Chapter 5: The Secret Hidden in the Medical Records
Michael stared at his phone.
The message had no name attached.
No explanation.
Just two sentences that reopened wounds he had spent three years trying to live with.
Daniel noticed his expression.
"What happened?""
Michael handed him the phone.
Daniel read the messages.
"Do you recognize the number?""
"No.""
James stepped forward.
"Sir, I can ask our security team to trace the sender through the available records.""
"Do that.""
Emily looked frightened.
"Dad, what does it mean?""
Michael crouched beside her.
"Someone may have information about your mother's final days.""
"Does that mean Vanessa did something?""
"We don't know yet.""
"But Mom was scared of her.""
Michael gently touched her cheek.
"I know.""
Emily looked down.
"I always thought I imagined that night.""
"You didn't.""
Michael stood and turned toward Daniel.
"I want the original medical records.""
Daniel nodded.
"I'll contact the hospital.""
"And I want to know who had access to Helen's treatment during her final week.""
"Understood.""
Daniel closed his briefcase.
"One more thing, Michael. You should know that Helen specifically instructed me to contact an independent investigator if anything happened to Emily.""
Michael's expression darkened.
"Did she name anyone?""
Daniel nodded.
"Former Detective Robert Hayes. He handled a financial fraud investigation for the family several years ago.""
"Contact him.""
"I'll do it tonight.""
Upstairs, Vanessa was pacing in her dressing room.
Richard stood beside the window, speaking in a low voice on his phone.
"No, we have a problem," he whispered.
"Michael found the boxes.""
He listened.
Then his face tightened.
"I said he found them.""
Vanessa snatched the phone from his hand.
"Give me that.""
She ended the call and threw it onto the sofa.
"Who was that?""
Richard rubbed his forehead.
"Someone who wants to know whether the transfer is still possible.""
Vanessa stared at him.
"Tell them it's still possible.""
"Not if Michael brings in Daniel Reeves.""
Her eyes flashed.
"Then we make sure Daniel doesn't get involved.""
Richard looked at her.
"How?""
Vanessa walked to her dressing table and opened a drawer.
Inside was a small black folder.
She removed a printed document.
"Do you remember the agreement Helen signed shortly before she died?""
Richard nodded.
"The medical consent form?""
"Exactly.""
"That has nothing to do with the inheritance.""
Vanessa gave him a cold smile.
"It has everything to do with the inheritance if we can prove Helen wasn't mentally competent when she established the trust.""
Richard studied the paper.
"You're planning to challenge the trust?""
"I'm planning to take back what should have been mine from the beginning.""
Richard lowered his voice.
"And Emily?""
Vanessa closed the folder.
"Emily is a problem.""
"She's already told Michael about us.""
"Then we need to make sure he stops believing her.""
Richard hesitated.
"How?""
Vanessa looked toward the mirror.
"Michael has always been protective of his daughter. But he has one weakness.""
"What?""
"His guilt.""
She turned.
"He wasn't here when Helen died. He wasn't here when Emily needed him. And if I remind him of that, perhaps he'll finally understand that I was the only person keeping this family together.""
Richard frowned.
"That won't work if he sees the records.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Then he won't see them.""
At nine the following morning, Michael stood in the private conference room of Whitmore Holdings.
Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city.
A long glass table occupied the center of the room, surrounded by twelve leather chairs.
James placed a stack of reports in front of him.
"Sir, the preliminary audit is complete.""
Michael opened the first file.
"How bad?""
James took a breath.
"Several payments were made from company accounts to businesses registered under names connected to Richard Cole.""
"Amounts?""
"Approximately four point eight million dollars over three years.""
Michael stared at the pages.
"Four point eight million?""
"Yes, sir.""
"Where did it go?""
"We're still tracing the full amount. However, some of the funds were used to purchase real estate and luxury vehicles.""
Michael turned another page.
"Who approved the payments?""
James pointed to several authorization forms.
"These signatures appear to be yours.""
Michael examined them.
"They're not.""
"We suspected that.""
"Have the originals been preserved?""
"Every one of them.""
Michael closed the file.
"Then this is no longer an internal accounting issue.""
"No, sir.""
The conference-room door opened.
Daniel Reeves entered with a woman carrying a large medical folder.
"Michael, this is Dr. Elaine Porter. She was one of Helen's attending physicians.""
Michael immediately stood.
"Doctor.""
She shook his hand.
"I'm sorry we have to meet under these circumstances.""
"Do you know why I asked you here?""
Daniel answered.
"She received a copy of the message about Helen's medical records.""
Dr. Porter placed the folder on the table.
"I reviewed what remains in the hospital archive. Unfortunately, some original pages are missing.""
Michael's expression hardened.
"Missing?""
"Several medication administration records from Helen's final forty-eight hours.""
"How does that happen?""
"It shouldn't.""
Dr. Porter opened the folder.
