Chapter 2: The Ring That Wasn't Hers

“Where did you get that?””
Marcus's voice sounded unfamiliar even to himself.
Vanessa looked down at the ring in her hand.
Then she closed her fingers around it.
“Marcus, darling, please. This is not the time.””
He stood between her and Claire.
“Where did you get Claire's ring?””
Vanessa glanced at the guests.
A few people had already taken out their phones.
“This is a private family matter.””
“You're holding my ex-wife's wedding ring.””
“Claire gave it to me.””
Claire tried to sit up.
“No.””
The word was weak.
But it was clear.
Vanessa's face hardened.
“Claire, don't start.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Don't speak to her.””
Ava knelt beside her mother, holding her hand.
“Mommy, are you okay?””
Claire struggled to lift her free hand and touched her daughter's cheek.
“I'm okay, baby.””
Then she looked at Marcus.
“Please listen to me.””
The sound of approaching sirens interrupted her.
Two paramedics hurried through the garden carrying medical equipment.
One knelt beside Claire.
“Ma'am, can you tell me your name?””
“Claire Reed.””
“Do you know where you are?””
“The Hawthorne Estate.””
“Do you remember what happened?””
Claire's eyes shifted toward Vanessa.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then she whispered, “I was pushed.””
The nearest paramedic exchanged a look with his colleague.
Marcus felt his stomach tighten.
“Who pushed you?””
Claire swallowed.
“Vanessa.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That's a lie!””
The paramedic raised his hand.
“Ma'am, please give us some room.””
“You don't understand,” Vanessa said.
“Claire has a history of making accusations.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“What accusations?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“She has always been jealous of our relationship.””
Claire began coughing.
Marcus knelt beside her.
“Don't talk. Save your strength.””
But Claire caught his sleeve.
“No, Marcus. You need to know.””
“Know what?””
She looked toward Ava.
“Not here.””
Vanessa laughed sharply.
“Of course. Another dramatic performance.””
A security guard stepped closer.
“Ma'am, I need you to stay back.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Do you know who I am?””
“Yes, ma'am. But I still need you to stay back.””
The paramedics placed Claire on a stretcher.
Marcus reached for Ava.
“Come here, sweetheart.””
Ava ran into his arms.
Her little body was trembling.
He held her against his chest.
“I'm here. You're safe.””
She buried her face in his wet shirt.
“I told you, Daddy.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“I know.””
“I tried to tell the lady, but she wouldn't let me.””
“What lady?””
Ava pointed toward the wedding coordinator.
The woman stood near the flower arrangements, looking pale.
Marcus approached her.
“What happened?””
The coordinator, a woman named Denise, twisted her hands.
“I was told to keep Ava away from the pool.””
“By whom?””
She looked at Vanessa.
“By the bride.””
Vanessa's expression turned furious.
“Denise, watch what you say.””
The coordinator swallowed.
“She told me Ava was having a tantrum and that I shouldn't let her disturb the ceremony.””
Marcus stared at her.
“And when Ava told you her mother was in the water?””
Denise lowered her eyes.
“I thought she was confused.””
“Did you check?””
“No.””
Marcus looked toward the pool.
The silver chain was still visible near the bottom.
He turned back.
“Someone tried to kill Claire.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Stop saying that!””
“Then explain the chain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
For the first time that afternoon, the guests were no longer looking at Marcus and Vanessa as a happy couple.
They were looking at them as witnesses to something terrible.
The ambulance took Claire to Charleston Memorial Hospital.
Marcus rode with her while Ava sat beside him, wrapped in a blanket.
Vanessa followed in a black luxury SUV.
She kept calling.
Marcus ignored the first four calls.
On the fifth, he answered.
“What?””
Her voice was trembling now.
“Marcus, please. You need to come back.””
“Why?””
“Because this is getting out of control.””
“My ex-wife nearly died.””
“She fell!””
“She was chained to the bottom of a pool!””
“I don't know anything about that!””
“Then why did she say you pushed her?””
Vanessa was silent.
Then she whispered, “Because she's trying to destroy us.””
Marcus looked at Claire.
Her eyes were closed.
A paramedic was checking her pulse.
He lowered his voice.
“Don't come near my daughter.””
“Marcus, you're making a huge mistake.””
“No. I think I made it months ago.””
He ended the call.
At the hospital, Claire was taken into an examination room.
Ava fell asleep in a chair, her little fingers still wrapped around Marcus's wedding jacket.
Marcus sat beside her.
His phone vibrated.
A message from Vanessa appeared.
*We need to talk before you make a decision you'll regret.*
He didn't answer.
Another message arrived.
*Remember who paid for your company when you were about to lose everything.*
Marcus stared at the screen.
Vanessa had invested money in his construction business eight months earlier.
At the time, he'd been grateful.
His company had been struggling after a major commercial project collapsed.
Vanessa had introduced him to a private investment group and arranged a substantial loan.
She'd said she believed in him.
Now the memory felt different.
He opened his banking application.
The money had come from an investment company called Vantage Capital Holdings.
He searched the name.
The company had no public website.
No listed office.
No obvious business history.
Marcus frowned.
A nurse approached.
“Mr. Reed?””
