Chapter 8: The Daughter Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

Marcus arrived at the intensive care unit at 9:06 a.m.

Richard was awake.

A doctor stood beside his bed, checking the monitors.

Detective Miller waited near the window.

When Marcus entered, his father turned his head.

“Son.””

Marcus remained standing.

“Don't.””

Richard looked at him.

“I know what Claire told you.””

“Then you know I have nothing to say to you.””

Richard closed his eyes.

“Your mother deserved better.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“She deserved better than you.””

Richard didn't argue.

For the first time in Marcus's life, his father looked small.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just an old man lying in a hospital bed, surrounded by machines.

“Did you kill her?”” Marcus asked.

Richard stared at the ceiling.

“Yes.””

The answer was so quiet that Marcus almost didn't hear it.

But it was enough.

He stepped backward.

“Why?””

Richard swallowed.

“She found out about the money.””

“So you killed her for money?””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Losing everything.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You lost everything the moment you touched her car.””

Richard's eyes filled.

“I know.””

“Did Vanessa know?””

Richard nodded.

“She found out years later.””

“How?””

“She discovered the original trust documents. She threatened to expose me unless I gave her control.””

Marcus stared.

“So you helped her.””

“I thought I could control her.””

Marcus laughed.

“You couldn't even control yourself.””

Richard turned his head.

“Marcus, listen. Vanessa doesn't want the money for herself.””

“Then what does she want?””

Richard hesitated.

“She wants to erase the family that Thomas believed belonged to him.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked toward Detective Miller.

“Do you have the USB?””

The detective nodded.

“It's being analyzed.””

Richard shook his head.

“Don't wait.””

He looked at Marcus.

“Play the file marked FAMILY. You'll understand.””

Marcus stared.

“What's on it?””

Richard's lips trembled.

“The truth about Vanessa's birth.””

At 10:30 a.m., Detective Miller brought Marcus into a secure conference room.

The USB drive had been copied and scanned.

A technician opened the folder.

There were several files.

BANK RECORDS.

TRUST DOCUMENTS.

FAMILY.

Marcus clicked the last one.

A video appeared.

His mother sat at a desk.

She looked younger than Marcus remembered.

Her hair was tied back.

Her face was pale.

But her voice was steady.

“If you're watching this, then Richard has failed to keep the truth buried.””

Marcus gripped the edge of the table.

His mother continued.

“My son, I wish I could have told you everything while I was alive.””

She looked down at a piece of paper.

“Thomas Vale was my first love. I believed he would build a life with me. But when I became pregnant, he chose his business and his reputation over us.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

His mother continued.

“Richard knew about the relationship. He married me anyway. He raised Marcus as his own son, but he never forgave me for loving someone else.””

A pause.

“Years later, Thomas returned. He had a daughter named Vanessa. He told me he wanted to reconnect with his family.””

Marcus frowned.

His mother looked directly into the camera.

“But Vanessa was not simply Thomas's daughter. She had been raised to believe that the Reed family stole everything from her.””

The video cut to another recording.

A younger Vanessa stood in the same house.

She looked about twenty.

Her voice was angry.

“Why does Marcus get everything? Why does he get the company, the house, the inheritance?””

Thomas answered from somewhere off-camera.

“Because Richard raised him.””

“And what about me?””

“You have your own future.””

“I want what belongs to my mother.””

A long silence followed.

Then Thomas said something that made Marcus's blood run cold.

“Then you will have to make the family give it to you.””

The video ended.

Marcus stared at the screen.

Detective Miller paused the recording.

“That's not all.””

He opened another file.

It contained a scanned document.

A private adoption agreement.

Marcus leaned forward.

The document listed Richard Reed as the legal father of Marcus.

But the biological father's name was Thomas Vale.

Marcus felt numb.

His father wasn't his biological father.

Thomas was.

Which meant Vanessa was not his half-sister.

She was his half-sister through their biological father.

He looked at the detective.

“Why would my mother hide this?””

“Probably to protect you.””

Marcus stared at the document.

Then he noticed something else.

The date.

It had been signed shortly after his birth.

His mother had known.

Richard had known.

And Thomas had known.

Everyone had built their lives around a secret.

Everyone except Marcus.

At noon, Detective Miller received a call.

His expression changed as he listened.

Then he looked at Marcus.

“What?””

He ended the call.

“Vanessa has been located.””

“Where?””

“At the Hawthorne Estate.””

Marcus stood.

“What is she doing there?””

“She's looking for something.””

“The trust?””

The detective shook his head.

“No. She's looking for Ava.””

Marcus grabbed his jacket.

“Then we're going.””

“Mr. Reed, wait.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

“We have a team moving in.””

“I don't care.””

“Vanessa is armed.””

Marcus stopped.

The detective held his gaze.

“Do not approach her unless we tell you to.””

Marcus nodded.

But he was already thinking about his daughter.

At the hospital, Claire was trying to calm Ava.

The little girl had begun asking questions.

“Mommy, why does Aunt Vanessa hate us?””

Claire brushed her hair.

“She doesn't hate you, baby.””

“Then why did she put you in the pool?””

Claire swallowed.

“Sometimes adults become confused about what is right and wrong.””

Ava looked down.

“Did I do something bad?””

Claire immediately pulled her close.

“No. Never.””

Ava began crying.

“I just wanted everyone to be happy at Daddy's wedding.””

Claire kissed her forehead.

“You saved my life.””

Ava sniffed.

“Really?””

“Yes.””

The door opened.

A nurse entered.

“Mrs. Reed, we need to move you to another room.””

Claire looked up.

“Why?””

“Security protocol.””

