Chapter 8: The Evidence That Could Destroy Them All
Vanessa placed the USB drive on the desk.
Nobody moved.
Michael stared at it.
"What is on that drive?""
Vanessa looked directly at him.
"Records. Emails. Documents. Things Helen kept hidden from you.""
Michael's face hardened.
"Then let us see them.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Not until you understand what you're dealing with.""
Margaret spoke calmly.
"Mrs. Whitmore, if those files contain evidence relevant to the investigation, they need to be preserved without alteration.""
Vanessa ignored her.
"Michael, do you remember the last year of Helen's life?""
His expression changed.
"Don't.""
"You were traveling constantly. You missed appointments. You missed family dinners. You barely came home.""
"I was working to support my family.""
"And Helen was alone.""
Emily looked down.
Vanessa continued.
"She was angry, Michael. She was frightened. She didn't trust anyone. She started making decisions without telling you.""
Michael's jaw tightened.
"That doesn't justify stealing from her.""
Vanessa leaned forward.
"Perhaps you should listen before deciding who the villain is.""
Michael looked at Margaret.
She nodded.
"Let us examine the files.""
James connected the USB drive to a secure computer.
A folder appeared on the screen.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Emails.
Scanned signatures.
Financial statements.
Photographs.
And several audio files.
Margaret immediately instructed James to create a forensic copy.
"Nobody opens or modifies the original files until the copy is verified.""
James nodded.
"Understood.""
After several minutes, he opened the first document.
It was an email exchange between Helen and Vanessa.
Helen had written:
I know you have been accessing the accounts without authorization. I am giving you one final opportunity to return the money.
Vanessa's response was short.
You have no idea what you're talking about.
The next email was more disturbing.
If you tell Michael, you will destroy this family.
Michael leaned back.
"She threatened Helen.""
Vanessa folded her arms.
"That email is out of context.""
Margaret looked at her.
"Then provide the context.""
Vanessa said nothing.
James opened another file.
It was a scanned copy of a document titled Medical Decision Authorization.
Michael examined the signature.
"That's not mine.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"That's the same forged authorization from the hospital.""
Margaret nodded.
"Yes.""
Vanessa finally spoke.
"I never forged anything.""
Michael looked at her.
"Then who did?""
She hesitated.
Richard shifted beside the door.
Margaret noticed.
"Mr. Cole, perhaps you can answer.""
Richard's face tightened.
"I didn't create that document.""
James opened the next file.
A payment record appeared.
The recipient was a private consulting company registered under Richard's name.
The amount was $175,000.
The date was two days before the hospital authorization.
Michael looked at Richard.
"Why did my company pay your private firm?""
Richard cleared his throat.
"Consulting services.""
"What services?""
"Financial restructuring.""
"Approved by whom?""
Richard glanced at Vanessa.
Michael's voice dropped.
"Answer me.""
Richard swallowed.
"Vanessa.""
Vanessa turned sharply.
"Richard!""
He looked away.
Michael slowly nodded.
"Thank you.""
He turned toward James.
"Save everything.""
James continued examining the files.
Then he found an audio recording.
The filename was simple.
February 14.
Clara immediately covered her mouth.
"That's the day Helen called me.""
Michael looked at her.
"Play it.""
The recording began with the sound of a door closing.
Then Helen's voice.
"Vanessa, I know what you've done.""
Vanessa answered.
"You don't know anything.""
"I found the transfers.""
"Then you should have kept looking.""
"Helen sounded frightened.""
"Don't pretend you care about me.""
"I care about Emily.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Emily has everything. She has a father who worships her. She has a house, money, and a future. What about me?""
Helen's voice became firmer.
"You married Michael. You knew he had a daughter.""
"I married a man who promised me a family.""
"You knew I was still alive when you came into this house.""
A pause.
Then Vanessa spoke again.
"I waited long enough.""
Michael's face went white.
Helen continued.
"You're not going to take my daughter's inheritance.""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"Then perhaps you should stop getting in my way.""
The recording ended abruptly.
Emily stared at the computer.
"Mom was scared.""
Michael reached for her hand.
"I know, sweetheart.""
Vanessa suddenly stepped toward the computer.
"Turn that off!""
James moved between her and the desk.
"Please step back.""
Vanessa's composure shattered.
"That recording is private!""
Margaret looked at her.
"It was preserved by Helen and is now relevant to a formal investigation.""
Vanessa turned toward Michael.
"You're going to believe a recording made by a sick woman over your own wife?""
Michael looked at her.
"You're the one who just handed us the evidence.""
Vanessa went silent.
The next file contained an email from an unknown sender.
It had been sent to Richard three days after Helen died.
The subject line read:
The Second Account.
Margaret opened it.
The email contained a short message.
The original account is secure. The remaining funds must be moved before Michael returns. The daughter must remain unaware.
James scrolled down.
