Chapter 6: The Inheritance Nobody Told Me About
Ethan stared at the document.
His mother's signature looked exactly as he remembered it from birthday cards and school permission slips.
He traced the edge of the paper with one finger.
"How long have you known?""
Marcus stood silently.
"How long, Dad?""
"Since the day she died.""
Ethan stepped backward.
The room seemed to shrink around him.
"Seventeen years?""
Marcus nodded.
"You knew I owned part of the company?""
"I knew your mother had left you something.""
"Something?""
Marcus looked at the document.
"She left you her shares.""
"Half the company?""
"Originally, yes.""
Ethan laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
"And you let me grow up thinking I was just your son. You never told me I was the legal owner of half your business.""
Marcus's eyes filled.
"I didn't want you growing up thinking about money.""
"I wasn't thinking about money! I was thinking about my mother!""
Vanessa sat down on the nearest chair.
She looked almost bored.
"Your father had a reason.""
Ethan turned toward her.
"Stay out of this.""
"Your mother was preparing to change the ownership structure before she died.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
Vanessa continued.
"She wanted her shares transferred into a trust. She wanted independent control. She didn't trust your father anymore.""
Ethan looked at Marcus.
"Is that true?""
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Your mother believed I was taking unnecessary risks with the company.""
"Were you?""
Marcus looked down.
"Yes.""
Ethan waited.
His father finally continued.
"Years ago, I made an investment that nearly destroyed the business. I borrowed against company assets without telling her. When she found out, we argued.""
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"An argument that lasted months.""
Marcus looked at her.
"You weren't there.""
"I know enough.""
Ethan turned back to his father.
"What happened to her shares after she died?""
Marcus took a long breath.
"They were placed in a trust. I was appointed temporary administrator until you turned twenty-five.""
Ethan frowned.
"I'm twenty-four.""
"Your birthday is in three months.""
"So what happens then?""
Marcus looked toward Daniel.
Daniel answered carefully.
"The trust becomes independently controlled. Ethan receives voting authority over the shares, including the right to challenge certain corporate transactions.""
Ethan looked down at the document.
"Meaning I could stop the sale.""
Daniel nodded.
"Exactly.""
Vanessa stood abruptly.
"That's not how it works.""
Daniel turned.
"It is.""
"You're not a lawyer.""
"No. But I've worked with the legal team for fifteen years.""
Vanessa approached the table.
"Those shares were supposed to remain under Marcus's administration.""
"Until Ethan turns twenty-five.""
"That was never the intention.""
Daniel looked at her.
"It's written in the trust.""
Vanessa's face hardened.
Ethan suddenly understood why she wanted him gone.
If he remained in the house, he could discover the documents.
If he learned about the trust, he could stop the transfer.
And if Marcus believed Ethan was a thief and an attacker, he might agree to sign away control without ever consulting his son.
Ethan looked at the transfer agreement.
"How much of the company were they planning to sell?""
Daniel opened his folder.
"Seventy-two percent of the voting rights.""
"That's nearly everything.""
"Yes.""
"And the buyer?""
"Northbridge.""
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
"Who owns Northbridge?""
Daniel hesitated.
"That's where things become complicated.""
He opened a company registry report.
The document showed a chain of ownership through three separate holding companies.
At the end was a name.
Richard Cole.
Marcus stared.
"Richard owns Northbridge?""
"Indirectly.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Richard is an investor. There's nothing illegal about that.""
Daniel shook his head.
"He used a nominee director to conceal his ownership.""
"Prove it.""
Daniel placed another document on the table.
"Here.""
Vanessa read the page.
Her face changed.
It was a bank transfer authorization from the nominee company to an account controlled by Richard.
The date matched the formation of Northbridge.
Ethan looked at his father.
"So Richard planned to buy the company using a company he secretly owned?""
"Yes," Daniel said.
"With our own money?""
Daniel nodded.
Marcus sat down heavily.
For years, Richard had attended family dinners.
He had brought Ethan birthday presents.
He had stood beside Marcus at company celebrations.
He had even given a speech at Ethan's mother's memorial.
And all that time, he had been preparing to take the company.
Marcus looked toward Vanessa.
"Did you know about the trust?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
"Did you know Ethan would receive voting control in three months?""
She finally spoke.
"Of course I knew.""
Ethan felt something cold settle in his stomach.
"Then everything tonight was about stopping me.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"Everything tonight was about protecting what belongs to me.""
Marcus stood.
"Nothing belongs to you.""
She laughed.
"You promised me a future in this company.""
"I promised you a home. A family.""
"You promised me security.""
"And you tried to steal my business?""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"Your business? You wouldn't even have a business without your first wife.""
The words landed like a slap.
Marcus took a step toward her.
"Don't.""
Vanessa continued.
"She built the original company. She knew the suppliers. She negotiated the first contracts. She created the relationships that made you successful.""
Marcus's face tightened.
"And you think that gives you the right to destroy our family?""
"I think I deserve something after six years of standing beside you.""
Ethan looked at her.
"You had a house. A comfortable life. Access to everything.""
"Not everything.""
"What else did you want?""
Vanessa looked directly at him.
