Chapter 2: The Recording She Couldn't Erase
Marcus stared at Vanessa's fingers wrapped around his wrist.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The security monitor continued playing.
Onscreen, Vanessa was still standing beside the table, holding the torn pieces of her red dress.
The footage had no sound yet, but the picture was unmistakable.
She had done it herself.
Marcus slowly turned his head.
"Let go of me.""
Vanessa released him.
"Marcus, please. You don't understand.""
"Then explain.""
She looked at Ethan.
Then at the screen.
Then back at Marcus.
"I was frightened. He was threatening me.""
Marcus pointed toward the monitor.
"That video shows you tearing your own dress.""
"I was trying to make him stop!""
"Stop what?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"He was intimidating me.""
Ethan let out a bitter laugh.
"That's interesting. Because you were smiling before you started screaming.""
"Shut up!"" Vanessa snapped.
The sudden change in her voice was so sharp that Marcus looked at her again.
Ethan stepped forward.
"Go ahead, Vanessa. Tell him what you said before you ripped your dress.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"I don't remember.""
"I do.""
Ethan looked directly at his father.
"She told me I was leaving this house tonight.""
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
"What?""
"She said you would believe her. Then she tore her dress and started screaming.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"He's making things up.""
Marcus returned his attention to the screen.
"Turn on the audio.""
Ethan nodded.
"The recording has sound.""
He reached toward the console, but Marcus raised a hand.
"Let me.""
His fingers moved across the controls.
The playback restarted.
This time, the speakers filled the dining room with the voices from moments earlier.
Vanessa's voice came first.
"You're leaving this house tonight.""
Marcus froze.
Then came Ethan's reply.
"Why would I leave?""
"Because you're no longer welcome here.""
"You're not my mother, Vanessa. You don't get to decide that.""
The footage showed Vanessa looking toward the ceiling.
Then came the unmistakable sound of tearing fabric.
Marcus's face lost its color.
On the recording, Vanessa spoke again.
"Your father will believe me before he believes you.""
Ethan closed his eyes.
He had heard those words once already.
Hearing them again, with his father standing beside him, somehow hurt more.
The recording continued.
Vanessa scratched her own arm.
She knocked over the wineglass.
Then she screamed for Marcus.
The footage showed everything.
Every movement.
Every lie.
Every second.
Marcus finally pressed pause.
He looked at his wife as if he were seeing a stranger.
"You planned this.""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"No.""
"You planned to make me believe Ethan attacked you.""
"I was trying to protect myself!""
"From what?""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Ethan wiped blood from his lip.
"Ask her about the envelope.""
Vanessa immediately turned toward him.
"Don't.""
Marcus glanced at the table.
The sealed white envelope was still there.
"What envelope?""
"The one she brought downstairs before you arrived," Ethan said.
"She told me it belonged to you.""
Marcus picked it up.
His name was written across the front.
The handwriting was Vanessa's.
He turned it over.
The seal was intact.
"What's inside?""
Vanessa took another step toward him.
"Nothing important.""
Marcus looked at her.
"You put an envelope with my name on it beside a stack of cash, staged an assault, and now you're telling me it's nothing important?""
"I can explain.""
"Then explain.""
She reached for the envelope.
Marcus moved it behind his back.
"No more touching things.""
Ethan watched his father carefully.
For the first time that evening, Marcus seemed willing to listen.
But Ethan wasn't ready to celebrate.
He knew Vanessa.
He had lived with her for six years.
She never entered a room without knowing where the exits were.
She never made a move without considering what would happen afterward.
And she never panicked unless something had gone wrong.
Marcus broke the seal.
Inside was a folded document and several printed photographs.
He unfolded the first page.
His eyes moved across the text.
Then stopped.
"What is this?""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"Marcus, give me that.""
He kept reading.
Ethan stepped closer.
"What does it say?""
Marcus didn't answer.
He turned the page.
A photograph slipped onto the floor.
Ethan picked it up.
It showed him leaving a bank on a rainy afternoon, carrying a black leather bag.
He recognized the day.
