Chapter 7: The Attorney Who Knew Everything

"Her name was Vanessa's former attorney.""

Michael read the sentence again.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"You're telling me Vanessa's own attorney was appointed to protect Emily?""

Daniel nodded.

"Not exactly her attorney anymore. Her name is Margaret Lawson. She represented Vanessa during her first marriage, but she also handled several private estate matters for Helen.""

Michael frowned.

"Why would Helen trust someone connected to Vanessa?""

"Because Margaret discovered the financial irregularities before anyone else. She tried to warn Vanessa that what she was doing could expose her to criminal liability.""

"And Vanessa fired her?""

"Yes. Shortly afterward, Helen contacted Margaret privately.""

Emily sat beside her father, holding the small photograph of her mother and Clara.

"Is this woman coming here?""

"Yes, sweetheart," Michael answered.

"Can I talk to her?""

"Of course.""

Daniel closed his folder.

"There's something important you should understand. Margaret isn't simply holding paperwork. Helen appointed her as the independent protector of the trust. She has the authority to challenge unauthorized transactions, preserve evidence, and prevent anyone from interfering with Emily's inheritance.""

Michael looked at the document again.

"Then why hasn't she contacted us before now?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Because she wasn't supposed to reveal her appointment until the contingency clause was activated.""

James glanced toward the hallway.

"And that happened when Vanessa threw Emily out?""

"Precisely," Daniel replied.

Michael slowly exhaled.

His wife had anticipated something like this.

She had prepared for the possibility that he might return too late to stop it.

And she had made sure their daughter would still have someone standing between her and the people trying to take everything.

At 10:15 the following morning, a silver sedan pulled into the mansion's driveway.

A woman stepped out.

She was in her late fifties, dressed in a charcoal-gray suit, with a structured leather briefcase in one hand.

Michael watched from the entrance.

"Margaret?""

She approached and extended her hand.

"Michael Whitmore. It's been a long time.""

He shook it.

"Too long.""

Margaret glanced toward the staircase.

"Where is Emily?""

"Inside.""

"Good. I'd like to see her before we discuss anything else.""

Emily came down the stairs.

The moment Margaret saw her, her expression softened.

"Hello, Emily.""

"Hi.""

Margaret knelt slightly so they were at eye level.

"I knew your mother very well. She spoke about you constantly.""

Emily smiled sadly.

"Did she really?""

"She kept a photograph of you on her desk. You were wearing a yellow raincoat and holding a stuffed rabbit.""

Emily's eyes widened.

"That's my favorite picture!""

Margaret laughed gently.

"I thought it might be.""

She reached into her briefcase and removed a small envelope.

"Your mother asked me to give you something if this day ever came.""

Emily accepted it carefully.

Inside was a handwritten note.

My darling Emily,

If Margaret is giving you this letter, it means someone has tried to make you feel powerless in the place where you should feel safest.

Never believe them.

You are not an inconvenience. You are not a burden. You are not someone else's responsibility to tolerate.

You are my daughter, and you deserve a life where you never have to beg anyone to love you.

I wish I could be there to hold your hand.

But I am always with you.

All my love,

Mom.

Emily pressed the letter against her chest.

Michael put an arm around her.

Margaret waited quietly until Emily had finished crying.

Then she looked at Michael.

"Now we need to discuss the trust.""

The family gathered in the private study.

Daniel sat beside Margaret, while James placed the financial reports across the desk.

Clara remained near Emily.

Margaret opened her briefcase and removed a thick legal folder.

"Helen established the Whitmore Family Protection Trust eleven months before her death. The purpose was straightforward: preserve Emily's inheritance and prevent unauthorized control over family assets.""

Michael nodded.

"I know about the trust.""

"Then you should know that Helen included an additional provision.""

Margaret turned to a marked page.

"If Emily is unlawfully removed from the family residence, denied access to her personal inheritance, or subjected to coercion intended to force her to surrender her rights, the independent trustee may immediately suspend all pending discretionary transfers.""

Michael looked at Daniel.

"So Vanessa triggered the provision by throwing her out.""

"Yes," Margaret answered.

Emily looked confused.

"Does that mean I own the house?""

Margaret smiled.

"Not quite. It means the house is protected by the trust established for your benefit. You have enforceable rights concerning the property, and Vanessa cannot simply decide that you no longer belong here.""

Emily glanced at her father.

"So I wasn't supposed to leave?""

Michael gently squeezed her hand.

"No, sweetheart. You were never supposed to be thrown out.""

Margaret continued.

"There's another reason I came today.""

She removed a sealed document from her briefcase.

"Helen instructed me to release this only after an independent investigation confirmed an attempt to manipulate the trust.""

Michael stared at the envelope.

"What's inside?""

"An amendment to the trust and a confidential statement.""

"From Helen?""

Margaret nodded.

Michael carefully opened the envelope.

The amendment confirmed that Emily was the sole primary beneficiary of the protected estate.

But the confidential statement contained something unexpected.

Helen had written about a secret account that had never appeared in the company's official records.

An account holding nearly twelve million dollars.

Michael looked up.

"Twelve million?""

Margaret nodded.

"Helen transferred the money into the trust before she died. It was intended to fund Emily's education, living expenses, and future independence.""

"Why didn't I know about it?""

"She wanted it protected from the financial misconduct she had uncovered.""

