Chapter 6: The Woman Who Disappeared
The woman stood beside Michael, holding a black leather handbag.
She was in her early fifties, with shoulder-length brown hair and tired eyes.
Emily stared at her.
"You're Clara?""
The woman looked at the photograph.
Then she looked at Emily.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You're Helen's little girl.""
Emily slowly nodded.
Clara approached but stopped a few feet away.
"I've wanted to see you for a long time.""
Vanessa stood motionless.
"Michael, who is this woman?""
Michael didn't look at her.
"Her name is Clara Bennett.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
"I don't know anyone by that name.""
Clara let out a bitter laugh.
"Of course you don't. You made sure I couldn't come back.""
Michael turned toward her.
"Clara, is this the woman you told me about?""
Clara nodded.
"Yes.""
Vanessa's voice rose.
"This is ridiculous. You're bringing strangers into my home and allowing them to make accusations?""
Michael looked at her.
"Your home?""
He gestured toward the mansion.
"Let's settle that question later.""
Vanessa looked at Clara.
"Why are you here?""
Clara placed her handbag on a nearby table.
"Because Helen asked me to protect Emily if anything happened to her.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Helen was confused near the end. You know that.""
Clara's expression hardened.
"Don't you dare.""
Emily stepped closer.
"Did you know my mother?""
Clara looked at her.
"I knew her better than almost anyone. We were best friends long before she met your father.""
Emily held up the photograph.
"Mom wrote your name on the back.""
Clara nodded.
"She told me she had hidden something for you.""
"What?""
Clara glanced toward Vanessa.
"Not here.""
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
"You're not taking anything from this family.""
Michael turned.
"Vanessa, go downstairs.""
She stared at him.
"Excuse me?""
"You heard me.""
"This is my house!""
Michael's voice remained steady.
"Not according to the trust documents Daniel is reviewing.""
Vanessa's lips parted.
Michael continued.
"Until the ownership and financial investigation is complete, you will not enter my private study, the west wing, or my daughter's bedroom without permission.""
Vanessa looked at him as if he had slapped her.
"You cannot be serious.""
"Try me.""
She glanced toward Richard, who had just appeared at the far end of the hallway.
"Richard, tell him!""
Richard looked uncomfortable.
"I think we should all avoid escalating this.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"You're supposed to be helping me!""
Michael turned toward Richard.
"You're coming with me. We have some business to discuss.""
Richard's face tightened.
"I have an appointment.""
"Cancel it.""
Twenty minutes later, Clara sat in the study with Michael, Emily, and Daniel.
James had brought coffee and a fresh copy of Helen's letter.
Clara held the photograph in both hands.
"Your mother gave me this picture shortly before she died," she told Emily.
"She asked me to keep it safe.""
"Why didn't you come back?""
Clara lowered her eyes.
"Because I was threatened.""
Michael leaned forward.
"By whom?""
Clara took a slow breath.
"Vanessa.""
Emily's hands tightened around the jewelry box.
Clara continued.
"Helen discovered that Vanessa and Richard were moving money out of the family accounts. She wanted to report it, but she needed evidence.""
Daniel nodded.
"That matches what Helen told me.""
Clara looked at him.
"She had more evidence than you know.""
She opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.
Inside were three photographs and a folded document.
Michael picked up the first photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing outside a private bank with Richard.
The second showed Richard handing an envelope to a man in a gray coat.
The third showed Vanessa entering a hospital records office.
Michael stared at the photographs.
"When were these taken?""
"About two weeks before Helen died.""
Daniel examined the third photograph.
"Do you know the date?""
Clara nodded.
"February fourteenth.""
Michael looked up.
"Valentine's Day.""
"Yes.""
Clara's voice trembled.
"That was the day Helen called me crying. She said Vanessa had threatened to take Emily away from her.""
Emily's eyes widened.
"Take me away?""
Clara nodded.
"Vanessa told Helen she would convince everyone that she was unstable and incapable of caring for you.""
Michael stood.
"Why didn't Helen tell me?""
"She tried. But you were in Europe, and every time she called, someone told her your schedule had changed.""
Michael looked at James.
"Who managed my calls?""
James opened his notebook.
"At that time, Richard was coordinating some of your travel arrangements.""
Michael's expression darkened.
Clara continued.
"Helen became frightened that Vanessa would get access to Emily's inheritance. She asked me to take copies of the financial records and keep them somewhere safe.""
"Where are they?"" Michael asked.
Clara reached into the envelope and removed a small brass key.
"At a storage facility outside the city.""
Daniel took the key carefully.
"Does it contain the original documents?""
"Yes. Bank statements, correspondence, recordings, and copies of the medical authorization requests.""
Michael stared at her.
"Recordings?""
Clara nodded.
"Helen recorded a conversation between Vanessa and Richard.""
Emily looked toward her father.
"What's on it?""
Clara swallowed.
"I haven't listened to the entire recording. Helen asked me not to unless something happened to her or Emily.""
Michael's face tightened.
"Then we need to retrieve it immediately.""
An hour later, Michael, James, Daniel, and Clara drove to a private storage facility on the outskirts of the city.
Emily wanted to come, but Michael asked her to remain at the mansion with Mrs. Collins and two security officers.
Before leaving, he knelt in front of her.
"I'll be back soon.""
Emily held his hand.
"Promise?""
"I promise.""
She hesitated.
"Are you going to find out what happened to Mom?""
Michael kissed her forehead.
"Every last detail.""
At the storage facility, Clara led them to Unit 218.
The brass key opened a small metal lockbox inside the unit.
There were several folders, a sealed envelope, and an old digital recorder.
Daniel immediately began examining the documents.
"These are the original bank statements.""
James opened another folder.
"Sir, look at this.""
He handed Michael a printed email.