"However, I found a discrepancy in the discharge and consent documentation.""
Michael leaned forward.
"Explain.""
"Three days before Helen died, an additional medication was requested under an authorization bearing your name.""
Michael frowned.
"I was overseas.""
"I know. The hospital contacted your office because the signature didn't match the authorization we had on file.""
"Who requested it?""
Dr. Porter looked down at her notes.
"Vanessa Whitmore.""
Michael's hands tightened.
"What medication?""
Dr. Porter hesitated.
"An additional sedative. It was not administered until the prescribing physician reviewed the request.""
Michael exhaled slowly.
"Was it administered?""
"One dose was recorded. However, the record doesn't establish that it caused any harm. Helen was already critically ill, and I cannot draw a medical conclusion from incomplete documentation.""
Michael nodded.
"I understand.""
Dr. Porter continued.
"There's another issue. The consent form attached to that request was signed by someone claiming to have authority to make medical decisions on Helen's behalf.""
Michael stared at her.
"Who?""
Dr. Porter turned the page.
"Vanessa.""
Michael looked toward Daniel.
"Was Vanessa authorized?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not under the documents I prepared.""
The room fell silent.
Michael looked back at the doctor.
"Can you confirm who signed the form?""
"I can confirm that the signature is recorded under Vanessa's name. I cannot independently verify who physically wrote it.""
Michael nodded.
"Thank you, Doctor.""
Dr. Porter gathered her papers.
"I also found a note from Helen's final consultation. She requested that the hospital contact you directly if anyone attempted to change her treatment plan.""
Michael's voice became quiet.
"Did anyone contact me?""
"No record of that call exists.""
The doctor left the room.
Michael remained standing.
For three years, he had believed he had failed to return in time because of circumstances beyond his control.
Now he wondered whether someone had deliberately kept him away from information that might have changed everything.
Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Michael, we need to be careful. Suspicion isn't proof.""
"I know.""
"Whatever happened, we need the complete records before drawing conclusions.""
Michael nodded.
"Then find them.""
James approached with another folder.
"Sir, there's something else from the security footage.""
Michael turned.
"What?""
"Yesterday's footage shows Vanessa entering the west-wing storage room twice before your arrival. But there's another recording.""
James placed a tablet on the table.
"She entered your private study three nights ago.""
Michael frowned.
"At what time?""
"Two seventeen in the morning.""
He played the recording.
The image showed Vanessa entering the study with a small flashlight.
She went directly to Michael's desk.
Opened the bottom drawer.
Removed a black leather notebook.
Then she photographed several pages with her phone.
Michael recognized the notebook.
It contained handwritten notes about the company's private trust arrangements.
He leaned closer.
"Where did she take it?""
James paused the footage.
"That's what we haven't established.""
Michael looked at the frozen image.
"Find it.""
James nodded.
"Yes, sir.""
Back at the mansion, Emily sat in her bedroom holding her mother's wooden jewelry box.
She had placed several photographs on the bed.
One showed her at eight years old, sitting on Michael's shoulders at the beach.
Another showed Helen holding a birthday cake.
Emily smiled sadly.
Then she noticed something unusual.
A tiny folded piece of paper was tucked beneath the velvet lining of the jewelry box.
She carefully pulled it out.
It was a photograph.
Her mother stood beside a younger woman in front of a hospital building.
On the back, Helen had written:
For Emily. When the time is right, find Clara.
Emily turned the photograph over again.
She had never seen the woman before.
Just then, Mrs. Collins knocked.
"Miss Emily? Your father asked me to bring you some tea.""
Emily held up the photograph.
"Mrs. Collins, do you know who this is?""
The older woman's face changed immediately.
She stepped closer.
Then she whispered a name.
"Clara Bennett.""
Emily frowned.
"Who is she?""
Mrs. Collins glanced toward the hallway.
"She was your mother's closest friend.""
"Where is she now?""
Mrs. Collins looked frightened.
"She disappeared shortly after your mother passed away.""
Emily stared at the photograph.
"Why?""
Mrs. Collins swallowed.
"Because she knew something about Vanessa.""
Before Emily could ask another question, a loud crash came from downstairs.
Then Vanessa's voice rang through the mansion.
"WHERE IS THE PHOTOGRAPH?""
Emily froze.
Mrs. Collins looked toward the door.
Vanessa appeared at the end of the hallway.
Her eyes were fixed on the small picture in Emily's hand.
"Give it to me.""
Emily stood up.
"No.""
Vanessa rushed forward.
"That belongs to me!""
Emily stepped backward.
"It's my mother's photograph!""
Vanessa reached for it.
But before she could touch Emily, another voice cut through the hallway.
"Take one more step toward my daughter, Vanessa, and you'll regret it.""
Michael stood at the top of the staircase.
May you like
And beside him was a woman Emily had never seen before.
A woman who looked exactly like the stranger in her mother's photograph.
