Chapter 4: The Man Behind the Phone Call
"Your son isn't the only person they've been planning to destroy.""
Daniel's words hung in the air.
Marcus stood beside the security console, gripping his phone so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.
"Daniel, explain yourself.""
There was a brief rustling sound.
Then Daniel lowered his voice.
"Not over the phone.""
Marcus looked toward Vanessa.
She was standing beside the dining table, her handbag open at her feet. Her expression had changed. The confidence she had displayed moments earlier was gone.
"What do you mean, not over the phone?"" Marcus demanded.
"Someone has access to your company communications. I don't know who, but I found evidence that financial reports were altered before they reached you.""
"Who altered them?""
"I need to show you something.""
"Daniel, I'm asking you a question.""
"And I'm telling you that if you want to understand what's happening, you need to get Ethan away from Vanessa.""
Ethan looked up.
Marcus glanced at him.
"He's standing right here.""
"Good. Keep him there. And Marcus?""
"What?""
"Don't sign anything tomorrow morning.""
The call ended.
For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the faint hum of the refrigerator.
Marcus slowly lowered his phone.
Vanessa folded her arms.
"Well, that was dramatic.""
Marcus turned toward her.
"Daniel says someone has been altering company records.""
"Daniel says a lot of things.""
"He also says not to sign the transfer agreement.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"That's because he's trying to manipulate you.""
"What transfer agreement?""
She looked at Ethan.
Marcus followed her gaze.
"Why did you tell Daniel I needed to sign something tomorrow?""
Vanessa picked up her handbag.
"Because your company is restructuring. You know that.""
"I know nothing about an agreement.""
"Then perhaps you should start paying attention to your own business.""
Ethan stepped between them.
"Stop changing the subject. Who is Daniel working with?""
Vanessa looked at him with open contempt.
"You really think you're clever, don't you?""
"I think you're running out of lies.""
She approached him slowly.
"Your father has spent his entire life building something. You have spent yours expecting to inherit it.""
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"I never asked for his money.""
"Really? Then why are you still here?""
"Because this is my home.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Your home? You mean the house your father bought? The house I have maintained while you contributed absolutely nothing?""
Marcus raised his voice.
"Enough, Vanessa.""
She turned toward him.
"Don't you dare tell me to be quiet. I've been protecting this family while your son has been undermining it.""
"Protecting us from what?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Marcus walked to the dining table and picked up the printed transfer agreement.
He had barely looked at it earlier.
Now he studied every line.
The document transferred controlling authority over Hale Industrial Holdings to a newly established company.
The proposed transaction was dated the following morning.
The listed buyer was a private investment firm.
Marcus frowned.
"I've never heard of this company.""
Vanessa shrugged.
"You don't need to know every detail.""
"Apparently, I do.""
He turned another page.
The signature line was marked with his name.
Below it was a second signature.
Vanessa Hale.
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"You were supposed to sign this too?""
She looked away.
Ethan reached for the document.
Marcus handed it to him.
Ethan read the company name aloud.
"Northbridge Capital Partners.""
He took out his phone and searched his email for the name.
A few seconds later, he found something.
"Dad.""
"What?""
"Look at this.""
Ethan showed him an email received six weeks earlier from an unknown sender.
It contained a message warning him that someone was preparing to transfer assets out of his father's company.
The email had no signature.
Its subject line read:
*Your father's company is being sold without his knowledge.*
Marcus looked at him.
"Why didn't you show me this?""
"I tried.""
"When?""
"Six weeks ago. You told me I was interfering in your business and asked me to stay out of it.""
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
Ethan continued.
"I didn't want to argue, so I started checking the information myself.""
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
"He's lying. He sent that email to himself.""
Ethan turned.
"How would I know about Northbridge before you showed me the agreement?""
Vanessa's lips pressed together.
Marcus took the phone.
"Who sent this?""
"I don't know. But the sender included a reference number from one of the company's internal transactions.""
"Why didn't you investigate?""
"I did. The reference number belonged to an account that had been closed three months earlier.""
Marcus looked toward the security monitor.
"Daniel knows about this?""
"I don't know.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"This is ridiculous. You're both making decisions based on anonymous emails and edited videos.""
Marcus stared at her.
"Edited videos?""
She hesitated.
"Anyone can manipulate footage.""
"Then why did you try to stop me from playing it?""
"Because I knew you would twist it against me.""
Marcus looked at Ethan.
"Show me the original files.""
Ethan opened the security archive.
The recording properties appeared.
The file had been created directly by the camera system. Its digital signature matched the security server's stored checksum.