It was dated three days before Helen's final hospitalization.
The sender was Richard Cole.
The recipient was Vanessa Whitmore.
The subject line read:
The Final Arrangement.
Michael read the message.
His face became expressionless.
The email discussed a proposed transfer of assets and mentioned that Helen's medical condition was deteriorating.
But one sentence made his stomach turn.
Once she is no longer able to challenge the arrangement, we can complete the remaining steps.
Michael closed his eyes briefly.
Daniel looked at him.
"Michael?""
He handed over the email.
Daniel read it carefully.
"This is significant evidence of a planned financial scheme. We should preserve the original electronic source if possible.""
Clara picked up the recorder.
"Helen wanted you to hear this.""
She pressed the power button.
Static crackled.
Then Helen's voice filled the small storage room.
"Vanessa, I know about the money.""
A pause.
Another voice answered.
Vanessa.
"Then you should have kept your nose out of it.""
Helen sounded frightened but determined.
"Emily is my daughter. I will not allow you to take what belongs to her.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Your daughter won't know the difference.""
"Michael will.""
"Michael isn't here.""
"He'll come back.""
Vanessa's voice dropped.
"And what if he doesn't?""
Silence followed.
Then Richard spoke.
"Vanessa, we need to leave. She's recording.""
A sudden rustling sound followed.
Helen spoke again.
"If anything happens to me, Michael will know.""
Vanessa answered with chilling calm.
"Then let's hope he never hears this.""
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Michael stood with his hands clenched at his sides.
Daniel carefully removed the recorder.
"We need to turn this over to the authorities.""
Michael nodded.
"Yes.""
Clara looked at him.
"There is something else.""
Michael turned.
"What?""
"Helen told me that Vanessa had been receiving help from someone inside the hospital.""
Daniel frowned.
"Who?""
Clara looked down.
"I don't know the person's name. But Helen said the person had access to her medical files.""
Michael looked toward James.
"Find out.""
James nodded.
"I'll contact the hospital's compliance department.""
Back at the mansion, Emily sat in the living room.
Mrs. Collins had prepared tea, but Emily hadn't touched it.
She kept looking at the photograph.
Her mother and Clara stood together outside the hospital, smiling.
Emily wondered how many secrets her mother had carried while pretending everything was normal.
Then she heard footsteps.
Vanessa entered the living room.
She was no longer wearing her silk robe. She had changed into a cream-colored suit and carried a large handbag.
Emily stood.
"Where are you going?""
Vanessa ignored her.
"Move.""
Emily remained in front of the hallway.
"Did you know my mother was afraid of you?""
Vanessa stopped.
For a moment, the mask slipped.
Then she smiled.
"Your mother was a very emotional woman.""
Emily shook her head.
"She knew what you were doing.""
Vanessa stepped closer.
"You really think your father can protect you forever?""
Emily's voice trembled.
"He's my father.""
"And he's been gone most of your life.""
Emily went silent.
Vanessa smiled.
"Who was there when you cried yourself to sleep? Who took care of this house? Who made sure you had everything?""
"You threw me out.""
"Because you were becoming a problem.""
Emily stared at her.
Vanessa leaned closer.
"Listen carefully. Your father may believe you now, but he doesn't know everything about you.""
Emily frowned.
"What does that mean?""
Vanessa adjusted her handbag.
"It means there are things in your mother's past that would make even Michael question what kind of daughter he raised.""
Emily felt her stomach tighten.
"You're lying.""
Vanessa smiled.
"Am I?""
Before Emily could respond, Vanessa walked toward the front entrance.
Two security officers stepped in front of her.
"Ma'am, Mr. Whitmore instructed us not to allow anyone to leave with family documents or personal property.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Move.""
"We're sorry, ma'am.""
She turned toward Emily.
"This isn't over.""
Emily didn't answer.
Vanessa stormed upstairs instead.
That evening, Michael returned with Clara and James.
He found Emily waiting near the staircase.
"Dad!""
He opened his arms.
She rushed into them.
"Did you find something?""
Michael held her tightly.
"Yes, sweetheart.""
"About Mom?""
He nodded.
"Your mother left us evidence. We're going to make sure the people responsible answer for what they did.""
Emily looked past him.
"Where's Clara?""
Clara stepped forward.
"Right here.""
Emily smiled faintly.
"Will you stay?""
Clara's eyes filled.
"If that's what you want, sweetheart.""
Emily nodded.
Michael looked toward the staircase.
"Where is Vanessa?""
Mrs. Collins appeared from the hallway.
"She's upstairs, sir. She hasn't come down since you left.""
Michael nodded.
"Good.""
James approached him with a sealed document.
"Sir, the preliminary legal review is complete.""
Michael opened it.
Daniel had included an urgent notice confirming that the attempted transfer of the estate was unauthorized.
At the bottom was another detail.
The original family trust had a second beneficiary provision.
Michael read it twice.
Then he looked at Daniel's accompanying note.
The trust contains a contingency clause. If the primary beneficiary is threatened, deceived, or unlawfully deprived of her residence, the independent trustee may immediately activate additional protections.
Michael looked up.
"Daniel, what does this mean?""
James answered quietly.
"It means Vanessa's actions may have triggered the clause.""
Michael turned the page.
A name appeared beneath the provision.
The independent trustee.
Not Michael.
Not Vanessa.
Someone else.
Michael stared at the name.
"Why didn't Helen tell me?""
Daniel's note contained one final sentence.
The trustee is the only person authorized to release the sealed evidence of Helen's final instructions.
Michael read the name again.
His expression changed.
Because the person Helen had appointed to protect Emily was someone nobody in the mansion had mentioned in three years.
May you like
And according to the attached contact information, that person was already on the way.
*Her name was Vanessa's former attorney.*