Ava grabbed her hand.

“Is Aunt Vanessa coming?””

The nurse hesitated.

“No, sweetheart.””

But Claire noticed the way she avoided eye contact.

Something was wrong.

She reached for the emergency call button.

Before she could press it, the nurse locked the door.

Claire stared.

“What's happening?””

The nurse removed her mask.

It wasn't a nurse.

It was a man.

Ava screamed.

Claire pulled her daughter behind her.

“Who are you?””

The man took a step forward.

“I'm here to collect something.””

Claire grabbed the metal water pitcher from the bedside table.

“Stay away from my daughter.””

He laughed.

“You don't understand. This isn't about your daughter.””

He pointed toward Ava's wrist.

“It's about the key.””

Claire looked at the empty bracelet space.

Ava had kept the original charm.

But she wasn't wearing it.

It was in Marcus's pocket.

“It's gone,” Claire said.

The man shook his head.

“Then we'll take the girl.””

He lunged.

Claire swung the pitcher.

It struck his shoulder.

He stumbled backward.

Ava ran toward the bathroom.

“Mommy!””

“Lock the door!””

Claire threw herself against the attacker.

He shoved her into the bedside table.

Her head struck the edge.

She collapsed.

The man rushed toward the bathroom.

But before he reached it, the door opened.

A hospital security guard charged inside.

“POLICE! GET DOWN!””

The attacker turned.

A second guard tackled him.

The man fought violently.

Ava screamed from the bathroom.

Claire struggled to lift her head.

“Baby?””

The bathroom door opened.

Ava ran out and dropped beside her mother.

“Mommy!””

Claire reached for her.

“I'm okay.””

But her eyes were already losing focus.

Marcus arrived twenty minutes later.

He found the hospital corridor full of police officers.

Claire was being examined by a doctor.

Ava was wrapped in a blanket.

He rushed toward them.

“Claire!””

She looked up.

“Marcus.””

He dropped beside the bed.

“Are you hurt?””

“I'm fine.””

“Where's Ava?””

Ava appeared from behind a nurse.

“Daddy!””

He pulled her into his arms.

“I'm here.””

She began crying.

“He wanted my bracelet.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“It's okay.””

“He said he wanted me.””

Marcus looked toward the security officers.

“Who was he?””

Detective Miller approached.

“His name is Daniel Pierce.””

Marcus went cold.

“Adrian Vale?””

Miller nodded.

“He used a fake hospital identification card. He was trying to reach your daughter.””

Marcus looked at Claire.

“Did he say anything?””

Claire nodded.

“He said Vanessa was waiting.””

“Where?””

“The estate.””

Marcus stood.

“Then let's end this.””

Detective Miller shook his head.

“We already have officers there.””

Marcus looked down at Ava.

“Stay with Mommy.””

Ava grabbed his sleeve.

“Daddy, don't go.””

He crouched.

“I have to stop the bad people.””

She looked at him.

“Will you come back?””

He kissed her forehead.

“Always.””

Then he turned toward Detective Miller.

“Take me to Vanessa.””

The Hawthorne Estate looked abandoned.

The wedding decorations were still scattered across the terrace.

The white flowers had begun to wilt.

The wedding arch stood empty.

A few chairs lay overturned.

Marcus stepped onto the terrace.

He could still see the place where he had stood that morning.

The place where Vanessa had threatened to throw her ring into the pool.

The pool itself was now surrounded by police tape.

Detective Miller pointed toward the glass doors.

“She was seen entering the west wing.””

Marcus walked inside.

His shoes echoed across the marble floor.

Then he heard a familiar voice.

“Marcus.””

Vanessa stood at the top of the staircase.

She was no longer wearing her wedding dress.

Instead, she wore black trousers and a dark coat.

Her hair was tied back.

She held a small pistol.

Marcus stopped.

“Put it down.””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

“You always were so dramatic.””

“Where's Adrian?””

“He's busy.””

“Where is he?””

“Your precious detective has him.””

Marcus looked at the gun.

“Why did you try to kill Claire?””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Because she wouldn't give me what belonged to me.””

“What belonged to you?””

“My father's inheritance.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Your father left you nothing.””

Vanessa laughed.

“That's what Richard told everyone.””

She stepped down one stair.

“But Thomas promised me everything.””

“Thomas used you.””

“He loved me.””

“He used you to steal from my family.””

Vanessa raised the gun slightly.

“Your family?””

She laughed.

“Marcus, you don't even know who you are.””

He stared.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“You think I wanted to marry you because I loved you?””

Marcus said nothing.

“I wanted the trust. I wanted the company. I wanted the house.””

She paused.

“And I wanted you to understand what it felt like to have everything taken away.””

“Why?””

“Because your mother chose you.””

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

Vanessa's voice broke.

“She gave you the name. She gave you the company. She gave you the inheritance. Even after Thomas abandoned her, she still protected you.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You're his daughter.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Yes.””

“I'm his son too.””

Her smile disappeared.

For the first time, she looked genuinely shocked.

“You know?””

“I know everything.””

Vanessa lowered the gun slightly.

Then she whispered something Marcus hadn't expected.

“No, Marcus.””

She took another step down.

“You know what your mother wanted you to believe.””

She reached into her coat.

And removed a photograph.

It showed a newborn baby.

A baby wearing a hospital bracelet.

Marcus stared.

It was Ava.

Vanessa looked at him.

“There's one more secret about your daughter.””

She held the photograph toward him.

“Claire didn't give birth to Ava.””

Marcus felt the floor disappear beneath his feet.

“What?””

May you like

Vanessa smiled.

“Your daughter was switched at birth.””