No editing.
No alterations.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
Before he could speak, the doorbell rang.
All three turned toward the entrance.
Marcus checked the security display.
A black sedan was parked outside.
Daniel Price stood on the front step.
Marcus opened the door.
Daniel entered without waiting for an invitation.
He was in his early fifties, with silver hair and a habit of adjusting his cuff links whenever he was nervous.
Tonight, his hands were shaking.
"Marcus.""
"What happened?""
Daniel glanced toward Vanessa.
His expression changed.
"She's here.""
Vanessa gave him a cold smile.
"Hello, Daniel.""
Daniel didn't return it.
Instead, he looked directly at Marcus.
"Have you played the backup?""
"Yes.""
"All of it?""
"Enough.""
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"Then you know about Northbridge.""
Marcus held up the agreement.
"Tell me what it is.""
Daniel walked to the dining table.
He placed a thick black folder beside the cash.
"Northbridge is a shell company. It was established eight months ago. Its registered directors are two people you've never met.""
"Who controls it?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Someone inside your company.""
Marcus stared at him.
"Who?""
Daniel opened the folder.
A series of financial records appeared.
"These are the original transaction logs. Someone created a secondary ledger that redirected money through several holding accounts. The altered reports made it look like Ethan had authorized the transfers.""
Ethan leaned forward.
"Can you prove I didn't?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes. Your credentials were copied, but the authentication device was different.""
Marcus frowned.
"Explain.""
"Your son's account requires two-factor approval. The approvals were generated through a hardware token registered to the executive office.""
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
"The executive office has access to that token.""
Daniel nodded.
"Only three people have authorized access.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Me.""
"Yes.""
"Vanessa.""
"Yes.""
"And you.""
Daniel swallowed.
"Correct.""
Vanessa gave a small laugh.
"So we're all suspects now?""
Daniel ignored her.
Marcus looked at him.
"Why didn't you tell me this earlier?""
"Because I was threatened.""
"By whom?""
Daniel looked toward Vanessa again.
Then he opened another page.
A photograph was attached.
It showed Daniel sitting in a restaurant with a man wearing a navy jacket.
Marcus recognized him immediately.
It was Richard Cole, his business partner of fifteen years.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Why were you meeting Richard?""
Daniel shook his head.
"I wasn't meeting him voluntarily.""
"What does that mean?""
"Richard arranged the meeting. He said he had evidence that you were preparing to remove me from the company. He offered me money to sign a statement claiming Ethan had stolen the funds.""
Ethan stared at him.
"And you agreed?""
Daniel looked ashamed.
"I didn't sign anything.""
"But you met him.""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Daniel opened the folder again.
"Because I recorded the conversation.""
Marcus's expression hardened.
"Where is it?""
Daniel reached inside his jacket.
Before he could retrieve anything, Vanessa suddenly grabbed the folder.
She pulled it toward herself and tore several pages loose.
"That's enough!""
Marcus seized her wrist.
"Give it back!""
Vanessa struggled.
Daniel stepped away.
Ethan grabbed the folder before it fell.
A small memory card slid out and landed beneath the table.
Vanessa saw it.
So did Ethan.
She lunged forward.
But Ethan was faster.
He picked it up and closed his fist around it.
Vanessa stopped.
Her face had gone pale.
Marcus looked at her.
"What is on that card?""
Daniel answered.
"Everything.""
Vanessa stared at him.
Daniel continued.
"Richard's voice. The payment offer. The instructions for the false financial reports. And the person who told Richard to use Ethan as the scapegoat.""
Marcus looked at the memory card in his son's hand.
"Who?""
Daniel took a breath.
Then he answered.
"Your wife.""
Vanessa suddenly slapped the table.
"He's lying!""
Marcus didn't move.
Daniel looked at her.
"I have the recording.""
Vanessa turned toward Marcus.
"Don't listen to him. He's trying to save himself.""
Marcus's voice was barely above a whisper.
"Then why are you afraid of that card?""
Nobody answered.
Ethan placed the memory card beside the envelope.
Marcus reached for his laptop.
"Play it.""
Daniel nodded.
"Before you do, there's something else you need to understand.""
Marcus looked up.
"What?""
Daniel swallowed.
"The money isn't the real objective.""
"Then what is?""
Daniel pointed to the transfer agreement.
"Control of your company.""
Marcus looked down.
Then Daniel delivered the final blow.
May you like
"Richard doesn't want to steal three million dollars. He wants you to sign away everything you've spent thirty years building.""
And the man who had helped him plan it had already booked a flight out of the country.
