Chapter 5: The Recording of Their Betrayal
Marcus inserted the memory card into his laptop.
The screen displayed a single audio file.
Its creation date was eight months earlier.
Daniel stood beside him.
Ethan remained near the table, keeping the memory card case in his hand.
Vanessa had moved toward the staircase, but Marcus blocked her path.
"Nobody leaves.""
She looked at him.
"You cannot seriously expect me to stand here while these two men destroy my reputation.""
Marcus didn't blink.
"Then stay and defend yourself.""
Daniel clicked the file.
A burst of static filled the room.
Then Richard Cole's voice emerged.
"You're making this unnecessarily complicated, Daniel.""
Marcus's shoulders stiffened.
He knew that voice.
He had heard it in boardrooms, at Christmas parties, and during late-night business calls.
Richard had been his closest professional ally for fifteen years.
Daniel's recorded voice followed.
"You want me to sign a report accusing Ethan of stealing three million dollars. I won't do that.""
Richard laughed.
"Then don't sign it. Vanessa already has enough evidence.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
The recording continued.
Daniel asked, "And what happens after Marcus signs the transfer agreement?""
Richard replied casually.
"He becomes a consultant. Northbridge takes operational control. The shareholders receive their payments. Everyone walks away happy.""
"Except Marcus.""
"Marcus will receive more money than he knows what to do with.""
"You're taking his company.""
Richard's voice became colder.
"His company is worth hundreds of millions. He'll never know the difference once the paperwork is complete.""
Daniel asked another question.
"And Ethan?""
Richard laughed again.
"That's Vanessa's department.""
A brief silence followed.
Then Richard said something that made Ethan's stomach turn.
"She knows exactly how to make that boy look dangerous. One incident, one police report, one financial scandal. Marcus will sign whatever we put in front of him.""
Marcus slowly turned toward Vanessa.
She stood motionless.
The recording continued.
Daniel's voice sounded strained.
"Why involve his family?""
"Because Marcus trusts his family more than he trusts us. Once he believes his own son is stealing from him, he won't question anything.""
A chair creaked.
Then another voice entered the recording.
A woman's voice.
Vanessa's.
"Don't worry. Ethan has always been easy to provoke.""
Marcus closed his eyes.
Ethan stared at the floor.
On the recording, Richard asked, "And the money?""
Vanessa replied, "I'll make sure it's found in the right place.""
Richard chuckled.
"You're good at this.""
"I've had practice.""
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Marcus sat back slowly.
He looked older than he had an hour earlier.
"How long?""
Daniel answered quietly.
"At least eight months.""
Marcus stared at the laptop.
"Eight months.""
"Yes.""
"And you knew?""
"I suspected something was happening. I didn't know the full plan until three weeks ago.""
Marcus stood.
"You should have told me.""
"I was afraid.""
"Of Richard?""
"Of both of them.""
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
She didn't deny it.
Instead, she walked toward the table and picked up her wineglass.
It was empty.
She placed it back down.
"You've heard one recording," she said.
"One conversation taken out of context.""
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"Out of context?""
"Richard was exaggerating. He likes to make himself sound powerful.""
Daniel shook his head.
"There's more.""
Vanessa turned sharply.
"Don't.""
Daniel opened the folder and removed a printed transcript.
"Richard sent me instructions afterward. He wanted the transfer agreement completed by tomorrow at ten.""
Marcus took the document.
The instructions were dated six days earlier.
At the bottom was an electronic approval.
Vanessa Hale.
Marcus looked up.
"Why were you approving transactions for my company?""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Because you asked me to help with administrative matters.""
"I never authorized you to approve a corporate acquisition.""
"You gave me access to the accounts.""
"For household expenses.""
"Access is access, Marcus.""
"Not anymore.""
He took out his phone and called the company's legal department.
"Get me Olivia Grant.""
A receptionist answered.
"Mr. Hale, it's nearly midnight.""
"I don't care. I need Olivia.""
"She's traveling.""
"Find her.""
He ended the call.
Vanessa looked at him.
"You're going to regret humiliating me like this.""
Marcus ignored her.
Ethan stepped closer.
"Dad, there's something else.""
Marcus turned.
"What?""
"The cash.""
He pointed toward the stack on the table.
Vanessa's expression changed immediately.
Ethan continued.
"Why would she need to put that much cash here if the real plan was about the company?""
Daniel looked toward the money.
"I wondered the same thing.""
Marcus picked up the first bundle.
It contained hundred-dollar bills.
He counted the edge.
The bundles were identical.
"How much is here?""
Ethan checked the envelope.
"Looks like fifty thousand.""
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
"Where did this come from?""
She shrugged.
"I keep emergency cash.""
"Fifty thousand dollars?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because I don't trust banks.""
Ethan let out a short laugh.
"That's convenient.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"You know nothing about being financially responsible.""