Michael looked at the account statement.

Then he noticed a series of withdrawals.

His expression hardened.

"These transactions occurred after Helen died.""

Margaret nodded.

"Exactly.""

James leaned closer.

"Who authorized them?""

Margaret turned the page.

A company name appeared.

Cole Financial Advisory.

Richard's private firm.

Michael stood.

"How much did he take?""

"Approximately two million dollars. The final amount will depend on the forensic audit.""

Emily looked horrified.

"That money was Mom's?""

"It was meant for you," Margaret answered gently.

Emily lowered her head.

"Why would anyone take money meant for me?""

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Michael spoke.

"Because they thought they could get away with it.""

Margaret closed the folder.

"There's one more document you need to see.""

She removed a photograph of an old signature page.

Michael recognized Helen's handwriting.

But beneath it was another signature.

Vanessa's.

Margaret placed the page beside the trust agreement.

"Vanessa attempted to become an authorized beneficiary representative three months after Helen died.""

Michael stared at the page.

"How?""

"She submitted a document claiming that Helen had verbally appointed her to oversee Emily's financial interests.""

"Was that legitimate?""

"No.""

Margaret tapped the signature.

"Because Helen explicitly rejected that arrangement in a signed statement.""

Michael looked at Daniel.

"Then why was the document accepted?""

Daniel's face darkened.

"It wasn't accepted by the trustee. But it was used to obtain access to several household and administrative accounts.""

Margaret nodded.

"And that is where Richard became involved.""

Upstairs, Vanessa was listening from behind the partially closed study door.

She had heard enough.

She quietly stepped away and entered her dressing room.

Richard was waiting.

"What happened?""

Vanessa closed the door.

"Margaret Lawson is here.""

Richard stood up.

"That's impossible.""

"She's sitting downstairs with Michael.""

He cursed under his breath.

"Then we're finished.""

Vanessa slapped her hand against the dressing table.

"Stop saying that!""

"She has the original trust documents. She can freeze everything.""

"Then we get the documents before she does anything.""

Richard stared at her.

"How?""

Vanessa opened a drawer and removed a small USB drive.

"Remember the files I copied from Michael's study?""

Richard nodded.

"I thought you deleted them.""

"I kept a backup.""

She held it up.

"This contains the original account access credentials and the old authorization records.""

Richard looked nervous.

"Why would you keep that?""

"Insurance.""

He lowered his voice.

"If Margaret sees those records, she'll know everything.""

Vanessa smiled coldly.

"Not if we make sure she never gets them.""

Richard shook his head.

"Vanessa, this is getting out of control.""

She stepped toward him.

"You were the one who told me we could take the money.""

"I said we could move it temporarily.""

"You signed the documents.""

"And you approved the transfers!""

Vanessa's expression changed.

For the first time, they were no longer speaking like partners.

They were speaking like two people looking for someone else to blame.

Richard moved toward the door.

"I'm leaving.""

Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.

"You aren't going anywhere.""

He pulled away.

"Don't touch me.""

She stared at him.

"After everything I've done for you?""

Richard laughed bitterly.

"You've done nothing for me except promise that Michael would never find out.""

A sudden knock came from the hallway.

Both froze.

James's voice sounded through the door.

"Mrs. Whitmore? Mr. Whitmore requests your presence downstairs.""

Vanessa slipped the USB drive into her handbag.

"Tell him I'll be there.""

James remained outside.

"Immediately, ma'am.""

When Vanessa entered the study, everyone was waiting.

Michael stood beside the desk.

Margaret sat with the legal documents.

Richard followed a few seconds later.

Michael looked at his wife.

"Sit down.""

Vanessa remained standing.

"I don't need to be interrogated.""

"Then consider this a conversation.""

Margaret placed a document on the table.

"This is a formal notice suspending your authority over the Whitmore Family Protection Trust.""

Vanessa glanced at it.

Then she laughed.

"You can't do that.""

"I can," Margaret replied calmly.

"And I have.""

Vanessa turned toward Michael.

"You're allowing this woman to interfere with our marriage?""

Michael's expression didn't change.

"She is protecting my daughter.""

Vanessa pointed toward Emily.

"She has everything! The house, the inheritance, the company! What more does she want?""

Emily stood.

"I want my mother's things back.""

Vanessa stared at her.

"You're being ridiculous.""

"I want my bedroom back.""

"Emily—"

"And I want you to stop pretending you care about me.""

Vanessa's face twisted.

Michael stepped forward.

"That's enough.""

Margaret opened another folder.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I have a question about the twelve million dollars transferred from the family trust.""

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"What money?""

"The money you and Richard attempted to access.""

"I don't know anything about that.""

Margaret turned a page.

"Then perhaps you can explain why your signature appears on the transfer authorization.""

Vanessa looked at Richard.

He stared at the floor.

Michael noticed.

"Richard?""

Richard swallowed.

"Mr. Whitmore, I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

Richard opened his mouth.

But before he could speak, Vanessa suddenly reached into her handbag.

She removed the USB drive.

"Fine!""

Everyone turned.

Vanessa held it up.

"You want the truth? Here's the truth.""

Michael looked at the drive.

"What is that?""

Vanessa smiled bitterly.

"Something your wife never wanted you to see.""

May you like

Then she turned toward Emily.

"And something that might change what you think you know about your mother.""