There was an attachment.
A bank transfer authorization.
Michael leaned forward.
"That's enough. I want the beneficiary identified.""
James examined the account details.
Then his expression changed.
"Sir, the money wasn't transferred to Richard's company.""
"Where did it go?""
James turned the screen.
The beneficiary was a private account registered under the name of a woman.
Vanessa's maiden name.
Michael stared at it.
"That's your personal account.""
Vanessa's lips parted.
For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.
Richard stepped away from her.
Michael noticed.
"Richard, did you help her move the money?""
Richard didn't answer.
Margaret closed the folder.
"Mr. Cole, I strongly recommend you obtain independent legal representation before answering further questions.""
Vanessa turned toward him.
"Don't you dare.""
Richard looked at Michael.
"I can prove that Vanessa controlled the accounts.""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"What?""
"I have the original instructions.""
She stepped toward him.
"Richard!""
He moved backward.
"You told me to transfer the money.""
"You agreed to it!""
"You said it was temporary.""
"You signed everything!""
Michael raised his hand.
"Both of you, stop.""
He turned toward James.
"Contact the company's external auditors. Notify the relevant authorities. Preserve every record.""
James nodded.
"Yes, sir.""
Vanessa looked around the room.
Her eyes landed on Emily.
"You think you've won?""
Emily said nothing.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Your mother wasn't perfect. She kept secrets from you, too.""
Michael moved immediately.
"Don't speak to her.""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Why? Because you don't want your daughter to hear what Helen was really doing?""
Clara stood.
"That's enough, Vanessa.""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"You should have stayed away.""
Clara looked directly at her.
"I wish I had. Helen wouldn't have been so alone.""
For a moment, Vanessa's face became almost unrecognizable.
Then she picked up her handbag.
"I'm leaving.""
Michael nodded toward the security officers.
"You're free to leave with your personal belongings, but nothing belonging to the estate goes with you.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"You can't throw me out.""
Michael's answer was immediate.
"I haven't thrown you out. I'm making sure you don't take anything that isn't yours.""
She looked at Richard.
"Come with me.""
Richard didn't move.
Vanessa's face tightened.
"Richard?""
He looked at the floor.
"I'm not going anywhere with you.""
Her mouth fell open.
Then she turned and walked upstairs.
Later that evening, Michael sat alone in Helen's old bedroom.
The room had been restored as much as possible.
Her photographs were back on the shelves. Her favorite blue scarf lay across the chair.
Michael held the handwritten letter against his chest.
"I should have listened," he whispered.
A soft knock sounded.
Emily entered.
"Dad?""
He quickly wiped his eyes.
"Come here, sweetheart.""
She sat beside him.
For a while, neither spoke.
Then Emily asked a question.
"Do you think Mom knew she was going to die?""
Michael looked at her.
"I don't know.""
"Do you think she was afraid?""
He swallowed.
"Probably.""
Emily looked at the photograph on the bedside table.
"She must have been so lonely.""
Michael took her hand.
"Yes.""
Emily leaned against him.
"I wish I had told her I heard Vanessa arguing with her.""
Michael kissed the top of her head.
"You were a child. None of this was your responsibility.""
"But maybe I could have helped.""
"No, sweetheart. You were never supposed to carry something that heavy.""
Emily began to cry.
Michael wrapped both arms around her.
"I should have been here.""
She looked up.
"You came back.""
He nodded.
"And I'm not leaving again.""
At midnight, Daniel called.
Michael answered immediately.
"Daniel?""
"We have a problem.""
Michael sat up.
"What happened?""
"The bank has confirmed that one of the disputed accounts was opened using a document that appears to have been signed by Helen.""
"Another forgery?""
"Possibly. But there's something else.""
Daniel paused.
"The account received a transfer six weeks after Helen died. The authorization bears your signature.""
Michael closed his eyes.
"Another forged signature.""
"Yes. But the transfer wasn't made to Vanessa.""
"Then who received it?""
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Someone named Clara Bennett.""
Michael froze.
Across the room, Clara was helping Emily put away her mother's photographs.
Michael looked at her.
"Clara?""
Daniel continued.
"According to the bank records, she received nearly half a million dollars.""
Michael slowly stood.
"That can't be right.""
"I thought you'd want to know before confronting anyone.""
Michael ended the call.
He looked toward Clara.
"Clara, I need to ask you something.""
She turned.
"Of course.""
"Did Helen ever give you money after she died?""
Clara's face changed.
She looked at Emily.
Then at Michael.
"Not after she died.""
Michael held up his phone.
"Then why did a bank account receive nearly half a million dollars under your name six weeks later?""
Clara went pale.
"Because...""
She stopped.
Her hands began shaking.
Emily stepped closer.
"Clara?""
Clara looked at the young woman.
May you like
Then she whispered something that made Michael's blood run cold.
"Because someone paid me to disappear.""