Ethan pointed at the sealed envelope.
"Then explain why the cash was arranged beside the statement accusing me of stealing.""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
"Marcus, look at the bills.""
"What about them?""
"The serial numbers.""
Marcus turned one bundle over.
Daniel took out his phone and opened a photograph.
It showed a list of currency serial numbers.
"They match a withdrawal from the company emergency reserve last month.""
Marcus looked confused.
"How do you know?""
"Because I investigated the missing reserve funds.""
He took a breath.
"Fifty thousand dollars was withdrawn under Ethan's authorization. But the withdrawal was made at a private bank branch where the teller recorded the recipient's identity.""
Ethan frowned.
"Who collected it?""
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
"She did.""
Marcus stared at his wife.
She shook her head.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel placed another photograph on the table.
It showed Vanessa entering the bank.
The date was visible.
So was the time.
Marcus slowly picked up the photograph.
"Why did you withdraw company money?""
Vanessa's voice became defensive.
"Richard told me it was part of a temporary arrangement.""
"Richard?""
"He said the money was needed to cover an urgent transaction.""
"And you took it?""
"I was going to put it back.""
"When?""
She looked away.
Marcus stepped closer.
"Tell me where the rest is.""
"I don't know.""
"Vanessa.""
"I said I don't know!""
Ethan looked at her.
"You used my authorization to withdraw money, then brought it here to make it look like I stole it.""
Vanessa's eyes flashed.
"You should be grateful I didn't do worse.""
Marcus froze.
Daniel looked at her.
"What did you say?""
Vanessa seemed to realize what had slipped out.
She turned away.
Marcus stepped toward her.
"What does that mean?""
"Nothing.""
"Tell me.""
She picked up her handbag.
Marcus caught her arm.
"You're not walking away from this.""
Vanessa jerked free.
"Don't touch me!""
Ethan stepped between them.
"Nobody is touching you. Just answer the question.""
Vanessa glared at him.
"You have no idea what your father has done.""
Marcus looked confused.
"What have I done?""
She laughed.
"You really don't remember?""
"Remember what?""
Vanessa reached inside her handbag and removed a folded photograph.
She placed it on the table.
It showed Marcus standing outside a hospital entrance with a woman.
A younger woman.
Ethan stared at the photograph.
He recognized her immediately.
His biological mother.
The woman who had died when he was seventeen.
Ethan picked up the picture.
"Where did you get this?""
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
"Ask your husband why he never told you the truth about the night your mother died.""
Ethan's fingers tightened around the photograph.
"Don't bring my mother into this.""
Vanessa ignored him.
"Marcus told everyone it was an accident.""
Marcus's face turned pale.
"Stop.""
"But he never told you what she was doing at the hospital.""
Marcus stepped toward her.
"I said stop.""
Ethan looked between them.
"What is she talking about?""
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"Your mother didn't die before she could tell your father something. She died after she discovered what he had been hiding.""
Marcus grabbed the photograph.
"That's enough!""
Ethan stared at him.
"Dad?""
Marcus couldn't meet his eyes.
For the first time that night, he looked genuinely afraid.
Daniel quietly closed the laptop.
"Marcus, I think we need to talk about the old company records.""
Ethan turned.
"What old records?""
Daniel hesitated.
"The original ownership documents.""
Marcus looked at him sharply.
"Not now.""
But Ethan had already heard enough.
He stepped toward his father.
"Tell me what she means.""
Marcus rubbed his face.
"Your mother had questions about the company. That's all.""
"Questions about what?""
Vanessa answered for him.
"About who actually owned it.""
Marcus turned toward her.
She continued.
"Your father didn't build Hale Industrial Holdings alone, Ethan.""
Ethan looked confused.
"Of course he did.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Your mother helped build it. She owned half of the original company.""
Ethan looked at Marcus.
"Is that true?""
Marcus remained silent.
Vanessa reached into her handbag again.
This time she removed an old legal document.
The paper was yellowed at the edges.
A name appeared near the bottom.
Ethan's mother.
And beneath it, a clause that neither Marcus nor Vanessa could hide.
If anything happened to her, her shares would pass directly to her son.
Ethan.
He looked at his father.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Marcus's voice cracked.
"Because I thought I was protecting you.""
"From what?""
Vanessa smiled.
"From the truth.""
She tapped the document.
"Your father doesn't own this company outright. Neither does Richard. And neither do I.""
Ethan looked down at the signature.
His mother's name was unmistakable.
Then he read the next line.
His own name.
He was listed as the majority beneficiary of the original ownership trust.
Marcus whispered, "Ethan, please...""
But Ethan had already understood.
The three million dollars, the false assault, the forged account, and the transfer agreement were all connected to one thing.
His inheritance.
May you like
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Now do you understand why I needed you out of this house?""
