Chapter 7: The Dead Man in the Guesthouse
"That's impossible.""
Marcus's voice was barely audible.
He stood inches from the security monitor, staring at the figure behind the guesthouse window.
The man had silver hair, a narrow face, and a distinctive scar running from his left temple toward his cheekbone.
Arthur Hale.
His older brother.
The man Marcus had buried two years earlier.
Ethan looked from the screen to his father.
"Are you sure that's him?""
Marcus didn't answer.
Daniel moved closer to the monitor.
"Can you enlarge the image?""
Ethan adjusted the controls.
The figure stepped toward the window.
The camera captured his face more clearly.
Marcus stumbled backward.
"Oh, my God.""
He reached for the edge of the table.
Vanessa stood near the staircase, watching them.
Unlike Marcus, she didn't look surprised.
She looked annoyed.
Ethan noticed.
"Vanessa.""
She turned.
"What?""
"Why aren't you surprised?""
Her expression hardened.
"Because I don't believe everything I see on a screen.""
"You knew.""
"Don't be ridiculous.""
"You knew Arthur was alive.""
Vanessa picked up her handbag.
"Your father is exhausted. You're both seeing things.""
Daniel pointed toward the monitor.
"That man is standing inside a locked building on this property. We need to call the police.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Wait.""
Daniel stared at him.
"Marcus, your brother is supposed to be dead.""
"I know.""
"Then we shouldn't wait.""
Marcus looked at the screen again.
The figure had disappeared from the window.
"Arthur.""
He whispered the name like a prayer.
Then he grabbed his coat.
"I'm going over there.""
Ethan caught his arm.
"Dad, don't.""
"That's my brother.""
"Or someone who wants you to think he's your brother.""
Marcus looked at him.
"What are you suggesting?""
"That this could be a trap. Someone just tried to erase the security footage. We don't know who's inside.""
Daniel nodded.
"Ethan is right. I'll contact the police.""
Marcus pulled away.
"I'm not waiting for someone else to tell me whether my brother is alive.""
He headed toward the front door.
Ethan followed.
"Then I'm coming with you.""
Vanessa stepped into their path.
"Marcus, please. Don't do this.""
He stopped.
"Why?""
She hesitated.
"Because Arthur is dangerous.""
Marcus stared at her.
"You just told us you didn't believe the footage.""
"I said I wasn't sure.""
"How do you know he's dangerous?""
Vanessa looked away.
Daniel watched her carefully.
"Have you been communicating with him?""
"No.""
"Then how do you know?""
Vanessa's voice sharpened.
"Because I know what happened two years ago!""
The room fell silent.
Marcus slowly turned toward her.
"What happened two years ago?""
She swallowed.
"Nothing.""
"You said you know what happened.""
"I meant I know he died.""
Marcus stepped closer.
"You attended the funeral. You stood beside me when we buried an empty coffin.""
Ethan frowned.
"An empty coffin?""
Marcus looked at him.
"Arthur's body was never recovered. His car was found near a river after a storm. The police believed he had drowned.""
Ethan looked back at the monitor.
"So you never actually saw him?""
"No.""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Marcus turned toward her.
"Did you know he survived?""
She didn't answer.
Marcus's voice rose.
"Vanessa!""
She finally spoke.
"I saw him once.""
Marcus went completely still.
"When?""
"Last year.""
"Where?""
"At a hotel in Chicago.""
Ethan stared at her.
"You're saying you met my uncle?""
Vanessa nodded.
Marcus looked devastated.
"And you didn't tell me?""
"He asked me not to.""
"Why?""
"Because he said you would never forgive him.""
Marcus laughed bitterly.
"Forgive him for what?""
Vanessa looked at the floor.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Marcus, we need to understand why he's here now.""
Marcus turned toward the door.
"Then let's ask him.""
They left the house together.
The night air was cold, and the wet driveway reflected the security lights.
The guesthouse stood at the far end of the property, behind a row of tall oak trees.
Its windows had been dark for two years.
Now one upstairs light glowed.
Ethan noticed something else.
The front door was slightly open.
"Someone's been here recently.""
Marcus approached slowly.
"Arthur?""
No answer.
He pushed the door.
It creaked open.
Inside, the guesthouse smelled of dust, old wood, and fresh cigarette smoke.
A lamp illuminated the living room.
On the coffee table sat a half-empty cup of coffee.
Marcus stared at it.
"He's here.""
Daniel took out his phone.
"I'm calling the police.""
Ethan moved toward the staircase.
A sound came from upstairs.
Three slow footsteps.
Then a man's voice.
"Marcus.""
Marcus froze.
He knew that voice.
He had heard it every day growing up.
"Arthur?""
A shadow appeared at the top of the stairs.
Then the man stepped into the light.
Arthur Hale looked older.
Thinner.
But unmistakably alive.
Marcus's knees nearly gave way.
"You...""
Arthur descended slowly.
"Hello, little brother.""
Marcus stared at him.
Then he crossed the room and grabbed him by the shoulders.
"You're alive.""
Arthur nodded.
"Yes.""
