Chapter 2: The Man Who Owned the Mansion

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The chandelier sparkled behind Vanessa, casting tiny reflections across the marble floor.

Michael stood outside with one arm around Emily.

His royal-blue suit was immaculate, but his expression had turned dangerously cold.

Vanessa finally recovered enough to speak.

"Michael, darling! You're home!""

She rushed toward the entrance, forcing a smile onto her face.

"I wasn't expecting you until next month.""

Michael didn't move.

"Clearly.""

Vanessa glanced at Emily.

"Sweetheart, what happened? Why are you sitting outside?""

Emily stared at her in disbelief.

"Are you serious?""

Vanessa widened her eyes.

"Emily, please. Don't start.""

Michael looked down at his daughter.

"Emily, tell me.""

Emily swallowed.

"She pushed me outside. She broke my phone. She said I didn't belong here.""

Michael's jaw tightened.

"She did what?""

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

"That's not what happened. Emily has been extremely difficult lately. I was simply trying to teach her some respect.""

"By throwing her out?""

"Michael, you don't understand.""

"Then explain it.""

Vanessa glanced at Richard.

The man in black quickly stepped forward.

"Mr. Whitmore, perhaps we should discuss this privately.""

Michael turned toward him.

"I wasn't speaking to you.""

Richard stopped.

Michael continued, his voice low.

"Why are you in my house, Richard?""

"I work here.""

"That wasn't my question.""

Vanessa moved between them.

"Michael, please. Richard has been helping me manage the household while you've been away. You know how difficult things have been.""

Michael looked at her.

"Difficult for whom?""

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

Emily quietly tugged at her father's sleeve.

"Dad, can we please go inside? I'm freezing.""

Michael's expression softened immediately.

"Of course, sweetheart.""

He removed his suit jacket and placed it around her shoulders.

Then he turned toward the entrance.

"Open the door, Vanessa.""

She hesitated.

"Michael, I think we should talk first.""

"Open. The. Door.""

Vanessa stepped aside.

Michael guided Emily into the mansion.

The moment she crossed the threshold, she stopped.

Everything looked familiar.

The chandelier.

The staircase.

The enormous portrait of her parents hanging above the fireplace.

But something was missing.

The family photographs that had once lined the hallway were gone.

In their place were framed pictures of Vanessa attending charity galas, standing beside politicians, and smiling at expensive restaurants.

Emily stared at the empty section of wall.

"Where are Mom's pictures?""

Vanessa answered too quickly.

"I had them moved. They were collecting dust.""

Emily turned toward her.

"They were hanging there yesterday.""

"Well, the decoration needed updating.""

Michael looked at the wall.

Then he noticed something else.

The small table beside the staircase, where his late wife used to keep her favorite vase, was gone.

He slowly turned toward Vanessa.

"What else did you remove?""

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"Michael, you're making a big deal out of nothing.""

"Where are Helen's belongings?""

"I put some things in storage.""

"Which storage?""

"The usual one.""

Michael took a step closer.

"Vanessa, I've asked you a question.""

She folded her arms.

"I don't appreciate being interrogated in my own home.""

Michael stared at her.

"Your own home?""

Richard cleared his throat.

"Mr. Whitmore, I believe there has been a misunderstanding. Vanessa has been doing her best to maintain the property.""

Michael turned sharply.

"Richard, I hired you to manage my company's financial records. Not to manage my family.""

Richard's face tightened.

"Of course.""

"Then remember your position.""

Emily looked between them.

She had never seen her father speak this way.

During her childhood, Michael had always been warm and patient. He rarely raised his voice. Even when business problems kept him awake at night, he would still find time to sit beside her and ask about school.

But the man standing in front of her now seemed different.

Not angry in the ordinary sense.

Disappointed.

And that somehow made him more frightening.

Michael took Emily's hand.

"Come with me.""

He led her toward the staircase.

Vanessa hurried after them.

"Where are you going?""

"To my daughter's bedroom.""

"Michael, that room is being renovated.""

Emily stopped.

"What?""

Vanessa gave her a tight smile.

"I thought it would be better to turn it into a guest suite.""

Emily looked at her father.

"My room?""

Michael's eyes narrowed.

"You changed her bedroom?""

"She hasn't been using it properly.""

"She was living here.""

"Michael, please. You were gone for years. You have no idea what it has been like managing this household.""

Michael didn't answer.

He simply continued upstairs.

At the end of the hallway, Emily's bedroom door stood open.

The pink curtains were gone.

Her bookshelves were empty.

The photographs she had taped beside her mirror had disappeared.

Even the small wooden jewelry box her mother had given her was missing.

In the middle of the room stood a large white bed covered with expensive decorative pillows.

It looked like a hotel room.

Emily stepped inside.