"Your mother's shares.""
Ethan stared.
She continued.
"Richard promised me a controlling position after the acquisition. I would have had the money, the title, and the freedom to leave.""
Marcus shook his head.
"You were going to betray me for a title?""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"I was going to stop being dependent on a man who never trusted me.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Marcus, we need to act quickly.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Why?""
"The transfer agreement is scheduled for tomorrow morning. If Richard has already submitted preliminary filings, he may attempt to complete the transaction without your signature.""
"Can he do that?""
"Not legally. But he could try to create the appearance that you approved it.""
Ethan looked at the documents.
"Then we need to freeze the trust.""
Daniel nodded.
"That would prevent the voting rights from being transferred.""
Marcus reached for his phone.
"Call Olivia again.""
Daniel took out his own phone.
"I'll contact the company's legal department.""
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
They all turned.
"You think you're going to stop him?""
Marcus frowned.
"Richard?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Richard has already taken care of the legal paperwork.""
Daniel looked confused.
"What paperwork?""
She smiled.
"The power of attorney.""
Marcus froze.
"What?""
Vanessa walked toward the dining table and opened the sealed envelope again.
She removed a document Marcus hadn't noticed earlier.
It was a notarized power of attorney.
His signature appeared at the bottom.
It authorized another individual to make financial and legal decisions on his behalf if he became incapacitated.
Marcus stared.
"I never signed this.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"You did.""
"No.""
"You signed it three months ago.""
Marcus took the document.
His eyes moved across the page.
The signature looked authentic.
The notary's seal appeared genuine.
Ethan stepped closer.
"Dad?""
Marcus shook his head.
"I never signed this.""
Vanessa smiled.
"You were exhausted. You'd been working for three days. You signed a stack of documents in the study.""
"I remember signing the insurance renewal.""
"And this.""
"No.""
Vanessa leaned against the table.
"You really should read what you sign.""
Daniel grabbed the document.
"Who is the appointed attorney?""
Marcus looked at the page.
Then his expression changed.
The person authorized to act on his behalf was not Vanessa.
It was not Richard.
It was someone whose name had not been mentioned all evening.
Someone who had been dead for two years.
Ethan read the name.
"Arthur Hale?""
Marcus nodded.
"My older brother.""
Daniel frowned.
"But Arthur died two years ago.""
Marcus stared at the document.
"Exactly.""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
For the first time, she seemed to realize something had gone wrong.
Daniel examined the seal.
"Marcus, this document was notarized after Arthur's death.""
Marcus looked up.
"That's impossible.""
Ethan took the page.
He examined the notary's information.
Then he noticed a second name in the lower corner.
The witness.
His father's personal attorney.
The same attorney who had handled his mother's estate.
Ethan looked at Daniel.
"Can we contact him?""
Daniel nodded.
"His office opens at eight.""
Marcus checked the clock.
It was almost midnight.
"Call him now.""
Daniel dialed the number.
It rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
A recorded message answered.
The office was closed.
Daniel ended the call.
"We'll have to wait until morning.""
Vanessa picked up her handbag.
"Wonderful. Then I'm going to bed.""
Marcus stepped in front of her.
"You're not going anywhere.""
She looked at him.
"You don't own me.""
"No. But the police will want to speak with you.""
Vanessa's face went cold.
"Then call them.""
Marcus hesitated.
Ethan noticed.
"Dad?""
Marcus looked at his son.
"I don't want to make another mistake.""
Ethan's expression softened slightly.
"Then stop making decisions based on what you want to believe.""
Marcus looked down.
For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.
Then he nodded.
He picked up his phone and called the police.
While he explained the staged assault and the financial documents, Ethan returned to the security console.
He wanted to secure the recordings.
He copied the original footage to an encrypted drive and checked the system logs.
Something caught his attention.
A notification.
*External access detected.*
He opened the details.
Someone had logged into the security server remotely.
The login had occurred at 11:47 p.m.
Just three minutes earlier.
Ethan looked at the timestamp.
Then at the IP address.
It belonged to a device registered to the Hale family estate.
Not Vanessa's phone.
Not Marcus's laptop.
A second computer.
One that had been disconnected from the network for months.
Ethan clicked the device information.
The system identified its location.
The old guesthouse behind the main property.
He frowned.
Nobody had used that building since his uncle Arthur died.
Then a new notification appeared.
*Security archive deletion request received.*
Ethan's heart began pounding.
He looked toward the dining room.
"Dad!""
Marcus turned.
"What?""
"Someone is trying to delete the recordings!""
Daniel hurried over.
"From where?""
Ethan pointed at the screen.
"The guesthouse.""
Marcus stared.
"That building has been locked for two years.""
The deletion request was still processing.
Ethan opened the live camera feed.
The guesthouse appeared on the monitor.
A light had just switched on in the upstairs window.
Then a figure crossed behind the curtain.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Who is that?""
Ethan zoomed in.
The figure stopped beside the window.
Slowly, it turned toward the camera.
And even through the grainy security footage, Ethan recognized the face.
It was Arthur Hale.
May you like
His father's supposedly dead brother.
*End of Chapter 6.*