Marcus struck him across the face.
The sound echoed through the guesthouse.
Arthur stumbled.
"That was for the funeral," Marcus said.
He hit him again.
"And that was for making me bury you.""
Ethan rushed forward.
"Dad!""
Marcus stopped.
His hands were trembling.
Arthur wiped blood from his lip.
"You haven't changed.""
Marcus stepped back.
"Where have you been?""
"Somewhere safe.""
"Safe from whom?""
Arthur looked toward Vanessa.
She had entered the guesthouse behind them.
"From the people who wanted me dead.""
Marcus followed his gaze.
"Who?""
Arthur looked directly at Vanessa.
"Your wife.""
Vanessa laughed sharply.
"Don't start.""
Arthur ignored her.
"She wasn't working alone.""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Then who else?""
Arthur looked at Ethan.
"Your uncle's business partner. Richard Cole.""
Marcus shook his head.
"Richard and I have been friends for fifteen years.""
"That's why he chose you.""
Arthur walked toward the coffee table and picked up a photograph.
It showed Richard, Vanessa, and Arthur standing together outside a private restaurant.
The date was printed on the back.
Three months before Arthur's supposed death.
Marcus took it.
"What is this?""
Arthur sat down.
"Richard discovered that your mother had created an ownership trust for Ethan. He also discovered that the trust would become active when Ethan turned twenty-five.""
Ethan frowned.
"So Richard knew about my shares.""
Arthur nodded.
"He knew before you did.""
Marcus looked at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"I tried.""
"When?""
"Two years ago. Before the accident.""
Arthur leaned forward.
"Richard and I had been investigating irregular payments. We discovered that someone was moving money out of the company through a network of shell corporations.""
"Why didn't you go to the police?""
"Because Richard controlled the financial records, and someone inside the police department was feeding him information.""
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"Do you have proof?""
Arthur reached inside his jacket.
He removed a small leather notebook.
"Everything I found is in here.""
Marcus opened it.
The pages contained handwritten account numbers, dates, names, and transaction references.
Ethan leaned over his shoulder.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Vanessa Hale.
Another name appeared beside it.
Daniel Price.
Ethan looked up.
"Daniel?""
Daniel stepped backward.
"That's not what it looks like.""
Arthur watched him.
"Isn't it?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Those entries are from before I discovered the fraud. I was tracking the payments.""
Arthur studied him.
"Then why did you never report them?""
"Because I was trying to find the person responsible.""
Arthur closed the notebook.
"That's what they all say.""
Marcus looked toward Vanessa.
"Tell me the truth.""
Vanessa's eyes were cold.
"You really want the truth?""
"Yes.""
She walked toward the center of the room.
"Arthur wasn't supposed to survive.""
Marcus stared.
"What?""
"Richard arranged the accident. The car was pushed off the road during the storm. Arthur escaped, but he disappeared because he was afraid Richard would finish the job.""
Arthur nodded.
"That's correct.""
Marcus turned toward him.
"And you let us believe you were dead?""
"I had no choice.""
"You let me bury an empty coffin!""
Arthur looked down.
"I'm sorry.""
Marcus shook his head.
"That doesn't fix anything.""
Arthur stood.
"No. But it explains why I couldn't come back.""
Ethan glanced at Vanessa.
"Then why are you working with her?""
Arthur's expression changed.
"I'm not.""
Vanessa laughed.
"That's convenient.""
Arthur looked at Ethan.
"Your stepmother contacted me two weeks ago. She said Richard was preparing to transfer the company and wanted to negotiate.""
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
"You contacted him?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because I wanted to know what Richard was planning.""
Arthur shook his head.
"You wanted to know whether he would keep his promise.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
Marcus stepped closer.
"What promise?""
Arthur looked at him.
"She was promised a controlling position in Northbridge after the acquisition.""
Marcus turned toward his wife.
She said nothing.
Arthur continued.
"But there was another part of the agreement.""
Ethan felt his stomach tighten.
"What?""
Arthur opened the notebook to the last page.
There was a handwritten instruction.
*Once Ethan's inheritance is transferred, remove all remaining obstacles.*
Marcus looked at Arthur.
"What does that mean?""
Arthur's voice became quiet.
"It means Richard never intended to let Ethan live long enough to take control of the trust.""
Silence filled the guesthouse.
Then Vanessa suddenly smiled.
"That's a very dramatic story.""
She reached into her handbag.
Ethan noticed the movement.
"Don't.""
Vanessa pulled out her phone.
She pressed one button.
A car engine started outside.
Arthur turned toward the window.
His face changed.
"Get down!""
The front window shattered.
A bullet struck the wall behind Marcus.
Ethan threw himself toward his father.
Daniel dove behind the sofa.
Arthur pulled Marcus to the floor.
Outside, headlights swept across the trees.
A second shot rang out.
Then a third.
Ethan crawled toward the side door.
He looked back at Vanessa.
She was standing upright.
Calm.
Watching the chaos.
May you like
And when the headlights disappeared down the driveway, she whispered something that made Ethan's blood run cold.
"Richard said you would understand eventually.""
