
The recipient's name was Richard Cole.
The amount was five hundred thousand dollars.
And the authorization carried Marcus's signature.
Arthur looked at his younger brother.
"Marcus.""
Marcus climbed the stairs.
Arthur pointed at the page.
"Do you remember signing this?""
Marcus stared.
Then he whispered:
"That's the payment I made the night your mother died.""
Ethan felt his heart stop.
Marcus looked at the date again.
Then at the photograph.
"She didn't die in an accident.""
Arthur shook his head.
"No.""
Marcus looked at Richard.
"Tell me who ordered it.""
Richard laughed weakly.
"You really want to know?""
Marcus grabbed his collar.
"Who?""
Richard looked toward Vanessa, who was being treated downstairs.
Then he smiled.
"Ask your son.""
Ethan froze.
"What?""
Richard's smile widened.
"Your mother didn't die because of me, Marcus.""
May you like
He looked directly at Ethan.
"She died because someone in this family made a deal with me.""