He stood.
“Is Claire okay?””
“She is stable. The doctor would like to speak with you shortly.””
“Can I see her?””
“For a few minutes.””
He entered the room.
Claire was awake.
A blanket covered her shoulders, and an oxygen tube rested beneath her nose.
She looked exhausted.
But her eyes were clear.
Marcus pulled a chair close to the bed.
“Tell me what happened.””
Claire stared at her hands.
“I came here because Ava forgot her stuffed rabbit.””
Marcus nodded.
“I know.””
“I was leaving when Vanessa approached me.””
“What did she want?””
“She said she needed to discuss something important about Ava.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“What?””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“She said she had proof that you were planning to take Ava away from me.””
Marcus frowned.
“That's ridiculous.””
“I knew it. But she showed me a document with your signature.””
“What document?””
“A custody agreement.””
Marcus shook his head.
“I never signed anything.””
“I know that now.””
Claire's voice cracked.
“She told me you had agreed to give Vanessa full parental authority after the wedding. She said she would become Ava's legal guardian and that you wanted me out of the picture.””
Marcus felt cold.
“That's impossible.””
“That's what I told her.””
Claire turned her head toward the window.
“She got angry. Then she said something I couldn't forget.””
“What?””
Claire looked directly at him.
“She said, 'Once Marcus marries me, there won't be anyone left to challenge what I've built.''”
Marcus stared at her.
“What has she built?””
“I don't know.””
Claire's breathing became uneven.
“She wanted me to sign a paper. I refused.””
“What happened next?””
“She grabbed my arm. I tried to walk away. She pushed me through the side gate near the pool.””
Marcus clenched his fists.
“And the chain?””
Claire shut her eyes.
“When I came to, I was already underwater. Someone had tied my ankle.””
Marcus sat back.
“Someone?””
Claire opened her eyes.
“I saw another person.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then she whispered, “A man.””
Marcus felt the room tilt.
“Did you see his face?””
“No. He was standing above me when I was struggling to get free.””
“Did you recognize him?””
Claire shook her head.
“But I heard him speak.””
“What did he say?””
Claire's fingers tightened around the blanket.
“He said, 'You were supposed to leave the little girl out of this.''”
Marcus stared at her.
“The little girl?””
“Ava.””
Silence filled the room.
Then Claire reached for his hand.
“Marcus, there's something else.””
He leaned closer.
“What?””
“Before Vanessa pushed me, she asked me where I had hidden the original document.””
“What document?””
“The one proving who really owns your company.””
Marcus froze.
“My company belongs to me.””
Claire shook her head.
“That's what you believe.””
She swallowed.
“Marcus, I found something in your office last week. I was looking for Ava's school records when I saw a folder in your desk.””
“What was in it?””
“A copy of a business registration.””
He frowned.
“Why would you have looked at that?””
“Because Vanessa's name was on it.””
Marcus stood.
“What?””
Claire continued.
“She isn't just an investor. She's listed as the controlling shareholder of your company.””
Marcus felt the air leave his lungs.
“That can't be right.””
“I took a photograph of the document.””
“Where is it?””
Claire looked toward her purse.
“They took my phone.””
“Who?””
“I don't know. But before I came here, I sent the photograph to someone I trust.””
“Who?””
Claire hesitated.
“Your father.””
Marcus went completely still.
His father, Richard Reed, had been dead for eleven months.
A massive heart attack, according to the official report.
Marcus slowly lowered himself into the chair.
“Claire, my father is dead.””
She stared at him.
“I know.””
“Then who did you send it to?””
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
“Your father's private email account.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That's impossible.””
“No,” Claire whispered.
“Because someone replied.””
She reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
The hospital had apparently returned a few belongings from her purse.
Marcus unfolded it.
There were only three lines.
*Claire,*
*If Vanessa has come after you, she knows I left the original in the place where Marcus first learned to walk.*
*Do not trust anyone in that house.*
Marcus read the message twice.
Then a third time.
He remembered the place immediately.
His father's old lakeside house.
The house where Marcus had spent his childhood.
The house that had supposedly been sold after Richard's death.
He looked at Claire.
“Who sent this?””
Claire shook her head.
“The account was signed R.R.””
Marcus stared at the initials.
Then his phone rang.
An unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice came through.
“Mr. Reed?””
“Who is this?””
“You need to listen carefully. The woman you almost married knows that Claire survived.””
Marcus stood.
“Who are you?””
“My name is Detective Miller. I'm with the Charleston Police Department.””
Marcus looked toward the hospital door.
“What do you want?””
The detective lowered his voice.
“We recovered something from the pool.””
Marcus's stomach tightened.
“What?””
“A waterproof recording device attached beneath the pool ladder.””
Marcus glanced at Claire.
“What was on it?””
A pause.
Then the detective spoke.
“Mr. Reed, we believe your bride was not acting alone.””
Marcus gripped the phone.
“Who was helping her?””
The detective took a breath.
“We identified the second person on the recording.””
“Who?””
“Someone who has been listed as deceased for nearly a year.””
Marcus's blood turned to ice.
The detective continued.
May you like
“Your father, Richard Reed.””
And then the call ended.