He had withdrawn money for his father's company after Marcus asked him to handle an urgent payment.
There were more photographs.
Ethan entering a hotel.
Ethan meeting an older man outside a coffee shop.
Ethan standing beside a car registered to one of Marcus's business partners.
"What is this?"" Ethan asked.
Vanessa's voice became cold.
"Evidence.""
"Evidence of what?""
"That you've been stealing from your father.""
Ethan stared at her.
Marcus looked down at the document again.
It appeared to be a preliminary financial report listing suspicious transfers from one of his company accounts.
Several withdrawals had been made under Ethan's employee credentials.
The total exceeded two hundred thousand dollars.
Marcus's voice dropped.
"Ethan.""
"No.""
"These transactions...""
"I didn't make them.""
"Your credentials are listed here.""
"Because I was authorized to access that account!""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"That's exactly what I've been trying to tell you. He used his position to steal from you.""
Ethan looked at the cash on the table.
Then at the document.
Then at Vanessa.
The pieces began to connect.
She hadn't simply wanted him out of the house.
She wanted him to look like a violent thief.
An unstable son who had attacked his stepmother after being confronted about missing money.
If Marcus believed that story, Ethan would lose his home, his job, and possibly his freedom.
"You're framing me," Ethan said.
Vanessa tilted her head.
"Why would I need to frame you? The evidence is right there.""
Marcus rubbed his forehead.
"Enough. Both of you.""
Ethan turned to him.
"Dad, I can prove those transfers weren't mine.""
"How?""
"The banking system records the device used for every transaction. I didn't authorize them.""
Vanessa laughed softly.
"Convenient.""
Ethan ignored her.
"Call the bank. Call your accountant. Check the original records.""
Marcus looked exhausted.
He placed the envelope on the table.
"Nobody leaves this room until I understand what's happening.""
Vanessa's phone vibrated.
She glanced at the screen.
A message appeared.
Ethan couldn't read the entire thing, but he saw three words before she quickly turned the phone over.
*Did he believe it?*
Ethan's eyes narrowed.
"Who was that?""
Vanessa slipped the phone into her pocket.
"Nobody.""
"Show me.""
"Don't tell me what to do.""
Marcus stepped between them again.
"That's enough.""
Ethan looked at his father.
"She has someone helping her.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You're becoming paranoid.""
Marcus picked up the envelope and removed another sheet.
This one was a formal statement bearing Vanessa's signature.
It claimed that Ethan had confronted her about the missing funds and threatened physical violence when she refused to give him money.
The statement had been prepared before the incident.
At the bottom was a date.
That afternoon.
Marcus stared at it.
"You prepared this before tonight?""
Vanessa's lips parted.
"I was documenting concerns.""
"Before he supposedly attacked you?""
"I knew he was becoming dangerous!""
Ethan stepped backward.
He suddenly understood why the cash had been placed so carefully in the center of the table.
It wasn't random.
It was a prop.
A staged collection of objects meant to support a story.
His father looked down at the statement.
Then at the recording.
Then at the torn red dress.
"Vanessa," he said quietly.
"What exactly were you planning to do tonight?""
She didn't answer.
Instead, she reached into her handbag and pulled out her phone.
Marcus held out his hand.
"Put it down.""
Vanessa stared at him.
For the first time, her frightened expression was completely gone.
"You're making a mistake, Marcus.""
"Put the phone down.""
She looked at Ethan.
Then she smiled.
"Ask your son why he was at the bank this morning.""
Ethan frowned.
"I wasn't.""
Vanessa tapped her screen.
A second later, Marcus's phone rang.
He looked at the incoming call.
It was his company's chief financial officer, Daniel Price.
Marcus answered.
"Daniel, I'm busy.""
Daniel's voice came through the speaker, trembling.
"Marcus, you need to get to the office immediately.""
"What's happened?""
"We've found another transfer.""
"How much?""
A long silence followed.
Then Daniel said something that made Marcus grip the phone harder.
"Three million dollars.""
Marcus looked at Ethan.
May you like
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
And Ethan realized the fake assault was only the beginning.