"Where are my things?""

Vanessa remained in the doorway.

"I donated some of the old furniture.""

Emily turned around.

"You donated my mother's jewelry box?""

"It was just an old box.""

Emily's eyes filled.

"It was a gift from my mom.""

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

"Oh, for heaven's sake. Everything has to be about your mother.""

Michael stepped between them.

"Enough.""

He looked at Vanessa.

"I want every single item that belonged to Helen returned.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's unreasonable.""

"Is it?""

"Some things were sold. Some were donated. I cannot possibly remember everything.""

Michael stared at her.

"You sold my wife's belongings?""

Vanessa's voice became defensive.

"They were taking up space!""

Emily covered her mouth.

Michael slowly took out his phone.

"James?""

A man's voice answered.

"Yes, sir.""

"Come to the mansion immediately. Bring the property inventory, the household records, and the security footage from the last six months.""

Vanessa went completely still.

"Security footage?""

Michael looked at her.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because apparently, my daughter has been living in a house where her belongings disappear, her bedroom gets emptied, and her phone gets smashed.""

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"You're making this sound like some kind of crime.""

Michael slipped his phone back into his pocket.

"I haven't decided what to call it yet.""

Richard stepped forward.

"Mr. Whitmore, perhaps we should avoid making accusations without evidence.""

Michael looked directly at him.

"That's an excellent suggestion.""

He pointed toward the hallway.

"So let's start by reviewing the evidence.""

Richard's expression changed.

Michael turned back to Emily.

"Sweetheart, go wash your face. I'll have someone prepare something warm for you.""

Emily nodded.

Before she left, she turned toward her father.

"Dad?""

"Yes?""

"Can I tell you something?""

"Anything.""

She glanced nervously at Vanessa.

Michael understood.

"Nobody is going to hurt you again. I promise.""

Emily took a shaky breath.

"Vanessa has been taking documents from Mom's old study. I saw her and Richard going through the cabinets last week.""

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

"That's ridiculous!""

Emily flinched.

Michael raised one hand.

"Don't interrupt her.""

Emily continued.

"I heard Richard say something about a signature. He said they needed your signature before the end of the month.""

Michael's expression became unreadable.

"What signature?""

"I don't know. But Vanessa said something about the company and the house.""

Richard's face had become pale.

Michael slowly turned toward him.

"Interesting.""

Vanessa tried to laugh.

"She's confused. She's been under a lot of stress.""

Michael didn't look away from Richard.

"Then you won't mind explaining what documents you've been preparing in my absence.""

Richard adjusted his cuff.

"I don't know what you're referring to.""

"Good.""

Michael smiled without warmth.

"Then you should have no problem showing me your records.""

A doorbell rang downstairs.

A few minutes later, James Bennett, Michael's longtime executive assistant, entered the mansion carrying a leather document case.

He had worked for Michael for nearly fifteen years and had known Emily since she was a child.

The moment he saw her, his expression softened.

"Miss Emily.""

"Hi, James.""

He looked at the marks on her wrist.

His smile disappeared.

"Sir, what happened?""

Michael glanced at his daughter.

"Someone decided she didn't belong in her own home.""

James looked toward Vanessa.

Then he placed his document case on the dining table.

"What would you like me to do?""

"First, retrieve the security footage. Second, find out where my wife's belongings were taken. Third, I want a complete report of every financial transaction made by the household and the Whitmore estate while I was overseas.""

James nodded.

"Understood.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You cannot do that without consulting me.""

Michael looked at her.

"Consulting you?""

"I'm your wife!""

"And Emily is my daughter.""

The words landed like a slap.

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"You're choosing her over me?""

Michael looked at her for a long moment.

Then he answered.

"I shouldn't have to choose between my wife and my child. A decent wife would never have forced me to.""

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

She turned and stormed toward the staircase.

Richard followed her.

But before he disappeared around the corner, Michael called out.

"Richard.""

The man stopped.

"Yes, sir?""

"Don't leave the property.""

Richard nodded stiffly.

"Of course.""

Once they were alone, James opened his document case.

"Sir, there's something else.""

Michael looked up.

"What?""

James removed a thin folder.

"I received this from the legal department yesterday. I wasn't sure whether to bring it to your attention before you returned.""

Michael opened the folder.

His eyes moved across the first page.

Then the second.

His expression changed.

"Who authorized this?""

James lowered his voice.

"That's the problem, sir.""

Michael looked up.

"What problem?""

James pointed to the signature at the bottom of the document.

"Someone has been attempting to transfer controlling authority over Whitmore Holdings.""

Michael stared at the signature.

It looked exactly like his.

May you like

But he knew he hadn't signed it.

And the name listed as the proposed new controlling representative was Vanessa Whitmore.
